To love living in the North East?

Following yesterday's thread about the "horrors" of living in Manchester and the North in general, what do you love most about the North East? Where do you recommend people to visit? What aspects of life do you like best here? I would nominate Durham, especially the cathedral, the fish and chips in Whitby and the architecture of Grainger Street. Anyone else?

where abouts gm? My parents live in stockton

stressheaderic · 13/01/2011 20:47

I'm not from the morth east, I'm from Liverpool (could start similar thread, amazing place) but I absolutely love the north-east. What a wonderful corner of the country.
DP and I had a last minute sneaky minibreak in Durham last year when I was 7 months pregnant and it was just lovely. We called in at High Force on the way home and had a big homemade roast dinner in the pub opposite, and I could have stayed there forever. Big up the north east, and those lucky MNers who live there :)

pranma · 13/01/2011 20:51

All of it always but no 1 the people
I grew up in Ferryhill, went to school in Durham, dad's family from Spennymoor-yes there are rough bits but there are rough bits everywhere.I moved away in 1965 but it is always 'home' and I get a physical nostalgia pain on the rare occasions I am able to visit.

goodmanners · 13/01/2011 20:53

Stockton but originally middlesbrough stealthy

DamselInDisgrace · 13/01/2011 21:00

What exactly is pease pudding? I see it in the supermarket all the time and have no idea what's in the pot. It scares me a bit.

duckyfuzz · 13/01/2011 21:01

I moved to the north east 15 years ago and love it, every so often I have yearnings to move back to the Cotswolds, but this is soon remedied by a trip into Teesdale or Weardale, or onto the moors, or up to Hadrian's wall, or out to the coast or shopping in Newcastle, or walking round the river in Durham, or the northumberland coast...the list is endless!

Minshu · 13/01/2011 21:01

It's lovely up here - beautiful beaches, easy reach of stunning countryside, some decent pubs, (mostly) friendly people, good mix of cultures. The RSC comes to us, as do a lot of bands.

DD and I went to the aquarium at Tynemouth yesterday, which is pretty good. Hadrian's wall and other historical monuments. I'm so lucky :)

"There used to be a great italian on Gosforth High Street, Newcastle called Made in Italy. I have many a fond memory in there. Closed when the boss 'Mr Grumpy Knickers' died I think."

Company I used to work for bought it, tis called San Lorenzo now lol They also own Popolo to whomever it was who mentions their yummy cocktails.

I live in the village with the daft monument Hmm

deembee · 13/01/2011 21:46

Another middlesbrough born and bred girl here. Love the North East, just 10 mins and your at the seaside or the moors or in town, nowhere else like it.

pranma · 13/01/2011 22:07

Pease pudding-yummy especially in a ham sandwich you cant really buy it anywhere else.
Its lovely hot or cold.

suesfault · 13/01/2011 22:08

juneybean - I was just going to post about San Lorenzos, I still like it although its not quite the same without the little old chap.

summerbird - do you always get a vision of the mirrored entrance when you see an MN post from TrillianAstra?

And whoever mentioned La Stalla, I had my 18th birthday in the one in Newcastle and I've just had a flasback to white wedges and a long hippy floaty dress.

Great thread

MuddlingMackem · 13/01/2011 23:44

spiggy Well, East is the only one to have a Metro station. :)

1944girl I know Benwell a bit. Used to attend a club which met in the main community room in the (now closed due to relocation) library. Some good shops on the main street, but definitely had a bit of a run-down vibe. That library was very nice. Haven't been in the new one though.

Summerbird73 · 14/01/2011 08:51

suesfault i always picture TrillianAstra as a Geordie Rockbird!

echt · 14/01/2011 08:57

If I wasn't in Oz, I'd live in the north-east like a shot.

Summerbird73 · 14/01/2011 09:00

and as for that entrance to Trillians - i have lost count of the amount of times i have fallen down those stairs! And thanks to the mirrored entrance i usually watched myself do it!

What about the Cooperage anyone? Top indie nightspot of the Quayside. Of course their best days were the days before they cleaned it up! Again i lose count of the times i fell down those rickety stairs Grin

I've come back to this thread, I'm loving all the memories that are being brought back to me from all of your posts. I so miss Durham.
I particulary love the Northumberland area and spent a lot of my holidays in the Northumberland coastal area when I was a child, and now I take my own kids. I love Bamburgh, Holy Island & Seahouses. The crab sandwiches on Holy Island are fab. Best beach for us is Budle Bay, it's just beautiful in every way.

Summerbird73 · 14/01/2011 09:11

mincenmash my DS is 19mo and we live in the north west now, but i am so looking forward to taking him to Bamburgh, Holy Island and Seahouses when he is older - you just cant whack it. Have you noticed that the ice cream van by Bamburgh Castle on the main road has been there for about 30 years - its the same van!

I was brought up in the north of Newcastle so within 10 mins of leaving my house you were driving up the A1 in the most stunning countryside. But also within 20 mins we could be in Tynemouth.

I also love Craster - stinky fishing village but it is soooo timeless (ie it hasnt changed in about 100 years!!)

If i ever moved back it would be either towards Bamburgh or the other way towards Hexham.

God this thread is making me soooo homesick!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 14/01/2011 09:15

I adore Northumberland, absolutely beautiful...I'd love to live up there. We had the most wonderful holiday up there last year, we would be back this year if it wasn't so far to go. Stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, wonderful history, the ds's loved it.

Holy Island was just wonderful. As was Berwick. The ds's loved all the history and walking around the ramparts...and that amazing viaduct!

May have to go back next year!

mincenmash · 14/01/2011 09:16

I think when i lived there I took it all for granted but now i realise what i am missing.
Summerbird73 - do you know i never realised it was the same ice-cream van.
There's also a brilliant place near Holy Island, that i only just discovered with my children, called the Barn at Beal. It has a lovely cafe/restaraunt and a bird of prey centre. It has stunning views across to holy island.

Charley and Sippy I'm close by Im in South Shields...
A pub in a cave! Marsden Grotto (met dp there)
Going 'over the water' to Tynemouth on a Sunday to stroll around the market and a walk along Long sands.
I adore Staithes in Stocken for a dirty lovely weekend.
Love Alnwick, Hexham and the vast amount of cheap uncommercial campsites within a one hour drive.

Summerbird73 · 14/01/2011 10:18

i am now on rightmove looking at cottages in Bamburgh!
