It's called Love you forever by Robert Munsch and it's a Canadian classic.
It's a great book. I can't read it without falling apart and crying like a baby.
Should I hide it? Give it away? Just leave it on the shelf until ds can read it for himself... I think that might actually be worse - listening to him read it I may end up face down in a tissue box surrounded by biscuits and choccy wrappers.

Oh you people. I read Peepo to my son earlier and couldn't get through the last two pages!

elinorbellowed · 23/01/2011 09:14

Anyone else read The Cow Who Laid an Egg? Read it when pregnant and now can't read the end without howling. And it's supposed to be funny! My mother refuses to read Owl Babies to.her grandchildren. Says it's too sad. Sometimes well up during Where the Wild Things Are.

Mayqueene · 23/01/2011 10:53

Granpa-John Burningham-with the images of granpa as a baby, his empty chair at the end.

I think it's beautiful, but it makes me howl!!

TurkeyBurgerThing · 23/01/2011 11:05

My eyes are just like puffy slits reading this thread. I've not read Goodbye Mog or Love You Forever.

What the hell is wrong with me?????

Boohooyou · 23/01/2011 18:45

I've just got The Heart and the Bottle by Oliver Jeffries.

I think it's a
American, it's about a little girl who's grandad dies so she decides to put her heart in a bottle. The pictures are beautiful.

I cannot get through the whole book.

So if you like books that make you cry this is a good one.
I can't do links
I'm def going to get Love you Forever.

Boohooyou · 23/01/2011 18:54

Right ordering The Lorax and Love You Forever on Amazon
anything else I should add to my basket ?

Mists · 23/01/2011 19:03

I howl at "Love You Forever" but hadn't heard of, "On the Night You Were Born" before now.

Just ordered it after reading the reviews through my tears.

Boohooyou · 23/01/2011 19:21

Mists · 23/01/2011 19:27

Just read up-thread and giggling at the idea of a book for children called "Dogger" Grin

PigeonPair · 23/01/2011 19:29

Oh My God - have just looked this book up on line and read the story - I am in floods! It is the bit where she is old and frail and he then rocks her!

Blatherskite · 23/01/2011 19:30

Oliver Jeffers is Irish Boohoo. He lives in America now though. I've met him, he's lovely. We've got the Heart and the Bottle but it's never made me cry. I sob at most of the others so I can't be that heartless!!

Here's a linky though to make up :)

Boohooyou · 23/01/2011 19:34

But Blatherskite when she goes back to the empty chair and she sits in the dark !!
How can you not cry, you must, I insist ! Grin

Thanks for the link
I got it for £3 ish from the Book People.

ps Can't believe you don't cry

ToxicKitten · 23/01/2011 19:37

Okay, having to suck in tears here as am a mother of teenage son who has just come in with his best friend also aged 16. I also have two teenage step-daughters, and this song does it for me every time as they are hurtling towards adulthood. Thank you Abba Hmm

Slipping through my Fingers

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that Im losing her forever
And without really entering her world
Im glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see whats in her mind
Each time I think Im close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when shes gone theres that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I cant deny
[. From: www.elyrics.net/read/a/abba-lyrics/slipping-through-my-fingers-lyrics.html .]
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
(slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did but most we didnt
And why I just dont know

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see whats in her mind
Each time I think Im close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers...

Slipping through my fingers all the time

Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile...

Blatherskite · 23/01/2011 20:18

Nope Boohooyou. I read it a couple of nights ago just to check. My Grandad is currently dying too so you'd think I'd be in floods but nothing.

Tried baby Brains tonight. Again - nothing.

Guess How Much I love you had be choked the night before though...

Iwantscallops · 23/01/2011 20:25

I can't get through The Snail and the Whale without breaking down! Better not read that one!

tummytickler · 24/01/2011 09:42

Toxickitte - my eldest dd is 10 soon and those lyrics make me Sad .

Has anyone read a book called Amos and Boris? It makes me weep! I bought it for ds because he is called Amos and thought it would be nice for him to have a book with a character of the same name. Its about a mouse (Amos) who builds a boat, it sinks and he is rescued by a whale. They become great friends, but never know if they will ever see each other again as one needs to live on the land and the other the sea.
really beautiful book - Highly recommend it (even though I have made it sound rubbish Grin )
