to feel threatened by ALL dog owners...

StartingAfresh · 19/01/2011 09:22

because you can't tell until the damage has been done, which ones are good (And yes, I do know many of them are very responsible)

However, even 'some' good dog owners with friendly dogs with exceptional behaviour could kill my nephew.

He has an allergy to dogs which is potentially fatal. He has been hospitalised a couple of time due to his reaction (inability to breath).

Why can't ALL dog owners, even the good ones keep their dogs away from other people as a default?

Er if your nephew lives 300 miles away why do you feel threatened by dog owners? Confused

It seems to me like soneone just fancied a bit of a bunfight because they were bored, no?

Btw my dog is not in the habit of drooling on people when they walk past him in the street. I have yet to meet a dog who has drooled on me when I walked past and I live with dd2 aka the worlds biggest dog lover. We know the names of almost every dog in town. She is often threatened with a leash herself as she is willing to run half a mile in the opposite direction if she spots one of her 'friends'. Still never been drooled on though.

Ephiny · 19/01/2011 15:11

YABU. Fine to say that people should teach their dogs manners and not let them just run up to strangers/jump up at people, I don't think anyone here has disagreed with that. It seems a huge leap to go from that to saying you feel 'threatened by all dog owners' though, that is unreasonable.

What do you imagine the owners are going to do to you anyway?

doggytreats · 19/01/2011 15:11

I understand your concern for your nephew but to feel threatened by all dog owners is a tad unfair. I'm getting rather fed up of apologising for having dogs. I have got to the point where my stomach knots up if I see someone in the distance and I DO have well-behaved dogs.

HowAnnoying · 19/01/2011 15:15

you thought about getting a dog, but your DN has a dog allergy that could kill him?

Vallhala · 19/01/2011 15:20

I think, doggytreats, that you are far from alone there. Our record as a nation on dog care and respect for dog welfare as a country is appalling overall and it is being fuelled by an increasingly hysterical, litigious minority and an ignorant, headline-seeking press. I too tense up now when I see a human in the distance (generally UNLESS they have a dog with them) as I have had far too many experiences where I and/or my well-behaved, well-controlled dogs have been screamed at, sworn at, kicked, told we have no right to be in a public area, threatenened with violence, told to go the other way/go back because Tarquin doesn't like dogs, told they must be aggressive and are "dangerous dogs" (two of my dogs are GSD), told to put them on a fucking lead (whilst they were at heel in a place where they were entitled to be off-leash) and soforth.

Frankly I'm sick of these people.

Deciduousblonde · 19/01/2011 15:22

Yes Howannoying, but apparently the OPs nephew lives 300 miles away so it isn't too much of a concern.

And there was me thinking the thread was all about a nephew who spent a lot of time with the OP, so she was concerned about his allergy.

Obviusly not. Oh well, I'm off to do something a little less boring instead Grin

MrSpoc · 19/01/2011 15:27

So can you tell me what the poin of your thread was? I am now well and truly lost.

MillyR · 19/01/2011 15:28

Startingafresh, people who are allergic to dog saliva are also allergic to dog dander and urine; it is a specific protein present in all three. It is often carried on the fur because animals have dander flakes on their fur and they lick themselves.

This protein based allergen covers the clothes and soft furnishings of dog owners and triggers reactions in other people when they are indoor and the air flow is more limited.

It is important for people who are not allergic to understand this. If your nephew is so allergic that he ends up hospitalised as a consequence of coming into contact outdoors, then he would also be having problems at school, and if you got a dog he would be at risk from the allergens you were carrying when you went to visit him.

This is not defensive. It is really important that people are aware of how they could be bringing others into contact with allergens.

Because of DS having a friend who is allergic to dogs, I have to store my son's outdoor coat for school 9which he has to take into classrooms) in his bedroom (it is an attic and the dogs can't get upstairs) so that his clothes carry less allergens. I had to get medical help after 1 day at my parents because a cat had spent 2 days in their house 3 months earlier. Allergen removal after a pet has lived in a house takes 2 years, unless you remove all soft furnishings, carpets etc.

You started a thread with a post about allergies and how they can kill, but you don't seem to want people to discuss this issue.

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 15:34

YY MillyR is right regarding saliva. And the triggering factors with regards to clothing etc.

YABVVU therefore and possibly need to get out more.

babycuckoo · 19/01/2011 15:40

Startingafresh, naturally I am sorry to hear of your nephews allergy, obviusly horrible. However, I am also slightly fed up with dog bashing, most owners and their dogs I see out are very responsible, their dogs comes when called they dont jump on every passerby and are on leads when not in a park (ones that dogs are allowed) or any other open space. I do see, a lot, adults and children going up to dogs stroking, patting etc... Most owners have hold of their dogs at that time.

Yes you do see irresponsible owners (just as we see irresponsible parents, teenagers, etc etc) but I doubt very much they will be on MN! Unfortunately irresponsible people are everywhere, but after everythings been said I`m really confused as too what this thread is actually about?

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 15:48

OP's DN has a bad dog allergy. A potentially fatal dog allergy. Not asthma. Not hair or skin. Saliva only.

OP is coming across as a bit of a dog hater
OP also has a DS who has ADS. OP's ADS DS is scared of dogs. OP is considering getting dog (to cure ADS DS of phobia?). Oddly, this will not affect OP's DN with the fatal dog allergy.

Hmm I think that may be it.

DooinMeCleanin · 19/01/2011 15:54

SSB you forgot
Op wants all dogs leashed at all times
Op does not want all dogs leashed at all times
Op wants all dogs on a tight leash
Op wants all dogs leashed and muzzled
Op wants no dogs to be leashed and muzzled
The nephew who she feels threatened on behalf of lives over 300 miles away.

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 16:01

Oh yes I did :(

Silly me. I also forgot:

I hate dogs these days. When I was growing up, we had a lovely family dog who was a jack russell/corgi cross, strange looking and had the kindly nature of a corgi. Very soft and loved kids.

However now, people don't want family dogs, they want guard dogs. Ugly beasts, tend to be staffs, rotties, etc. Dogs that would have my 2yr olds face off given half the chance.

My BF was going to buy a dog, invited me to the local RSPCA to see what was going. Again, all abandoned ugly, nasty looking dogs, not what she was after. She finally ended up with a King Charles puppy, very cute.

I give dogs a wide berth when out with my DD, would even cross the road to get avoid them. Don't see why people think they should have so many rights, unneccessary sh*t machines IMO.

OTheHugeManatee · 19/01/2011 16:06

I feel threatened by this dog:

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 16:07

Dogs aren't nasty just because they are abandoned, ugly or nasty looking. Small dogs can be v v snappy compared to big dogs. You can't and shouldn't judge by looks. And there are very few 'bad' dogs, sadly there are plenty of 'bad' owners.

DooinMeCleanin · 19/01/2011 16:07

Rev Staffs are not guard dogs, they are widely known as the Nanny dog becasue of their natural affinity to children.

The UK KC reccomend only two breeds to be housed around children, one of those being the SBT.

If you truely believe what you have written above I suggest you do some research outside the realms of the Daily Mail et al.

And despite popular belief no breed of dog finds two year old's faces appetising. They much prefer kibble, thank goodness Smile

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 16:07

That's one scary looking MoFo there Manatee Grin

Deciduousblonde · 19/01/2011 16:11

I would be scared by any dog carried around in a handbag Grin

The comment ''I don't see why people think they shouls have so many rights'' actually made me chortle somewhat.

Don't people actually stop to consider what it is they are saying??

Deciduousblonde · 19/01/2011 16:11

should

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 16:15

Did anyone get BeerTricks in from the field? Hmm

Ephiny · 19/01/2011 16:16

"However now, people don't want family dogs, they want guard dogs. Ugly beasts, tend to be staffs, rotties, etc. Dogs that would have my 2yr olds face off given half the chance. "

Are you serious? I have a Rottie, he's the most gentle, calm, good-natured 'family dog' you can imagine, he loves our little niece and nephew and is very good with them. He's not a guard dog (will sometimes bark if there's someone outside the door, but most breeds do that!),and not remotely nasty or ugly, I think he's gorgeous and people often comment on what a sweet face he has.

And Staffies are lovely dogs and well known for being good with young children, there are countless numbers of the poor things in rescue or being killed through no fault of their own at all, not least because of attitudes like yours.

I don't know if you really mean your comments or are just trolling, either way you sound very ignorant and offensive.

Vallhala · 19/01/2011 16:18

Well, I guess that your username doesn't stand for Reverend, Rev084. All God's creatures and all that... ?

Two of mine are German Shepherds. They're what are considered to be "guard dogs". That's because the majority of the public is remarkably uneducated when it comes to dogs - in fact the GSD is traditionally a herding dog. So are Rotties... like the one for who only an hour ago I saved from being put to sleep purely because some cunt didn't want him, threw him out into the street, whereupon he got picked up by the dog warden and taken to the pound and had only 7 days before he could legally be killed. Were it not for me he would have been killed tonight because his 7 days were up and the pound management, a profit making concern, knows that people are loathe to adopt Rotties thanks to so much ignorance about breed specifics.

Mine are only 2 of the scores of dogs I or my children might interact with in a single, average day when we help out at rescue... where there are many "abandoned ugly, nasty looking dogs". Dogs which are as soft as butter and deserve better than death by human ignorance. They've often been abandoned by hugely ignorant people and are overlooked by equally hugely ignorant people.

These are the type of people who think that because 2 of my dogs are GSD they are likely to bite their child's face off given half a chance.

They're the type who don't understand that it isn't the look or the breed which matters, it's the personality of the dog.

It's a bit like people really. Just because the man's covered in tatts doesn't make him a thief, just because he's black doesn't give you the right to accuse him of being a mugger.

Or maybe you cross the road when you see a black man too?

DooinMeCleanin · 19/01/2011 16:22

Dd2 has four GSD 'friends' all which have mouths that are at her face height. Three of them live together/walk together and huddle around her when they see her so all you can see is a mass of fur with a little pig tail sticking out of the middle. She loves these dogs more than any of other 'friends' they are her 'best friends'. Infact all of her favourite 'friends' are bigger than her.

She still has her face exactly where it should be.
