to feel threatened by ALL dog owners...

because you can't tell until the damage has been done, which ones are good (And yes, I do know many of them are very responsible)

However, even 'some' good dog owners with friendly dogs with exceptional behaviour could kill my nephew.

He has an allergy to dogs which is potentially fatal. He has been hospitalised a couple of time due to his reaction (inability to breath).

Why can't ALL dog owners, even the good ones keep their dogs away from other people as a default?

I've never said that dooner.

Whilst I feel sorry for your Nephew's allergy, the idea that all dogs should be kept on leads...therefore getting no proper excercise is quite absurd.

We cant go around changing the world for the miniscule minority...it's unworkable I'm afraid.

LadyBiscuit · 19/01/2011 10:00

If you have a severe dog allergy then presumably it makes sense to avoid places where dogs are likely to be off the lead, no?

CalamityKate · 19/01/2011 10:00

I don't think anyone has suggested dogs be kept on leads all the time Mutznutz - just that they should be prevented from running up to people who may be dog phobic or have allergies or whatever.

faverolles · 19/01/2011 10:00

(no idea what Seder is Confused Bloody autocorrect! Can't remember what I typed either)

StartingAfresh · 19/01/2011 10:01

mutz Where have I said all dogs should be on leads?

I haven't said that nor would I?

But I do think that until they are trained they should be on leads yes.

As a learner driver cannot go it alone.

Which is everywhere Lady Biscuit. You might not realise it because your world is very different to my nephews, - but dogs are off leads EVERYWHERE!

doonhamer · 19/01/2011 10:04

faverolles - a Seder is a Hebrew word for order or sequence. So Google says Grin

LadyBiscuit · 19/01/2011 10:04

Yes but responsible dog owners don't let their dogs off leads if they know they won't come back when they're called. So you're not talking about responsible ones, you're talking about irresponsible ones

Deciduousblonde · 19/01/2011 10:04

sigh

But your title reads ''Am I unreasonable to feel threatened by all dog owners'

So yes, you are. However you make valid points elsewhere regarding dogs jumping up at your nephew etc.

As has already been said, play parks have areas which do not allow dogs. It is perfectly reasonable to expect a dog owner to be allowed to exercise their dog offlead in the grassed areas.

DooinMeCleanin · 19/01/2011 10:05

You did actually say that op, when Beer asked you how far away her dog should be you replied "On a lead". You did not add "unless in a park and/or under control"

The opening of your post is very inflammatory. You cannot be surprised that you have gotten this reaction.

faverolles · 19/01/2011 10:06

Thanks doonhamer.
Im obviously very clever to manage to fit that into a sentence :o

coccyx · 19/01/2011 10:15

I feel that way about children, to say they live in fear is ridiculous! get some therapy

spikeycow · 19/01/2011 10:19

Just stay indoors and stop bugging normal people

MrSpoc · 19/01/2011 10:21

The way i read your posts im not sure if your nephew has and allargy or if he is just scared of dogs.

Which is it? in the meantime i would keep your nephew locked in the house. all them mad dogs roming freely about. Do cats have the same effect?

2blessed2bstressed · 19/01/2011 10:29

Boo!!! Never been threatening before. And all because I happen to own a dog. According to your post title, it doesn't matter what I do with him, the mere fact of his existence in my life makes me threatening. Bah >

mutznutz · 19/01/2011 10:30

That's how I read it too Dooin Smile

JBellingham · 19/01/2011 10:31

Get him a Chinese Crested puppy, they are bald, cute and hilarious.

How hard would it be to #pick up shit
keep dog on lead
train them to instant recall
train them not to approach or jump at poeple

ta da
Living in harmony.
I managed all of the above when a dog owner.

MrsNonSmoker · 19/01/2011 10:34

I make a huge deal about keeping my dog on a lead and have posted several times recently about irresponsible dog owners etc etc., I hate it when people think the world literally owes them and their dog a living iyswim, but even I am starting to get fed up with people who seem to object to dogs existing. If my dog is on a lead for ever and ever, and I pull him away every time I see a child/another dog/a person or even a paper bag blowing across the grass, how on earth am I threatening anyone?

I feel threatened by people sometimes, and they are always off leads!! We all have to live with society's current idea of tolerance and, currently, that does mean dogs are allowed outside of their own home.

PortBlacksandEventually · 19/01/2011 10:35

There are few enough places to walk dogs and give them a really good run. Folks who walk in the country without dogs and then moan about there being dogs there are being unreasonable.

Riven · 19/01/2011 10:42

perhpas dog owners should be campaigning for decent licences and more warden patrols to catch the irresponisble feckers who cause all these problems?
Our local park is a sea of dog shit. People like my mum who had up to 14 dogs picked up every single poo and she's a little old lady and every dog trained to instant recall. If she can do it, why cant others?

MrsNonSmoker · 19/01/2011 10:47

Definitely bring back dog licences and dog wardens (one funding the other?) - how about a driving test type exam for owners, you can't go out on your own till you can get one to reverse!

MrSpoc · 19/01/2011 10:49

I say let all dogs be returned to the wild. then lets see what happens.
