to be slightly alarmed at this advice

was reading up on worms as think dd may have them and found advice on a well known uk website stating.

to inspect for worms it is best done in the evening when the child is asleep using a torch. spread childs legs and inspect anus.

Hmm i would not dream of carrying anything so invasive out when my dd was asleep.

well, if you suspect she has worms, how else are you going to find out? it isn't wrong to check your child's anus for worms you know. better that than let her be uncomfortable and maybe get ill.

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 20:07

no of course not but when they are asleep?

OP posts:
bumpybecky · 14/01/2011 20:07

they come out when it's dark though

I've no idea how they can tell, as it must be fairly dark where they are to start with!

would you be happier if you woke her up first?

thisisyesterday · 14/01/2011 20:07

lol

you don't need to. if she has symptoms of worms the GP will normally prescribe Ovex for you all without actually seeing them up close and personal!

ohnoshedittant · 14/01/2011 20:08

I suppose it depends how olds your DD is. If she's 14 it's prob a bit out of line. If she's little then I think that is the best way to do it; at least that's the advice I've been given.

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 20:09

im not alarmed at inspecting for worms but just find it a little puzzling to wait untill they are asleep to do it. my dd would freak out if she woke up and i was shinning torch up her arse.

OP posts:
ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 14/01/2011 20:09

you can always wake her and ask to check.

thisisyesterday · 14/01/2011 20:09

i guess it depends how old they are though... if she is older than about 7 or 8 I guess it could be a bit uncomfortable for her if she woke to find you doing it!! lol

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 20:10

I've no idea how they can tell, as it must be fairly dark where they are to start with!

that made me laugh. Grin

I don't quite see what your problem is; if you've been reading up on worms you'll know that they tend to come out of the rectum at night to lay their eggs around the anus. Taking a look at night is one of the ways to spot them. You are mearly looking at your child's bottom (as I guess you'd do when changing her nappy or wiping after a toilet trip to ensure she's clean). It's best done when your DD is asleep so she's still and it's easier for you to see.

TubbyDuffs · 14/01/2011 20:18

FGS they are not asking you to stick the torch up there!

I had my child recently come into our bed in the night crying that his bum was itchy, and I put the light on and told him to bend over and had a look. They are only very small, but believe me, you can see them.

Sent DH out to the 24 hour pharmacy and hey presto.... sorted!

Invasive, really?

Woodlands · 14/01/2011 20:21

i get what the OP means - children are allowed to have some dignity and spreading their bum cheeks while they sleep would seem to remove it! Can't think of a way round it though - have not got to that stage yet myself (DS is 6 months).

I remember once aged maybe 8 or 9 discovering that I had worms - I could see them wiggling in my poo. I never told anyone as I was too embarrassed, and I assume they went away of their own accord eventually!

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 20:21

i dont have a problem looking at her bum but yes i do think its pretty invasive when a child is asleep.

elliott · 14/01/2011 20:26

Why don't you tell her beforehand you are going to do it? Then she won't be alarmed if she wakes up, but chances are she won't notice or will have forgotten in the morning even if she does stir. I can see why you might feel uncomfortable about doing this without 'permission' (although personally I would feel ok about doing it with my kids, but your family may have a different 'culture' about personal space etc).

My mum used to look for worms after bathtime by puting us over her lap and having a good peer between the cracks!!!

DayShiftDoris · 14/01/2011 21:10

My son rubbed his bum across the carpet (through undies thank god) the two times he had worm... no torch required.

AIBU that I LOL at this thread?

tomhardyismydh · 14/01/2011 21:47

ha ha dayshift.

YANBU to lol at this thread. however I it is not a wind up thread, I was alarmed at the advice given.

OP posts:
Unwind · 14/01/2011 21:48

what kind of children would sleep through that?

Envy
TheMonster · 14/01/2011 21:50

Can't you just treat her for them anyway?

Unwind, what's with the envy face?

amberleaf · 14/01/2011 21:51

Its purely because the blighters come out at night when the child is sleeping!

Amazingly and luckily ive never had to do this!

Nits however are another matter.

charliesmommy · 14/01/2011 21:51

My husband would probably sleep though it.. never mind the kids ........

Unwind · 14/01/2011 21:52

I am jealous of any parent whose children sleep so soundly

TheMonster · 14/01/2011 21:53

Aha! I thought you were jealous of...oh nevermind...
