To love living in the North East?

Following yesterday's thread about the "horrors" of living in Manchester and the North in general, what do you love most about the North East? Where do you recommend people to visit? What aspects of life do you like best here? I would nominate Durham, especially the cathedral, the fish and chips in Whitby and the architecture of Grainger Street. Anyone else?

was that the bakery on the corner by Haymarket Metty?

Three words for you DurhamDurham

'Pauls-For-Fashion'!!!!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/01/2011 19:59

Are there any other Mackems out there?!
That remember the light up Echo man on a Saturday telling us if we had won, drawn or lost!

DurhamDurham · 12/01/2011 20:00

Olivers was on Northumberlan Street just down from Mark One. The seating area was down some stairs, it was v dark and you couldn't see what you were eating but it all tasted good!

I never did go to Pauls-for-Fashions,maybe it was out of my league Grin

chaya5738 · 12/01/2011 20:01

So what exactly is the North East then? I mentioned Whitby and was told that wasn't the NE. But someone else had also mentioned Whitby.

I am not originally from the UK and am very confused Blush

DrSeuss · 12/01/2011 20:03

I mentioned Whitby in my OP. It's Yorkshire but remember, the original meaning of Northumberland is North of the Humber!

All of the above Smile

And The Captital for putting up with hosting the lovely Durham Mnetter curry nights out away from the children Grin

well i'm a southener living up norf and all i can say is it feels safe and quaint. and curd tarts are rather nice..
but that's about it really..shall go and seek out yesterday's thread..!

ClaireDeLoon · 12/01/2011 20:17

KenDodds - yes I remember the echo man although I'm from Co. Durham not Sunderland (although was born in Sunderland General). I remember because we'd see him when we were driving back from my grannies. Is the echo man not there now?

Bunbaker · 12/01/2011 20:21

I love, love, love the North East, and I mean Northumberland. Whitby isn't the North East to me.

OH is from Northumberland and we visit his family several times a year. Places I love: Towns - Morpeth and Alnwick, National Trust properties, castles, the fabulous coast, Holy Island, Roman remains, beautiful walks, nature reserves etc, etc. I could go on as there is so much to see and do. The people are friendly and welcoming, the countryside is beautiful and the roads are quiet (except for the A1).

DurhamDurham · 12/01/2011 20:32

Well countless it wouldn't be fair to have Northern-bashing on two threads would it? Where's the equality in that? So yes, away with you Grin

duckymum · 12/01/2011 20:33

YANBU at all - 'tis much the best place to live - not that I'm biased or anything.

DrSeuss · 12/01/2011 20:37

KathMBC- for Newcastle parking, park in the blue zone at the Metro Centre, or Heworth metro station, or Kings-summat-or-other on the way to the airport. You can get a bus to Eldon Sq from the Metro Centre.

I'm not sure if he is there I must look! Was telling my Irish DH about it and he thought I was mad.

GrendelsMum · 12/01/2011 20:39

Personally, I love Stockport Hat Factory. Have I mentioned that anywhere before? Wink

KaraStarbuckThrace · 12/01/2011 20:42

Grin @ spiggy.

Next one will be half term!

gibba8 · 12/01/2011 20:44

Lurve this thread and the North East. Has anyone mentioned the beautiful beach and castle at Bamburgh? Also the quayside Market 15-20 years ago was brilliant-all changed now though :(

DurhamDurham · 12/01/2011 21:26

gibba8 the Quayside is fab these days. Lots of families (and cool trendy types) wandering around.I love it, whenever we have friends to stay we take them there and it's always been a hit.

ChezzaB · 12/01/2011 22:00

I always class myself as being from the North East and I live in Scarborough, however I have been pulled up for it before but what should Scarborough be classed as if not the North East?

DurhamDurham · 12/01/2011 22:05

When I was little (and before we had discovered holidays to Spain!) we used to go to Scarborough for our holidays.
The park there was fab, with many rumours abound about Oswald the Duck who only had one leg.
I always thought it was classed as North Yorkshire.Would love to go back one day.

ChezzaB · 12/01/2011 22:13

Yeah I guess it is North Yorkshire but in my reckoning it is in the north and on the east coast. I love Scarborough and my 2ds love the park, it is still very nice and they love to feed the ducks and squirrels.Never heard of Oswald though I feel I'm missing out.

AuntGertrude · 12/01/2011 22:19

There's a better beach than Bamburgh not too far away but it's our secret holiday beach so I'm not saying where.

For Newcastle parking, park at Heworth Metro station and get the Metro straight to Eldon Square. Far less stress and cheaper.

ClaireDeLoon · 12/01/2011 22:22

We always park at Heworth too AuntG. Now tell me about your secret beach or I'll poke you.

Vallhala · 12/01/2011 22:25

Oooh, AuntGertrude, I have to concede that the Weardale Heritage Railway is lovely. I used to watch it from my window as it chugged up the Dale, steam billowing... it was a grand sight. :)

lemontop · 12/01/2011 22:28
Smile

now how do I persuade my husband to move up north

DurhamDurham · 12/01/2011 22:35

Maybe Oswald was just a story that was told to gullible tourists Smile

lemontop tell your dh that if he moves Up North my dh will be delighted to buy him a pint (he still thinks it's a novelty what with it being so cheap)Smile
