A friend of mine is a big football fan and pg and she is planning on calling him Luca after some footballer that she loves.

OP posts:

My friend named her son after someone on her favourite programme-Friends.
However she wasn't daft enough to make it too distinctive, so he's Matthew after Matthew Perry.
No one has a clue if she doesn't tell them.

LaWeaselMys · 11/01/2011 16:57

Scot - Kaylee isn't that bad is it? It makes more sense than Kayleigh phonetically at least!

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 17:02

Why not just get a pet?
I named my goldfish after my favourite SportspersonGrin

UnquietDad · 11/01/2011 17:03

I'm with the Suzanne Vega camp here! I wouldn't even have had a clue there was a footballer called Luca/Luka.

Milngavie · 11/01/2011 17:04

When my Mum was pg with me she and Dad decided to call me Colin Stein after a Rangers footballer of the time. Thankfully I was a girl!

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/01/2011 17:13

I was that far away from being called Regan after the possessed child in The Exorcist.

Compared to that, Luca is fine.

saffy85 · 11/01/2011 17:38

I know someone who knows someone who called her baby Tinchy Stryder. The mum was 15 when she had him which might explain naming her baby after her favourite rapstar... Hmm

Naming a baby after your favourite footballer/popstar/Big Brother contestant is never a good idea. It's a fickle world. Footballers bugger off to rival clubs, pop stars get forgotten about and Big Brother just sucks.

Mind you I nearly called DD Lucy which was partly down to my favourite book as a child being The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe Blush It's a classic though and I've read it since then....

my sons name is very rare and I only know of one other and he is a retired international footballer. I am not a fan of his, neither is my DH. We just really like the name. YABU.

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 17:57

Tinchy Stryder?
Noooooooooo, that's awful.

Someone I know, has just named his baby Rylan. His name is Ryan.Hmm

ThuggeryBuggerySkulduggery · 11/01/2011 18:00

I have had to namechange for this, but on another forum I used to frequent, one of the ladies called her baby boy Scholes.

I mean Confused and Shock and poor little thing!

If they admired Paul Scholes so much, why couldn't they have called him Paul?

Shakirasma · 11/01/2011 18:00

Beckham is not too bad when you consider he could have been called Shitu, lol

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 18:08

I know of a baby girl Senna.
It may well be after the racing driver, but all I think about is the laxative.

charliesmommy · 11/01/2011 18:10

Probably more illiterate parents who meant to call her Sienna.

saffy85 · 11/01/2011 18:11

wugglemump that's a shit name Grin

wuggglemump · 11/01/2011 18:21

See, that is a crap shit not very good joke, and the poor child has a lifetime of it.

Chil1234 · 11/01/2011 18:25

I thought all footballers were called Gary?

joydivisionovengloves · 11/01/2011 18:37

I would only name a kid after a footballer who had retired in case they buggered off to play for a team I dislike. And only them if I liked the name.

wishingforcrystalball · 11/01/2011 18:42

One of my kids has the same name as a famous football player - didn't realise until my best mate pointed it out!

SocialButterfly · 11/01/2011 18:49

We are lucky Confused as our surname begins with C so our first daughter has the initials AFC after Arsenal football club as DH is a massive fan!

Her middle name is Fallon after Kieran Fallon the horse racing jockey - again DH is a big fan

DD2 has the middle name Francesca - pronounced Fran - ces - ka which is the spanish pronounciation after Francesc Fabregas the Arsenal player.

Still I got to choose their first names so they shouldn't be too embarassed when they are older!

mankyscotslass · 11/01/2011 18:58

DH is named after a famous United player, one of the Busby Babes.

DH is now a massive City fan, much to his fathers disgust. Grin

outnumbered2to1 · 11/01/2011 19:00

I named my DS2 after a Rugby player cos ireland had won the 6 nations just before he was born.....

jenniferturkington · 11/01/2011 19:03

I used to call DS 'Cristiano' when he was still in the womb due to the strength of his kicks. Then after he was born (and not called Cristiano!) we met a mum at a baby group with a teeny baby Cristiano Grin . But her DH is from Madeira (where Cristiano Ronaldo is from) and it is just a really common name there!

yertile · 12/01/2011 11:58

My EX wanted to name DS after a footballer, I refused which was a good job as he left the club 6 months after DS was born.

trice · 12/01/2011 12:01

I have a cousin who named his baby Jenson and their surname is Button. Lovely people. Very cringy though. I thought they were having me on at first.
