Hi all mumsnets

Just listened to Radio 4 debate re Eastender sstory line. It praised mumsnet for bringing attention to a storyline.

I saw a film last year called "Eden Lake". In it a bunch of teanagers tortured to death a young married couple, slashed their mouthes with a stanly knife tied them up with barbed wire, burned a small asian boy to death and laughed about it and recorded all on their mobile phones. I was so disturbed that I contacted my local MP. I complained that the film content should never be considered entertainment in a civilised society. He asked the film classification board to re check the film. The matter went no further. The board is however, I believe, funded by film makers!
The matter went no further. After writing to the papers, and TV journalist all to no avail, I have had to give up as nobody appears to agree with my point of view. My point is that If this film is considered good entertainment by our main stream cinemas, then I am not surprised that some youngsters do the things that they do. Not long after this film was released there was a story in the news where two small boys tried to torture two other small boys to death, one was left for dead in a ditch. Very similar to the film!! Please would you mumsnetters review, and if you feel motivated do what you do best

Many thanks to you all. You probably do need to watch the film to fully understand my point, but I warn you it is very unpleasant.

I remember watching this film. TBH I didn't find it any worse than any other horror films ...if you want bad watch SAW or HOSTEL.
I don't think it was meant to be your average slasher film though .I think it was trying to make a valid, but sad, point about the gang culture that our kids find themselves embroiled in these days.
The most disturbig part of the film for me was the reaction of the adults, not the kids, at the end of the film.
You can't ban a film just because you find it personally offensive (otherwise I would have had BRATZ The movie gone!)

accidentwaitingtohappen · 09/01/2011 21:49

Also. there was a film called 'THEM' that ran in a similar vein. You can't ban them all.

It still is a film that shows amongst other things a child burning another child alive.

I would expect that mumsnet is a good demographic representation of mums in the uk.

What I have read so far in the replies leads me to believe that over 90% of the mums in the uk find the image of one child burning to death another child, entertaining!

What does that say about mums in the UK?

Is the image of a child burning another child to death entertaining to mums in the UK, yes or no?

Generally speaking banning things like films, books, etc is not a good idea, but by all means feel free to express your dislike

These kind of films are generally not shown on TV, and certainly not pre watershed.
Therefore you cannot compare these films with soaps for example.

sfxmum · 09/01/2011 22:15

still Shock at the idea that I am somehow representative of 'mums in the UK' and am somehow 'colder and core callous' than my parents generation

nevermind, as you were

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/01/2011 22:15

Why on earth did you go to such a film if you are not a fan of slash/gore horror?

Your OP reminds me of the furore in my youth about Video Nasties. And makes me laugh. As do the movies themselves.

porcamiseria · 09/01/2011 22:25

are we getting the pitchforks?

wish list of things to disappear:
pretty much all reality telly
starting with talent shows
X Facto etc

perfect solution
step away from the telly - do not watch

accidentwaitingtohappen · 09/01/2011 22:36

OP, yes you are right in thinking that MN members would NOT find watching kids burn other kids entertaining, but you don't HAVE to watch this film, and neither do other mums.

Basically if you like horror flicks, then so what? That does not make you a wacko.
If you DON'T like horror films, don't watch them.
And ,no, I did not find EDEN Lake 'entertaining', but I did find it insightful.

accidentwaitingtohappen · 09/01/2011 22:38

Oh, and if we are on the the list of things to get rid of, then that all pervasive shocker corrie should be the first to go!

richrichrich · 09/01/2011 22:56

It's just a bit sad that mums in the uk find images of kids torturing other kids entertaining. That's my point

When I was at school, We might have had a fight in the playground, a bloody nose or even a broken arm at the worst. Now kids go into school and have knife fights or shoot their class mates or teachers.

when and why did things change? the fact that over 60 out of 64 parents who replied to this thread think that seeing images of a child burning to death another child is entertaining, may have something to do with that.

There must be a reason for the change in the violent behaviour of children!
