AIBU to be surprised and upset?
In Morrisons this evening I treated myself to egg and chips and sauasages- it had been a b of a day. They have a deal where kids eat free for one adult price meal that is being bought. I don't have kids so was in there on my own. Standing just behind me in the quque was a lady and her (around) 8 year old daughter. Daughter said to Mum 'I'm hungry- can I please have some lasagne?'

Mum said 'No- I haven't got the money on me and anyway- I want to buy myself a cake. You can have some coke though'. I turned and said 'If you would like, I would be happy to order your daughter lasagne as I am buying a full price adult meal and might as well use the kids meal up too- I can't eat both!' (I said it to her very quietly while her daughter had run off to choose a coke)

She looked me up and down and then said 'Fxxx off you stuck up bitch!'
I said 'I take that as a no then' but I was really upset. Was I out of line unknowingly?
Is there some Mum etiquette I don't know about?

Oh wow what a lovely thing to do!she's obviously got serious manners problems.
Don't stop being a kind person though because of one idiot, really sorry you had a shitty day x

I'm with HeCate on page 1. I wouldn't dream of treating myself to a cake or anything else if I didn't have enough for the Dc's to eat at least the same as me.
Bloody rude woman. Ignore it OP, she's not worth being upset over. Just plain ignorant IMO.

So this mum is eating cake whilst her dd goes hungry - shocking. It's so nice that you offered to give her the free meal that goes with your adult one. How horrid she was to reply as she did. Some people are just awful.

YANBU - she sounds vile.

Recently my ds was choosing a magazine, he was agonising over whether to choose a Cbeebies or a Thomas - a lady was watching and offered to buy him the other one. I did say no because I thought it was too indulgent but thought it was v kind of her - would never have thought she was doing it out of charity, just thought she was, like you, a genuine, kind person!

what a mean lady

Firawla · 24/01/2011 22:08

op it was a very kind gesture, the lady was just rude!! yanbu to be upset by this, i think 99% of people would have accepted that and been touched that you thought to offer tbh. as for eating a cake and sandwich while dd goes hungry, thats out of order.

I don't get this about not talking to strangers in queues Hmm

Recently I was in Caffe Nero and a girl behind me was saying to her DP, 'Oooh, ask if they'll lend you some scissors, I need to wrap so-and-so's gift' and he blatantly was embarrassed to...

So when we ended up sitting next to each other, I took my nail scissors out of my bag and said, 'Scuse me, can you use these?'

Is this rude? Terrible? ... Or, er, just normal friendliness? I thought it was my good deed for the day!

I read "Random Acts of Kindness" once. One suggestion was to give a lolly to a bus driver, which I did. Made me feel ever so good

Next time you go into the doctors and check in for your appointment, when she asks for your name say "I understand I'm Stuck Up Bitch". I don't think you were out of order at all, you were being friendly and you even knew her by sight for goodness sake.

Oooh! I like it Myleetlepony Grin
