AIBU to think what is going on where the vulnerable, poor weak ,old and sick are getting picked on the government?

I have been following posts about Riven's plight and others and I shake my head in dispair.

I always believed you can judge a society on how it treats it's vulnerable and I'm afraid our society isn't that great at the moment.

Guess I'm feeling a bit down because I know that the Riven's case isn't unique. In the past when I worked with Social Services I have worked with older people, children with learning disablities, and also adults with learning disablities and their carers.

I left a few years ago but I have watched day centres where famlies could get a couple of hours respite shut down.

In an office where I worked there was a person who had to go out and look at how he could cut services from people. To make things worse it was like something to celebrate when he got services taken away from people.

You know when you see bankers on tv cheering when they make a deal and there is a lot of high fives going on, well this is what it was like. It was distressing to see. The bloke was about 23 years old at the time, perfect health and not a care in the world apart from girlfriend trouble. Glad I left.

Just a ramble but I'm a bit pissed off!

YANBU but you shouldn't be surprised thats a conservative government for you.

earwicga · 20/01/2011 16:02

YANBU

The tories are worse for it, but Labour did the same thing too.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 20/01/2011 16:02

Yep one "class" of society fuck up and the vulnerable pay for it. No surprises there esp not with a conservative govt in power.

tiredemma · 20/01/2011 16:05

Tory Govt.

Famous for shitting on the most vulnerable in society from a great height.

upahill · 20/01/2011 16:05

I'm not surprised tangled but I'm very sad.

I don't like the postcode lottery either. My nan and grandad live in a few hundred miles from me and they get loads of help and support. i know how much income they are on and what their background is.
I used to do assessments for people who had same or worse conditions than grandparents and less money. I would recommend services that I thought they needed to improve their quality of life and health but not many got appoved.

Shameful!

So Riven invited david cameron into her home and actually believed he would help her? That is pretty silly in itself. Are people so very ignorant about conservative policy? Conservative policy is all about looking after yourself, promoting business, closing down a welfare state and rewarding people who already have with more. Not enabling vulnerable or needy elements of society as the unsaid idea is that this is social darwinism and survival of the fittest.

Did Riven or any tory voter really think the blue cold tories would help? Of course not. They've been that way for hundreds of years.

This country turned its back on the welfare system because of chavs with big tellys but did not stop to consider the long term needs of vulnerable disabled children and adults.

I'm not jumping on the MN bandwagon complaining about a scorpion being a scorpion when everyone had a chance to keep the tories out and now we have to deal with it because some idiots think David Cameron is sexy and trustworthy. Lord help us all.

earwicga · 20/01/2011 16:12

Don't turn this into an anti-Tory rant! I hate them as much as the next person, but it is the policy of ALL mainstream parties to shit on the vulnerable.

Yup thats the tories for you, keep the rich rich and keep the weak/vunerable/poor in poverty

They also dont want us to be educated, scrapping EMA so the poor cannot afford to further educated themselves

pascoe28 · 20/01/2011 16:17

Ah, bless - please do not mistake a willingness to spend other people's money on your own pet cause for compassion.

Donate to charity, volunteer, spend time with the sick and vulnerable, become a Samaritan.

But please, do not think that arguing for and increase in other people's taxes is in any way akin to acting out of altruism or humanity.

Oh and let's not blame the Tories completely - Labour put us where we are (as they always do) but lacked the moral fibre to explain how they would get out us out of this situation.

deardot · 20/01/2011 16:18

there are more parties out there than labour and tories. Its not a case of if I don't agree with one then I must support the others. The green party are pretty good these days...

upahill · 20/01/2011 16:19

God I didn't want this to turn into an anti government thread!!

Iwas just jotting down thoughts that came into my head and not putting blame at anyones door. It is more complex than saying it is labour fault - no it's the tories fault and so on!

VinegarTits · 20/01/2011 16:19

Labour were not 'just as bad' or the tories wouldnt have anything to scrap and would have to start cutting costs for the rich

There has been no help for us fir the last 10 years at least. The people who make this about the current government annoy me a bit tbh and I have voted labour all my life.
Most of us have been dealing with it for years and it was no better before. Tony Blair and Gordon brown did fuck all for carers ,in fact the cast gov brought in a compulsory interview I was supposed to attend so that I could be offered work to fit around my caring duties

That was a short conversation.

A woman threw herself off a bridge with her disabled son thevweek I got that letter. A woman burned herself and her daughter to death after years of torment from neighbourhood yobs. And Frankie boil is fucking hilarious with his retard jokes.

I agree with you op. Wevtreat the vulnerable badly. Have done fir years though

katiestar · 20/01/2011 16:27

Pascoe -Um how did the labour party cause the credit crunch which is worldwide?

Hullygully · 20/01/2011 16:27

And agrees.

GooseFatRoasties · 20/01/2011 16:28

YANBU.

purepurple · 20/01/2011 16:31

This is just the beginning.
This is the difference between the tories (business and money) and labour (people and society)

I think beside the cuts there is a terrible attitude in some parts of society - an 'I'm alright Jack' attitude.
Like I said in my opening post it was almost a badge of honour to get peoples' services cut.

I understand at times some cuts maybe needed or reviews may have to take place but I believe it should be handled with sensitivity.

KalokiMallow · 20/01/2011 17:23

I think, as was mentioned in another thread, a lot of the reason the vulnerable are so ignored is because people would rather not think about how vulnerable they could become.

It's easier for them to look the other way and/or imagine that people are vulnerable through choice/fault of their own, it means they don't have to face the chance it could happen to them.

Though there are obviously those who resent helping others through things such as taxes. Thinking that the disabled have enough help, rather than too little. And are jealous of things like mobility vehicles. Forgetting that most people would rather have their health instead.

awubble · 20/01/2011 17:28

OMG the government they are such wankers taking things from poor disabled kids innit !

Well, i found out that the government actually already spend more than they earn. It probably all goes on bankers bonuses and expenses innit !

I reckon they are gonna have to increase income tax to a basic rate of 40% and a higher rate of 80% so we can give a bit more to people who need it, like Riven and also pensioners and single mums and the homeless and immigrants and kids with ADHD or a Learning Disability

What do we want ! 40% basic rate of tax !

When do we want it ?
