to give my kids this for supper tonight?

Hot chocolates and with frothy tops and sprinkles and warm fruity scones, homemade Jam and vanilla whipped cream?

They've had a big breakfast of Croissants (massive ones) and then snacks and a huge plate each of pasta, cauliflower, peas and pancetta in a homemade cheese sauce.

I just cant be fagged to cook again, and have no bread for sarnies... its been a long day with earache and two kids who are exhausted and easy to cry.

So, the supper - it was considered ok in the 1940's - will it do tonight?!

Sounds lovely. Proper 19th c high tea. I think I would be more likely to do little bacon pancakes, or whip up some soup. but that's because I am a mean mother who likes to torture her children.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 15/01/2011 17:19

Who cares if it's showing off, made me bloody Envy

Where is it you live again ??

nickelbabysnatcher · 15/01/2011 17:19

she can't - she's got no bread Shock

I think it sounds like a lovely treat tea. :)

mamalovesmojitos · 15/01/2011 17:20

why is it showing off?

Boobalina · 15/01/2011 17:31

Well that took all of five mins for them to eat instead of the usual 30 plus mins of me saying, 'look stop bloody asking me every thought that comes into your head and eat your carrots will you'

Son is totally stuffed and watching Ice Age 3, Daughter is colouring in loo roll tubes (?) and I am going to lie about what time it is soon and put them to bed a bit earlier than 7! Luckily DS is a bit ropey at telling the time still (muwhahahahaha)

I think it's a complete myth about the "sugar rush" thing anyway. Nobody's every been able to prove it inder scientific test conditions. And anecdotally, I know my children can have 12 hours sleep and three perfectly balances, healthy home cooked meals and still be beyond foul, then have 6 hours sleep and a diet composed entirely of Haribo and chocolate and be positiely angelic.

I think it's about parental expectation.

And I'm off to bake some scones for tea!

backwardpossom · 15/01/2011 17:42

I don't know if it's a complete myth, seeker (I'm thinking of the kids I teach who go to the wee shop across from the school before the first lesson and buy 2 litre bottles of Irn Bru for breakfast Hmm) but I don't think it's as bad as is often made out and I suspect there may be more to it than just sugar.

Boobalina · 15/01/2011 17:44

Mine were some fruit ones from co-op that were about to go off so I must have stuffed them in the freezer!

(my freezer is full of stuff that was about to reach its sell by date)

I agree about the sugar rush - but mega chemically things, they do make my son go bonkers and very bolshy and rude.

I wish I didn't think it was a myth, actually, then when my children are horrible I could blame it on the mars bars!

Punkatheart · 15/01/2011 17:51

Yes - well sugar has (apparently) been disproven as a cause of hyperactivity.

I think the first comment on this thread summed up the answer to this thread:

Will you be my mummy?

How fast can we get the adoption papers through? I am STARVING.

mangoandlime · 15/01/2011 17:52

I do love a little stealth boast.

What where you thinking though?

Only joking. Smile

Sounds lovely! I too am starving. Dd actually had pancakes with strawberries and whippy cream. I was feeling a bit bad about that - but sod it, I am going to find her pyjamas, make her hot choc and pour myself a large glass of wine.....

aStarWithHerOwnWays · 15/01/2011 18:00

mmmmmmmmm, scones.

WestYorkshirePudding · 15/01/2011 18:03

I've given mine carrot soup with pitta bread for their tea as they've had fruit shoots, crisps, chocolate and sweets this afternoon at soft play.

I'm hoping that the homemade soup cancels out all the crap they've eaten earlier...

PocketMouse · 15/01/2011 18:04

I find that a big sugar rush an hour before bed sees them crash JUST in time for a peaceful night's sleep.

Of course you have to deal with all the madness at bathtime, but it's worth it for a quiet evening.

Boobalina · 15/01/2011 18:12

ahhh pocketmouse.... I only bath mine every other night and huzzah! Last night was bath night!!!! So no bath tonight!

Have sent them up to get their jimjams on and will get them both into my bed and read them some Harry potter then its my DVD and some Sherry and some me time!

I asked my daughter if she would like fish and chips as a special treat. The eyebrows went up...'I have had my quota of junk food for today, mother.'

Very cheeky from a child who I reared on sugar-free, organic 'doesn't make me feel guilty' food.

Sigh.

Boobalina · 15/01/2011 18:39

Right, they are in bed and I'm hoping they'll be asleep very soon! Going to tidy up a little, light some nice candles, pour a massive drink and start my film - HELLO SATURDAY NIGHT!!!!

I know how to live!!! (on my own with two kids Smile)
