To think that too many people rely on Tax Credits?

workhardplayhard · 09/01/2011 20:48

Reading many of the threads on Mumsnet it seems that a large proportion of contributors rely on Tax Credits to top up their incomes.

I don't know anyone who claims Tax Credits IRL but if I did I don't think it would change my opinion - I think people should be fully responsible for providing for their own offspring without any benefits.

I have stated on a previous thread that I DO believe that people should get some assistance if their circumstances change ( Redundancy/Ill Health) but only for a set period.

I don't think the government should pay for people to have multiple children that they can ill afford to provide for.

I would be interested to hear other views.

"I think the problem is exacerbated by nurseries who know that Tax Credits contribute to their fees, so hike them up to ridiculous levels"

sorry but nursery fees were always very high, certainly before tax credits were invented. Same with rents.

If they hadn't been ridiculously high in the first place, why would tax credits have been brought in? think about it

oggybags · 09/01/2011 21:14

usualsuspect - youre comment aimed at me - wasn't stereo typing my point was they're non essentials, many people clearly need them for actual supporting reasons.. just feel that some NOT ALL take advantage of it being a lifestyle option

eaglewings · 09/01/2011 21:14

I find it really sad that we as a society should pay for people to have children - after all the following list of people should all have their children adopted

Those who collect Rubbish from my house every week

Those who teach my children

Those who care for my parents when they are sick, health Care assistants etc

The Vicar who will care for me when I want my Grandmother buried

The people who run the swimming pool so my family can stay healthy

No let the lot of them be childless, after all they must all have Flat screen TV's and multiple holidays

BTW I am joking to show you how many people do amazing jobs, but we are unwilling to pay them over £40 K, some of them even over £20K

expatinscotland · 09/01/2011 21:14

However the government should be better is assuring that NRP's pay their share and I know sadly this is not always the case.

To make myself clearer I am referring more to the two parent families who chose that only one parent work but are happy to take money from the government

Oh, here we go!

A) A reference to another thread the OP was on in the first paragraph

B) The drip-feed, 'Oh, but I didn't mean this group of people!'

This is becoming a classic, folks!

Newgolddream · 09/01/2011 21:14

Oh to be rich and smug

expatinscotland · 09/01/2011 21:15

Sorry, missed quotation marks:
'However the government should be better is assuring that NRP's pay their share and I know sadly this is not always the case.

To make myself clearer I am referring more to the two parent families who chose that only one parent work but are happy to take money from the government'

oggybags · 09/01/2011 21:15

your not you're sorry!

eaglewings · 09/01/2011 21:16

Better idea - bring back the work house?

workhardplayhard · 09/01/2011 21:17

TheButterflyEffect- of course if someone is ill and cannot work ndefinately there should be assistance. I meant short term illness in my post, one of my colleagues had a heart attack recently and whilst he will be able to return to work it is likely he will have a number of months of work ( he is self employed so no sick pay).

I do wonder why the Government taxes people on low incomes and then gives them the money back in tax credits.

Serendippy · 09/01/2011 21:18

usualsuspect you make a valid point, get off the internet and give me back my money!

usualsuspect · 09/01/2011 21:18

Believe me if my dp was paid a decent wage it wouldn't be a lifestyle choice to get fucking tax credits ...its not hard to understand is it?

Ivette · 09/01/2011 21:18

without TC Id be starving to death, while earning 400 pcm :(

gordyslovesheep · 09/01/2011 21:18

no no work houses are too big to fit into the new improved 'big (but small) society' no - you should all open up your double garages to the poor - throw them dried bread and water while expecting them to clean your houses and mow your lawns - and alter the traps on your diamond shoes when they get too tight

it's the only way to go - workhouse lite!

WikiSpeaks · 09/01/2011 21:18

AHA - so OP you do know someone who claims!

frazzled74 · 09/01/2011 21:19

did the op not claim the married man/woman allowance before tax credits replaced it then? did her parents also turn it down?

bupcakesandcunting · 09/01/2011 21:19

"I haven't had a holiday in years ...we have one old car ...hell, we don't even have a flat screen tv ...but we do get a small amount of tax credits so shoot me"

You're doing it all wrong, usualsuspect. You need the Super TC that the rest of us get. I've had two holidays in Magaluf THIS YEAR and it's only January 9th. I've also bought a gold plated Wii with Tattoo Gran Prix III and I'm getting my 70" plasma delivered tomorrow.

Did I miss anything?

southeastastra · 09/01/2011 21:21

i have said this on loads of threads but when i started work twenty years ago, the wages weren't much differnet to today

workhardplayhard · 09/01/2011 21:21

I don't know if he claims WikiSpeaks but having paid tax for over 30 years I would hope that he would get some incapacity pay for a short time?

Long term sick - there does need to be better provisions. But tax credits do help families in this position.

Short term sick - need to benefit from a loss in wages and will probably get back to work and continue paying tax asap. FWIW DH was employed when he had his heart attack. We barely got SSP and no extra tax credits. You're talking bollocks OP.

expatinscotland · 09/01/2011 21:21

Yep, yep, the exclusions start! But I didn't mean ill people, people whose spouse walked off, etc etc etc.

Spot on ReindeerBollocks.

usualsuspect · 09/01/2011 21:22

I must have forgotton to tick the luxury lifestyle box on out tax credit forms bubcakes

maighdlin · 09/01/2011 21:23

OP you would love my sister she also thinks that you shouldn't have kids if you can't "afford" them. I feel a bit sad that there are people like that who think that just because someone doesn't earn a lot of money they do not deserve to have kids, but the world has became obsessed with making and having money i would rather have a smile from my daughter in my damp house than a million in the bank but thats just my opinion.
