Only popped in because it's DS's birthday next week and someone told me they sell big bags of balloons in there.

Get a pack, and approach the till area with DD (who is 7). On the till end, in clear view to everyone queing, is a display of Condoms and pink vibrating 'love-rings' - cock rings I suppose they would be better known as.

The pinkness of the boxes they are in and the word 'ring' catches DDs attention and she wants to know what they are for. There was definite sniggering from the couple behind us as I struggled to find the right words. I told her they were for grown ups to wear, which wasn't a lie, but she kept pressing me on it and I had to tell her to be quiet in the end.

DD is totally clueless about sex, but even if she weren't, I still don't think I'd like to have to explain what they are for.

I am no prude - but am I right to be angry about the fact that Poundland display them in such a prominent position, exactly where the sweets would normally be? It's wrong on so many levels IMO. I will be writing to them tomorrow.

Ah Tee, I get you now :)

KatieMiddleton · 23/01/2011 16:36

I've seen a child about 10yo in Ann Summers. He wanted the couple with him - grandparents I think - to buy him a bondage teddy Shock

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2011 16:37

no jeezy, a packet of condoms discretely by the till is fine, noone (certainly not me) is suggesting that safe sex shouldnt be taught. however, a cock ring with a bright pink box amonst the sweets is not. sex toys should not be displayed at childrens eye level.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2011 16:37

katie, urgh!

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 16:38

Have't decided on my thoughts about teh cock rings tbh, but condoms I have no problems with w2hatsoever and both my odler boys knew vaguely what they were by about 7.

There's a ridiculously wide gap between aid used to prevent unwanted pregnancy and disease and mysogynistic literature portraying women as sexual object: personally for a start I quite like sex, in an equal relationship with someone I love, and it's pretty liberating in fact.

moondog · 23/01/2011 16:38

discreet not discrete which means separate.
Althoguh on refection, the general consensus appears to be that the product in question should be presented discreetly or if possible discretely.

Hmmm...

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 23/01/2011 16:38

couldn't she read it herself

pigletmania · 23/01/2011 16:39

Snigger snigger Grin Grin. It is the wrong place to have those things though, a little higher would be better.

Tee2072 · 23/01/2011 16:40

Where does the OP say there were sweets around them? I mean, I know Poundland often has sweets at the till, but nowhere does the OP mention this, so perhaps this was a separate display from the sweets?

Our Poundland (we actually have 3 within 3 streets of each other Hmm) has sweets in basket display things and then batteries and things actually hanging at the till.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2011 16:41

moondog Blush

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2011 16:42

ok, at the till end. where the majority of shops keep their sweets. does that make it better?

moondog · 23/01/2011 16:49

Yes,now accept the ticking off and do not repeat or you will be dragged away and beaten. Wink

I was forced at gunpoint had reason to go in Peacocks the other day to get something for SIL and they have what I can only term Outfits with a capital and very loaded 'O'. Frilly things which apparently people associate with French Maids.

DD obviously saw the pink, frilly, fur trimmed nastiness and ran at it at full pelt. In that charming way 3yr olds have, she started up a running commentary that lasted what felt like 17 hours that went something like 'what is THAT, is that grown up clothing mama, why has it got muppet fur on it, who wears things like that mama, it's very small, it's not very warm, I like the spots on it, would Grandma wear one, can you wear it for swimming' and on and on.

Nowt to do with cock rings and condoms I know, but I'm sure dd's witterings brightened up the staff's day. And I found the polyester nastiness more offensive tbh.

moondog · 23/01/2011 16:55

Aahh.....

moondog · 23/01/2011 16:56

OOh, I quite like Peacocks....
You can pick up the odd little frippery.

"I felt physically sick wondering what I could tell her."

FGS get a grip.

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2011 17:00

The music was very loud and they had a lot of lingerie that seemed to belong in a 'wtf have you come as?' range.

I don't like shops really though. Unless they sell gingerbread.

Mumcentreplus · 23/01/2011 17:02

Peacocks can be alright...for strange pants on sale...

TheSkiingGardener · 23/01/2011 17:17

Given that the electric Christmas decorations I got from poundland flashed randomly and then shorted out, what sensible man would seriously use a Poundland cockring? Way too risky!

StrawberryTot · 23/01/2011 17:18

HAHAHA!!! awww bless op, you should chill a little and not take these moments to seriously as at some point in the future you may look back and laugh at it. I personnally absolutely love these moments these are one of many reasons why i love being a parent, and its a good job i do as my dear daughter is rather fantastic at them from telling the postman the colour of my pubic hair to shouting across the shop what size sanitary towels i need Shock and many more inbetween.

cumbria81 · 23/01/2011 17:19

I think by 7 it's hightime your child knew about sex. Cockrings, admittedly, not so necessary but it's nothting to be ashamed of.

Tee2072 · 23/01/2011 17:21

Literally LOL TheSkiingGardener.

MrsFruitcake · 23/01/2011 17:21

It doesn't actually say what it is on the box Trinity, so no, she couldn't read it.

I'm not being precious, I just don't think it's the right place to display sex toys.
