To pick up a dead bird with a plastic bag!

My DH and I actually had a disagreement about this!

He wanted to pick it up with the dustpan and brush then put it in the plastic bag and throw the dustpan and brush away because "it only costs a quid and we have the baby to think of"

I went outside and put my hand inside the plastic bag, picked it up so it was inside the bag, my hand never touched the bird and then I washed my hands afterwards.

He thought that was awful and unhygienic and that a plastic bag will still let germs through and that the baby will now get ill!

Please tell me IANBU!

Ps. he has no problem with me sorting out the cat litter tray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Catsmamma · 11/01/2011 13:18

was going to ask if you have cats or dogs

he is being an idiot

Ragwort · 11/01/2011 13:18

No, you are being perfectly reasonable.

I use a spade to pick them up Grin and chuck them over the fence.

oh and if you want to freak him out, tell him I have two dead robins in my freezer, wrapped in kitchen roll, in a tupperware box waiting to be sent to a taxidermist friend

i took them from my evil murdering cats with my bare hands

PeeringIntoTheWintryVoid · 11/01/2011 13:22

Hmm Hmm at your DH - he is being very silly indeed. Grin

YANBU.

Bunbaker · 11/01/2011 13:23

What a plonker!!! Of course YANBU.

We used to have two cats and I was forever picking up dead animals (often decapitated) with a plastic bag and depositing it into the dustbin. Most dog owners I know pick up dog poo in this manner.

IAmTheCookieMonster · 11/01/2011 13:24

actually his mum picks up dog poo like this

YADNBU

I often have to dispose of live rats straight from the cat's mouth like this, then bash them on the head to put them out of their misery.

Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards Wink

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 11/01/2011 13:31

He's an idiot

I don't replace a dustpan and brush every time my dog does a shit

and I'd look a right twat wandering the countryside with 6 dustpans and brushes

AMumInScotland · 11/01/2011 13:34

Germs can't get through plastic bags, so the way you did it is very safe. And his way is silly as you can't go throwing things away all the time - that's why we have mountains of landfill!

Cyclebump · 11/01/2011 13:40

YANBU

AND he should be doing the cat litter tray.

charliesmommy · 11/01/2011 13:40

ffs... he needs to get his issues sorted out..

how will he cope when the baby is crawling around the garden eating woodlice..

(my stepdaughter did this, and is now very healthy 27 yr old, so I dont think it did her any harm...)

charliesmommy · 11/01/2011 13:41

I would point out to the numpty, that if a plastic bag is waterproof, how can a germ get through it...

theevildead2 · 11/01/2011 13:44

I'd say he was right, and then make him do the cat litter as well just to be sure!

Vallhala · 11/01/2011 13:45

YANBU. However I couldn't do it. Alive, fine, I'll pick up birds, mice, rats, snakes, spiders... but as soon as it's dead I have to holler for DD1 (the wannabe vet) as I just cannot stomach dead things).

plainjanesuperbrain · 11/01/2011 13:48

YANBU

Shock at some peoples absolute fear of germs and Shock at throwing away a dustpan and brush because it touched something which might have a germ on it! Isn't that what a dustpan is for- sweeping up muck? Unless you are planning to eat with the dustpan it would be fine to use again.

hogsback · 11/01/2011 14:05

Ermm, I would use my bare hands, wash them after and think nothing of it. That's what we do when out shooting - what's the difference?

BettyCash · 11/01/2011 14:45

Hogsback, city birds aren't the same as nice ol' country birds...

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 11/01/2011 14:47

I am a qualified nurse, with a specialist qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing - and hygiene is pretty basic to this, and you can tell your dh from me that the plastic bag will have stopped the germs getting onto your hands and that what you did was very sensible.

Kitsichick · 11/01/2011 14:54

yanbu but possibly you need more to keep you busy if this was seriously worrying you! And you had time to post aboout it!

hogsback · 11/01/2011 14:54

True, I forgot that city birds carry the dreaded pigeon plague, well known for it's ability to cross the species barrier Hmm

Kitsichick · 11/01/2011 15:23

Nice langauge Lauriefairy!

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 11/01/2011 15:46

thanks Grin

if you're being serious then you may wince when you hang round longer - 'shit' and 'twat' are the very thin end of the wedge round here. Wink
