to hate when parents do this?

I was at a friend's house for dinner last night. It was a group of old college friends and we always have a great time together catching up. The friend hosting has a ten year old ds and a twelve year old dd. When we all arrived they came in and chatted to us for a while and we asked them all about school etc. Then they 'escaped' back to the toom with the telly with some sweets we had brought them.

However, when we sat down for dinner their mum said 'DS and DD, stop watching telly and come in and chat to us' (they had eaten earlier). So, instead of having a nice girls night catch up we had to have a polite, suitable for the children conversation.

AIBU to hate when parents plonk their children into the middle of what is meant to be an adult occasion?

I think adults need time for their conversation away from children, just as children need that same privacy when they are with their friends. If a 12 yr old had a friend round would an adult go and sit in with them and chat? - unlikely I think.

What?! You mean my 7 week old DD is not an equal partner for conversation?! I'm pretty sure she'll be able to say taramasalata and wasabi in no time [deluded PBF emoticon] Grin

I remember when I was 10-12yrs old...........I was dispatched to another room/bed......

except I never did - I'd move myself into a position/place where I could hear as much as the conversation as possible........usually resulting in me only getting half of it and when retelling my friends/brother at a later time getting it all wrong Grin

haha baroque - i used to do this too at that age, i was a right little eavesdropper :o except once i overheard my mum telling her friends how "difficult" i was :(

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 18/01/2011 19:18

my DS1 is the same (10).......except he doesn't realise that I was an absolute champion eavesdropper so ALWAYS catch him out and find him lol
