was reading up on worms as think dd may have them and found advice on a well known uk website stating.

to inspect for worms it is best done in the evening when the child is asleep using a torch. spread childs legs and inspect anus.

Hmm i would not dream of carrying anything so invasive out when my dd was asleep.

Hobgoblin - I know you're suffering, I also have 4 kids - the one time we had worms in the house we followed this advice

  1. everybody gets dosed, has fingernails cut short

  2. every bed gets stripped and boiled washed

  3. every bedroom get wet dusted every where - youngest children's plastic toys get washed as do fabric toys

  4. every room gets good hoover including moving furniture

5)beds remade

  1. 2nd dose of Ovex

touch wood, pray to infidel of choice and sacrifice chicken

I will add the arse torch to my essential parenting tools

DuplicitousBitch · 15/01/2011 15:19

i didn't bother with the wet dusting etc. just changed the beds. i think some of you are developing ocd

Doogle2 · 15/01/2011 17:15

I am laughing out loud at the idea torch sales will now double and tonight every mumsnet parent will be diving under their childrens covers....Grin

Reading this thread has made me itch all over

ednurse · 15/01/2011 17:21

You can also sometimes see them in your DCs underwear..check in the morning.

PuppyMonkey · 15/01/2011 17:27

Don't worry, if your child really has worms they will be so uncomfortable and itchy, they will never actually get to sleep in first place. Get the orange tablets from Boots.

sarahitaly · 15/01/2011 17:47

I've never had to check for worms, but I have been known to administer a suppository while he was asleep.

Didn't want to wake a poorly little boy just to give him his medicine.

Made sense to me to just pop them in while he was spark out and avoid him losing any rest.

AlicesWonderland · 15/01/2011 17:51

we were never asked to do that!

dd had a poo in the potty (thank god or I would probably have never known) and there were loads of white stringy bits in it.... a quick google and straight to the gps lol

I would have never been able to look up her bottom with a torch without her waking up Grin and she is the type to tell EVERYONE what mummy did last night....

katykoo · 15/01/2011 18:02

When my 5 year old ds had them he couldn't sleep anyway.
Had a look at his "Furry bum"( his own words) and there they were, didn't need a torch!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 15/01/2011 18:24

I can't imagine being able to check my ds's bums without them noticing. The are 6 and 8, I'm sure they would notice!

Anyway, I don't think it's entirely necessary tbh. When I suspected ds2 of having it we all took a tablet, bought from the chemist, job done...

I had worms alot as a child, it was pink liquid you had to take back then, disgusting stuff. Tablets are marginally more palatable!

SoupDragon · 15/01/2011 18:26

If I suspected worms I would simply worm my children.

katykoo · 15/01/2011 19:16

The medicine doesn't do them any harm if they don't have them, in fact they advise that all the family take a dose to prevent the worms from being passed on.

tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 22:32

I did check last night when she was awake just a bit of a red bottom was all.

I managed a look at her poo this morning.

bless her she did come to me this evenimg and said. You cant look at my poo for worms tonight mummy its shot right under the water and round the corner.

I had them for ages when I was about 8 or 9. Didn't tell my mum for some reason and was horribly fascinated.

So they must eventually die off somehow cos I aint got them now. Unless....

dearprudence · 15/01/2011 22:59

OP has your DD still got an itchy bum tonight? Is it very itchy? If so, please get her some Ovex. Threadworms are really uncomfortable, especially at night. Please don't leave her like this.

tomhardyismydh · 15/01/2011 23:05

no her bottom was very red so put some bempanthem on it last night and this morning. and its fine now, she hasnt complained today. she was digging around and saying it was sore after school and all evening. but had a bath and cream and seems fine. have checked her poo aswell. but she hasnt mentioned it tonight.

i checked her bum last night and this morning and and no signs.

MumNWLondon · 15/01/2011 23:31

If they have an itchy bum then just treat anyway - the medication says to treat the whole family. I have bought ovex several times, when DS said its itchy... would not dream of checking their bum while they are sleeping.

vixy0007 · 17/01/2011 12:20

charliesmommy my DP wouldnt, if i go anywhere near that end of the bed hes up like a shot thinking its his birthday.

I think if i thought my DS had worms, hes 3, i'd just have a look down the loo when hes finished? But i dont think theres anything wrong with checking, if the child was old enough to understand i think i'd probably let them know i'd be doing it first.
