is it unreasonable to expect someone who responds to a message "I do not believe you" to give a reason?

OP posts:
SecretNutellaFix · 20/01/2011 12:47

a bit, because they have just stated their opinion.

AgentZigzag · 20/01/2011 12:47

You'd expect so.

What's the context?

Does it matter if they don't believe you? If there's no consequences to it then just shrug and move on. Who cares?

If it matters (e.g. a manager doesn't believe that you were ill when absent from work) then yes, you're not unreasonable to expect them to justify what they're saying.

LoopyLoopsIsNoLongerFestive · 20/01/2011 13:39

Surely depends.

EricNorthmansMistress · 20/01/2011 13:39

If it's in response to a MN post, shrug and move on. If it's the police officer arresting you for burglary then it's kind of important...

AgentZigzag · 20/01/2011 13:42

That made me LOL eric Grin

Only kind of important?

AgentZigzag · 20/01/2011 13:44

Are you there OP?

Or are you testing a hypothesis that states 'A significant bunfight will ensue on MN if an OP just states one opinion with no details'?

GabbyLoggon · 20/01/2011 14:11

I dont think posters should write a bald phrase like "I do not beleive you"

Be reasonable and say things like "my experience is rather different to yours."

it works better cheers "Gabby"

TattyDevine · 20/01/2011 14:22

Gabby they should put you in a laboratory and study you...

GabbyLoggon · 20/01/2011 14:34

TattyDevine

we are all being studied on Mumsnet that is the nature of message boards.

But studied at a safe distance because we are all sort of anonymous. cheers "Gabby"

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 20/01/2011 14:36

AgentZigzag · 20/01/2011 14:37

Shock Well they can fuck right off studying me.

I don't do scrutiny Smile

giyadas · 20/01/2011 14:38

Gabby's really starting to grow on me.
Gentle sentiments, bizarrely expressed. What's not to love?
Have you considered starting a cult Gabby? I'd join.

Hullygully · 20/01/2011 14:40

Does the reason matter?

Doesn't the message, "I do not believe you" say all there is to be said? If you want a reason, it will surely be that they believe that your pants are on fire.

AgentZigzag · 20/01/2011 14:41

I'm already a member giyadas

GabbyLoggon · 20/01/2011 14:47

giyadas you have already joined, Is it Baroness Thatchers cult?

agent...nothing to fear. Only Mumsnet know who you are. Unless you think your email has been breeched.?

giyadas · 20/01/2011 14:50

I'll switch to yours Gabby, I'll bet your kool-aid is far less suspect.

GabbyLoggon · 20/01/2011 14:55

Does it matter if we call people "Liars"
Hully.?

well, if you do it in a pub you get your head thumped in

If Hully called person a liar who was telling the truth then Hully would be the liar.

It aint rocket science.

Now should we return to the original question?

Chil1234 · 20/01/2011 15:03

YABU... If you've made a single factual statement 'I don't believe you' is a fair reaction. If you've put forward a list the person who doesn't believe you would have to be a little more specific about which ones they don't believe.

You wouldn't expect extra explanation if the response was 'I believe you'

JamieLeeCurtis · 20/01/2011 15:08

I don't believe any of you. You are all figments of my imagination

GabbyLoggon · 20/01/2011 16:00

chil1234
Well, you are doing logic. But I would say "I dont believe you" would be taken as "You are a liar." in certain circumstances

Why not try....Its not the way I see it....or if you are really up for it: "Would you like to step outside and take your coat off?"

JamieLee Curtis...good comment, because imagination does play a big part in reality.
Do you have your dads famous hairstyle?

DameShirleyKnot · 20/01/2011 16:02

I do not believe you because I think you are lying
