to worry about my brother

I've had my brother staying with me for the last 5 days, he came Saturday and went home after school today. Last night I had a hysterical boy begging me to let him live with me.
I spoke with him and I'm really concerned with how he is being treated by my mum and stepdad. Apparently they go out to the pub several times a week (neither work) and leave him home alone, leaving him on his own. From what he said I get the impression that no-one spends anytime with him and that he is routinely told he should be grateful that is fed and has a roof over his head. He's 13 by the way

If you cant afford to have him live with you could he come round for a few evenings or nights a week, and get some positive attention that way. You sound like a great sister.

My 13 year old boy loves attention from us parents and we would never leave him home alone at night.

i would certainly say something to your mum and stepdad.

I spoke to them about him, they agree that they go to the pub 2-3 times a week leaving him home alone. Stepdad insisted that he is fed and that he lives in a heated home and so he is meeting his responsibilitys. Mum used it as an opportunity to say I was interferring and that just because I've started working in a nursery doesn't make me an expert on children and that she knows a lot more about raising kids than me.
I don't really think anything will change to be honest, I did tell my brother to text me and he can come over whenever he wants and that I'm availible if he ever needs/wants to talk about anything. Other than that I'm not sure what else I can do.

I think you should speak to your mum and see what is oing on. If he was to stay with you you would get his CB of £20 pw.

YANBU I think that this situation is very worrying.

Thats sad to hear, I agree there isn't much you can do other than provide an outlet for him if he needs it

I think he is lucky to have such a caring sister living close by. All you can do is what you are doing at the moment. You are keeping an eye on him and he has somewhere to turn to if he needs it.

I'm not surprised your mum reacted like she did, nobody wants to be questioned about their parenting but I don't know what else you could have done. Perhaps she'll quietly take it on board let's hope but if she does she'll probably not want you to think you've changed her.
