Touching Base

loubielou31 · 26/01/2011 22:20

AIBU to poke out the eyes of the next person who tells me they'll touch base with me next week (or whenever) It is a ridiculous phase at all times but especially when said by another FTM in toddler group. What is wrong with "give you a call" or "pop round for coffee"? And quite honestly I don't want anyone touching my fucking base! Angry.

Got a leaflet through about a parents meeting asking us to attend and be briefed on methodology of teaching so we are ...

(and I hesitate to repeat this...)

...all singing off the same hymn sheet

AIBU to put a note on the reply to please NEVER use that awful phrase again!

Don't get me started on thinking outside the box Angry

prettymuchapixiegirl · 27/01/2011 09:32

I totally agree, it's a very annoying term. One that I find annoying is Keeping someone in the loop

In fact any of those type of sentences that just skirt around things annoy me really

kreecherlivesupstairs · 27/01/2011 09:57

You can play catch phrase bingo with them. DH and his colleagues do when they have a meeting.
They generally put a euro in each and whoever gets a full house wins.

MoonGirl1981 · 27/01/2011 09:58

My partner says 'I'll have to give you a raincheck' when someone asks him to do something.

It's the only thing I don't like about him.

lalabaloo · 27/01/2011 10:47

I hate that phrase so much! YANBU!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 27/01/2011 12:16

I can top that actually, my DD came home talking about 'squaring the circle'. I asked her what she meant and she said she didn't know but her teacher had been saying it all day.
I asked DH who works at the same school, he said it was on their buzzword bingo card and he imagined DDs teacher had been saying it in a pisstaking way to her friends and it had stuck in her head.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 27/01/2011 12:17

YANBU, I hate the phrase 'touch base' too!

Normantebbit · 27/01/2011 12:20

I know. They are really pushing the envelope with that one, maybe you could suggest a blue skies meeting to facilitate some face time.

I

Maria2007loveshersleep · 27/01/2011 12:24

what on earth is face time?! as opposed to...???

Tee2072 · 27/01/2011 12:27

I just had an email from a client requesting a chat. I wanted to ask him if we were meeting at a cafe for a cuppa as that's where I go to chat with my friends. But instead confirmed I'd be at his office on Monday for a meeting.

lightlyscrambled · 27/01/2011 12:32

Just to give you a heads up, I can't stand blue sky thinking either.

Ehh?? Nob off!

BettyCash · 27/01/2011 12:38

At least they're not reaching out to you. What am I, ET?

Maria2007loveshersleep · 27/01/2011 13:16

and what is 'blue sky thinking'? Am I completely behind the times? Hmm

MungBeans · 27/01/2011 13:35

YANBU! Grin
I know somebody who uses all the terms described above. I have to resist the urge to poke her with a big stick. She even says 'Sitch' as in situaton.

"What's the pick up sitch?"

and she starts every phonecall with..

"Just wanted to touch base and see how you're fixed"

Good job I love her! Grin

MungBeans · 27/01/2011 13:35

*situation. Durrrr

BrokenBananaTantrum · 27/01/2011 13:37

and what is a Rain check

do you go outside to see if it's raining?

why would that mean you can't do something?

thereistheball · 27/01/2011 13:42

But surely all your base are belong to us, OP?

archfiend · 27/01/2011 13:44

YANBU! Hate it.
'let's touch base to come up with a proactive way forward and create a holistic solution'. Gaaah!

doireallywant3 · 27/01/2011 13:54

at work we are always talking about 'engaging/engage with' someone. when did we stop just calling or talking to someone?!?! and as for 'reaching out' grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

wigglesrock · 27/01/2011 14:01

I hate it, its both me and Mr Wiggles personal nails on blackboard. Its really wanky, don't get me started.

DublinMammy · 27/01/2011 14:09

My favourite in my office days was describing something as mission critical. Ha ha ha - what a load of wank all these expression are!

mamsnet · 27/01/2011 14:21

Touch base! The first time I heard my sister use this on the phone I thought she must at least be speaking to an American friend..

She was talking to my (also Irish) cousin and they'd seen each other the previous day.

And what's blue sky thinking?

Sidge · 27/01/2011 14:46

I don't mind heads up, we used to use it in the military but most of those others are just pretentious claptrap.

I really can't bear some of the ones I hear for work

overarching policy
joined up thinking
clinical governance
mission statements

I bet someone gets paid a ton by the NHS to dream up wanky ways of saying something in a new way that we've used a perfectly good phrase for, for years.
