to not want DH to leave me alone with DS tonight?

I think DS has come down with swine flu. He got up this morning with a runny nose but generally in good spirits. Went out shopping this morning and had to come home straight away as DS was coughing, shivery and really tired. He now has a temperature of 38.7 and is really lethargic and can't get him to drink. Obviously I'm feeling worried :(

DH is due to go to visit friends in Bristol tonight (we are 90 minutes drive from there) and I'm worried about being by myself in case things get worse (I don't drive) and I need help. My family don't live close by and nor do my close mates. I am reluctant to ask him to cancel as he's had to cancel nights out a few times for similar reasons and feel a bit of an ogre telling her DH he needs to stay in to help me nurse sick DS. If DS remains as he is, I can cope easily and will feel a bit of a dick making him stay in with me.

Would I be being U if I suggested he might postpone it?

He has cold and flu symptoms, bad ones and now a red rash and you forgot to check to see if it is non blanching? You should check now, it could be something serious.

Also, as cognitive said meningococcal rashes "tend" to be non blanching

skydance "as long as the rash disappears when you press it, then it's viral, even if it spreads to his chest it's fine as long as it goes when you press it with your fingers or a glass"

This is incorrect. It is always a viral rash because it disappears.

Oldposternamechanger · 15/01/2011 21:53

ISNT I MEAN, IT ISNT ALWAYS A VIRAL RASH BECAUSE IT DISAPPEARS

Why are my typos always on the important words!

CognitiveDissident · 15/01/2011 22:11

if the rash is confined to his mouth & chin then it's probably irritation from the vomiting.

IMO extreme drowsiness and noisy laboured breathing are more important symptoms then a rash. Whit meningitis/septicaemia the rash is usually the last symptom to appear.

don't mean to cone across as a hysterical mother but DS has a rash around his mouth and behind his ears now. Nowhere else on his body though. Can anyone put my mind at rest please?!

putting mind at rest dd had this last week, lasted a few days but rash lasted a little longer, pharmasist felt it was just viral. went on a bit longer. kept her off school was begining to think it was measles or scarlet fever but the day I was taking her to drs she woke up and it had gone.

the rash covered her mouth inside and out, up face and down neck back and chest. was only very bad on face tho.

bupcakesandcunting · 15/01/2011 22:31

The good news is that the rash has gone. The bad news is that DS vommed all over my bed when I got him out to check for blanching Grin

I am letting him sleep in my bed tonight. I thought he'd finished being sick but I'm not sure. I worry he will choke on his own sick in the night if I leave him in his room. Oh god, am hysterical mother...

coxsackie-,echo- & enteroviruses all give vague flu-like symptoms and rash. They're all mild, self-limiting and are treated symptomatically...

Eg
Fifth disease: red rash on face, cheeks, lacy rash on arms and legs

Hand, foot & mouth disease: bright red rash, followed by blisters on hands, feet and mouth

Herpangina; red rash around mouth, throat, followed by ulcers in mouth and back of throat

...just off the top of my head. We seem to have had them all this xmas

CognitiveDissident · 15/01/2011 22:39

Use big bath towels to contain the vomit. Put your DS on one, cover him with another.Any accidents then the towel can be dumped in the bath/shower and sluiced off. They're brilliant at absorbing spills and save your bedding

Not at all bunting I put them in my bed when really poorly as I worry they will choke if vomiting, and I'm on my 3rd child!

Have you done the dragging really poorly child out of bed yet and standing propping up under very bright light to see if ok with it, I have done in the past Blush and then insist they move neck around to see if hurts, when all they want to do is get back in bed and sleep.

I do the towel thing too, saves changing the bed in the middle of the night.

Glad the rash has gone anyway, one less thing to worry about.

GandalfyCarawak · 15/01/2011 22:57

Oh, bupcakes, I feel your pain. My (asthmatic) son has become a tiny bit wheezy tonight and I actually cried because he hasn't had the swine flu jab yet, they've run out at the surgery. He's having it on monday, but god, we do worry when they get sick! Hope you have a good night's sleep!

tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 22:57

mine sleeps in my bed when they are that ill esp vomiting and temp, only way you can be sure to rest and know you will wake if needed.

PeeringIntoTheWintryVoid · 15/01/2011 23:06

Oh what a worry. I hope DS is fine, and doesn't develop any awful complications. As others have said - he seems likely to have a virus with accompanying viral rash, and hopefully nothing more serious than that. Fingers crossed for him though!

bally2 · 15/01/2011 23:08

skydance, i do the same. my mother used to do it with me. she once slept in wih me when i was 22 and had tonsillitis...yes i was 22!

bupcakesandcunting · 16/01/2011 00:25

He is in my bed now, snoring like a good 'un. At least one if us is getting some sleep! Thank you all for your kind words :)

How are you feeling now ? Less worried ?

bupcakesandcunting · 16/01/2011 12:48

Yes less worried now. He was running a high temp' through the night but luckily the vomiting stopped. He is really washed out now on the sofa, bless him.

Now DH has driven over to MILs as her emphesema is playing up and she can't breathe :( It's all fun and games here!
