Ear piecing

helenoh · 22/01/2011 08:34

I asked my 16 year old daughter, who has wanted pierced ears for ever, to wait until her GCSEs were over when I would pay for them. I am an ex teacher and I have seen ear rings torn out in the corridor rush. My sister in law has offered her ears and belly piercings for her birthday without consulting me or my husband. Am I right to be angry?

Your sister in law is being VERY unreasonable, and downright interfering.
Has she got teenagers? If so, I think I would be offering them a tattoo for their next Birthday!!!

ThePerfectFather · 22/01/2011 09:28

Your sister in law has not just crossed the line, she's taken a dump on it and stuck a tiny flag in the poop. Try to take the high road and tell her politely that she can't offer that kind of thing but if she persists, it's time for Operation : Takedown.

Mumcentreplus · 22/01/2011 09:34

@ Operation : Takedown

Shock

crossed the line? she cant even see the line!!!

Defo have words with her, cheeky cowbag!

YANBU btw

tinkertitonk · 22/01/2011 10:44

DDs American granny took her off at 12 to have her ears pierced without consulting anyone. Her main aim was to piss off the Scottish granny. Which she achieved.

Different people, different views. It's not as if SIL is offering drugs here.

Ooopsadaisy · 22/01/2011 10:49

YANBU.

I understand completely but I think you are lucky to have got away with this.

I'm surprised she hasn't gone out and just got them done or pierced them herself.

TrillianAstra · 22/01/2011 10:52

Torn out in the corridor rush? Hmm

SIL is BU to take your DD to get pierced without your permission, but I think YAB a bit U to make your daughter wait not just until she is 16 but until after GCSEs.

bubblewrapped · 22/01/2011 11:05

I think yabu.. she is 16!!!!

At that age I would have just gone out and got mine done myself.

mutznutz · 22/01/2011 11:07

Your SIL is way out of order...but I have to say your 'corridoor rush' reasoning is rather strange too.

sue52 · 22/01/2011 11:11

YANBU. I allowed my daughter to have her ears pierced at 14 but I would never consent to navel rings.

16???!?!???!?!??

Get a grip.

FabbyChic · 22/01/2011 11:14

Earrings being pulled out in the hall rush, where did you get those facts from?

What are the statistics, never heard of it happen at all ever.

bubblewrapped · 22/01/2011 11:30

She is 16 and legally can sleep with anyone she wants... a belly button ring should be the least of your worries.

I foresee a daughter who will be rebelling big time pretty soon if you are treating her like a little child.

From Google....

In England and Wales there is no statutory age limit for cosmetic piercing. However, some local councils have used licensing powers to impose licence conditions relating to the age of the client

If her earring gets ripped out it could happen anywhere surely? I mean it's a small risk to take considering how many thousands of people who have piercings?

bubblewrapped · 22/01/2011 11:44

I can understand it happening at a gig but not in a school corridor! And really cant see how it would happen with plain studs.

How will she cope in the rush hour when she is going to work?

GreenAmy · 22/01/2011 11:46

Think your sister is a bit out of line although she probably did not think

I do not know what the big thing around piercing is, although I am not a fan of facial piercings

Neither I or my DDs have their ears pierced, I have a navel rings, well it is a figure of cupid actually.

MY DD1 who is 11 wants her navel pierced and I know a lot of you will now be filled with horror, not sure what the big deal is if I were to let her do it. Which I won't, yet.

Seen earnings being pulled out in a night club a couple of times, but they were huge dangly

mutznutz · 22/01/2011 11:48

They can get ripped out just taking your jumper off...it just makes you learn to be more careful.

Porcelain · 22/01/2011 11:55

YANBU, she should have asked you, your daughter is still a minor and your responsibility.

Also, regarding the age limit for naval piercing, although there is no limit, the decent piercers I trust with my body (hospital grade autoclaves, know what they are doing etc - I've had over 20 piercings in my time Wink) will not touch under-18s, they don't need the custom, it's not worth their while, which makes me wonder about the quality of those that will do under-18s, there are probably some decent ones, but I'l bet your daughter doesn't know how to spot them.

Re the ears though, I would let her get them done, but that's between you and your daughter, not your sister.

bubblewrapped · 22/01/2011 11:59

I wouldnt let my child have her navel pierced. Seen too many go manky, my own included, as it is in a place that catches on clothes and the belly button is one of the most germfilled places on the body, so it takes a lot more care to heal than earlobes do, and also more likely to cause problems when doing sports etc.

I am not a fan of facial piercing either but again, having seen my stepdaughter have an eyebrow bar in (at 17), only for it to grow out (as most piercings do due to the body trying to reject the foreign object), she is now left with a scar on her eyebrow at the age of 22.

However piercings are a lot less permanent than tattoos, and you can take a piercing out.. getting rid of a tattoo is much harder, and I shudder when I see so many young girls with stupid tattoos on their hands and feet, and hear them planning what they are going to get done next. Cher LLoyd from the X factor being the most current idiot that thinks having quotes inked all over her arms looks great. It really doesnt.

GreenAmy · 22/01/2011 12:32

I agree bubblewrapped, people who get tattooed should have their brain examined

Some tattooists are very skilful and admire their work but it shouldn't be on skin

mutznutz · 22/01/2011 12:38

I agree too. I used to think my 80's hair-do and shoulder pads were the bees knees back in the 80's...but looking back on the photos, I'd be horrified if I had to look the same way now in 2011 Blush
