Well you are expressing your oppinion here as well and I doubt it is because you care about me.... Confused

If I apply to go to a weight loss program, what kind of expectation should I have. Somebody to tell me: it is not your foult, your genes are wrong, your mother fed you wrong food, have a gastric band!!

emmie31 · 11/01/2011 13:27

I watched the programme, the only bit I objected to was the way they had to be weighed in cropped tops and lycra, surely t shirts and shorts would have been better, we can see how large they are without humiliating them.

FreudianSlipIntoMyLaptop · 11/01/2011 13:31

Hmm I'm not sure. I loved the series a couple of years ago, it was so much more in depth as it was on every day.

DH and I were NOT impressed that this time it was full of blatant plugs for their website and meal replacements Angry

But I don't think it was car crash telly, I've seen a lot worse. Those trainers are brilliant - on the last series you could tell how much they cared about the contestants and they really wanted them to lose weight.

Pussyfooting around would do them no favours. They may have started off seeming horrible (especially Angie she is terrifying!) but they are just doing what needs to be done.

Mumcentreplus · 11/01/2011 13:31

I'm just expressing an opinion...nothing to do with if I care personally about anyone on the thread Confused

I'm saying motivate not humiliate...by all means it is the persons fault now they are over weight, but I cant believe shouting/shaming someone and making them work out till they throw up is the answer..

Thingumy · 11/01/2011 13:41

I did snurk at the Subway sponsership

Fast food and Obesity? Nice one!

Lambzig · 11/01/2011 14:11

I agree about the lycra tops and the men topless is unnecessary humiliating. Its very sensationalised and I hate the shocked looks photographed. Also Davina's simpering sympathy was a bit much.

However, I do find that programme (and the US one) incredibly moving and inspiring. Was in tears for the people losing a stone and their complete look of delight. Outside of that hothouse environment, I expect its very hard to lose that much in a week, water or not.

It has encouraged me to go to a buggyfit class this morning and sign up to weightwatchers online to try to lose a stone myself (unfortunately expect it will take more than week!).

TheEggshellsareCracking · 11/01/2011 14:59

Oh, I actually love that programme Blush - I wish it was available on the NHS. Watching that programme with the Fattest Man in Britain the other day, I just thought "how in the hell did someone not get to him with some help before he could no longer move?!"

I'm a qualified fitness professional, but through overeating and not exercising enough since the birth of my youngest 2 years ago, I have put on 2 stone. God it has been horrible: cutting out all the foods I know are bad for me, and exercising back at the level that I know is required, has been soooo hard. But I'm fortunate, I'm very self-motivated. Many of the people I have met who say "oh, I need to lose weight" don't ACTUALLY put in the effort that's needed, they just kid themselves (one who claimed she was 'hardly eating anything' actually totalled 5,000 calories a day when she did a food diary!). And if you're unfit, sure it's going to hurt like hell when you get started. I think the female coach is a bit TOO bad-cop (and she lacks the charisma of Sue Sylvester!) but as someone has pointed out, no-one forced the participants into doing the programme, and the girls who got voted out were clearly gutted.

I shall be tuning in next week (and not eating at Subway or buying any meal replacements in the meantime).

BlueCollie · 11/01/2011 15:06

All of those contestants have watched the show before...they all know they will be humiliated and shouted at......they want the instructors to shout at them and kick their butts and push them hard or they wouldn't be on it!
It's better viewing than most of the other reality shit that's on the tele.

ILovedYou · 11/01/2011 15:11

I loved the female personal trainer!!

I was 28 stones at one point in my life and all she says is TRUE not bullying. I have faced up to my weight problem and my head space was everything she says when i started my journey. I was a fat, over eating, depressed because of my food addiction state.

I cannot tell a fat person to lose weight. it is the same as a car driver trying to persuade a person to learn to drive a car when they have absoloutely no interest in doing so. You either want to lose weight or you do not. It is hard work and takes soul searching and sacrifices. Such as removing people from your life that might be toxic.

Weight problems are varied and very complex. no amount of bullying or shouting would have made me do something about my weight. it has to come from within. A very loud click in your mnd. personally i had just had enough of being a fat slob. As sson a si started my journey i felt happy with myself after years and years of yo -yo dieting.

The contestants knew what they signed up for. They WANT to lose weight.

ILovedYou · 11/01/2011 15:15

I am still battling and try not to quell my emotions with food. As i said in my previous post. Reasons for being overweight are different for everybody and takes all manner of triggers to change. Some people never do and some people are content with the fact they cannot. Until.....

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 16:01

I assume everyone making comments saw the programme?

Mum... I think you analyed whats going on correctly.

Yes, expat, of course Davinas motivation is largely making money. (she wont leave TV
to do slimming privately)

To defend ITV over this is to create a more
callous society. As matey as a ferret in a rabbit hutch.

I realise some men and fewer women like to play the tough, non-feeling role...John Wayne did it better, but he was only acting.

If you put compassion on the ration; we will be back in the caves before Davina can shout " I am not a nun; and I needed the money."

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 16:07

Gloves....thank you for the information in your first line, (so its worse than I thought.)

Some experts think the whole of the slimming industry does very little about weight loss permamently..but there may be a social aspect to it.

jbloggs · 11/01/2011 16:20

i watched the show about britain's fattest man the other day. What I don't get is, if he can't get out of bed because he is too fat, then surely it ought to be simple for whoever is providing his meals, to just provide healthier/smaller meals instead?

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 16:24

Yes Jbloggs I saw the clips but missed the programme I am no expert but I assume he was beyond help by dieting. He had an illness not a weight problem me thinks

Regardless, it's on series link!

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 17:19

Luvlee. Great.

to cheer us all up, I watched the Childs
new chat show. It had a phonics teaching gadget which appeared to say the C word.
(Look it up its very funny.)

I am overweight and think a good kick up bum is a great idea

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 17:38

It depends what you mean. The TV was awful

OP posts:
Gemsy83 · 11/01/2011 17:46

They need people to be tough with them. The fattest man in the world did too. Before it got to the point he was unable to fit on a trolley in order to have surgery that would stop him eating himself to a very slow death.Saying oh its fine to be the way you are/just have a brisk walk/love yourself for who you are DOES NOT WORK for people of this size. The vast majority of overweight people who have lost significant amounts of weight cite a turning point- namely an utterly humiliating experience that made them realise they needed to lose weight.

Niceguy2 · 11/01/2011 18:09

I watched it and thought it was great.

I did lol at the Subway sponsorship though.

The female instructor was pushing them. Harsh perhaps but it's what they do!!! None of them will have gone into this show with their eyes closed. They will have watched previous shows before going on.

How are they going to lose weight if all she does is say "feeling tired? Have a rest then and here are some Biscuit

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 18:11

The Tv series was made for entertainment.
has little to do with long term slimming

Gemsy most people have enough humiliation without being used as pawns in a tv series.

Tough love is a corny american euphemism for something nasty. We copy the USA in too many things in my opinion

Davina is ok in her way..she just takes the money and runs. (or shouts more like)
cheers "Gabby"

OP posts:
mutznutz · 11/01/2011 18:12

They're not forced on to there and given the fact the prize money is £25,000...I'm sure they're all eager to be 'bullied' as you put it.

mykiddies · 11/01/2011 18:13

I have watched the biggest loser USA with Jillian Michaels and it's great. V motivational and these people's lives have been changed forever. The difference in them at the end is amazing. Not sure of the UK version though doesn't seem to come across the same. I agree with how on earth do these people go from not doing any exercise for years to doing this in a day but they do. BTW Subway is endorsed on the biggest loser USA. How you see it as fast food am baffled. There are many subs that are below 6g in fat that are low fat. Depends what's in the filling! You regularly seen contestants with subways for lunch on the show

GabbyLoggon · 11/01/2011 18:15

Niceguy?

If it was for entertainment, it should have been done by actors (they really need the work)

A thetre of cruelty society is a disgrace

OP posts:
Niceguy2 · 11/01/2011 18:18

It isn't bullying if the person has gone in with their eyes wide open, seen previous shows and has the option to quit.

I've seen the US shows and if they're anything to go by, the results will be amazing.

They are not going to lose weight using all huggy lovey dovey methods. Whatnthey need is a motivation, competition and a proper diet. Oh and a LOT of exercise!!!!
