I work two and a half days a week which is what is putting me off the idea.

My daughter and husband are desperate for a puppy. I have grown up with dogs so i know how much is involved in having a puppy. The thing is my mum never worked so was always around to walk the dog etc. I know she thinks i should not have one as i work. However i doubt there will come a tme when i dont work so does that mean we should never have a pet. I think having a pet is a good thing for children and would hate them to miss out.

Am i being unreasonable is contemplating getting a puppy or do otjher people manage to combine pets and work.

Scuttle - it's not that black and white love! There are horrible people out there - a ridiculous woman I know of with more money than sense just got two Cavalier pups and, only after bringing them home did she question the fact that the place she bought them from was teeming with CKC bitches and pups. It was obviously a puppy farm. Twit...
However our pup was found via word of mouth -we are in a very rural area and the large majority of pups are to be found on the local farmstore ad board. They are largely from working dogs. Ours was from a local gamekeeper who wanted to have a litter from his best bitch before he had her spayed. I had a Spaniel who I bred from a few years ago (sadly no longer with us) and I advertised in the local newspaper - all the pups were 100% with their KC regs etc and I actually turned people away if I didn't feel that they were right. I still get e-mail updates on all of them.
OP - you could always try phoning breeders - preferably KC reg ones - and seeing if they have any older dogs. My father works so did just this and has two lovely labs. One went back to the breeder because the person that bought it was unable to look after it and the other was being bullied by their other dogs. Both are now very happy - and daddy didn't have to worry about the puppy issues.

Midori - just in case I get flamed for breeding unnecessarily. I did think very long and hard about bringing more pups into an already over populated world (would that we were so conscientious when breeding children!) - however I had 5 different people who were incredibly keen for one of her pups because she had an incredibly good pedigree and was a beautiful dog. I only advertised because she ended up having 11 pups. Incidentally she had been bred by friends and rehomed to me after her original owners had divorced...
