WTF

What a waste of money

OP posts:

OK, wasn't sure if to continue this let me say I think it is great people speak Welsh and I do not want to get place names changed.

At the risk of coming across as aggressive

JemimaMop why not have the course in English then there would be no need for translation facilities.

Of course if 100% of people could understand Welsh on the course then fine have it in Welsh.

What is the problem in that?

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 Of course they should not give up there language, no one is suggesting that. If things come printed in triplicate in Switzerland does that mean it is not a waste of resources? However I can not comment on the Swiss situation as I do not know enough about it.

Been to Switzerland and never seen triplicate or duplicate sighs.

OFGS I wish people would stop making me click on links to the Daily Fail. I feel dirty now and have to go and optrex my eyes.

OP - please post a warning in future!

Yes, it was a joke - if you read the rest of the post you will see that it is actually taking Okaren's argument to it's logical conclusion and suggesting that (s)he would probably not like that quite so much. I really don't understand why other countries pander to Englsih speakers quite as much as they do. Admittedly, sometimes it is because the economy is dependent on Anglophone tourism; and sometimes it is for safety's sake (e.g. road signs saying "drive on the right" in Calais). But even in Taiwan, a lot of the signage is in English. Why, FFS? English and Chinese are very different languages. Why do we blithely assume that it is easier for them to learn English than for us to learn Chinese? Or, if it's a business thing, they also export shedloads of stuff to mainland Europe - why not signs in French or German? It's about time English speakers took responsibility for themselves abroad instead of expecting the rest of the world to wet-nurse them.

JemimaMop · 26/01/2011 13:40

It would been a bit silly to have held the course in English as it was a course relating to education, and the settings that we work in are Welsh medium!

JemimaMop · 26/01/2011 13:41

(Loving the Aderyn song BTW... "Paid a mynd i ffwrdd, paid a fflio ffwrdd...")

notrightnow · 26/01/2011 18:23

Sorry MIFLAW - I read too quickly and feel very thick now. Glad we are on the same side!

Living in London and full of hiraeth thanks to the song!

Ha ha I am sure the Swiss think I am mad, when I drive through the tunnels singing "yma o hyd" At the top of my voice to try and get an echo in the tunnel.

Grin

Actually we are the only country close to being able to pronounce some Swiss German words properly because of "ch"!
