To still want to carry dd?

Literally. In a sling? She's getting SO heavy. I will be able to do maybe another month in the Baby Bjorn I reckon (she's 7mo now) but what then? Any ideas?

I find buggies a bit of a faff if I'm honest but is there another way?

one of these

I carried dd til she was two and a half in one of these, and after that I sometimes used a hippychick for when she wanted to walk but occasionally needed picking up.

Unrulysun · 07/01/2011 17:04

Thanks Bogeyface - is that a wrap around sling type thing? I had a Kari Me when dd was born and it killed my back. I quite like the structure of the Bjorn but it's just not going to be big enough.

I still carry ds (when hes not walking) and hes 21 months. I use a ring sling for short journeys

Indith · 07/01/2011 17:07

If you like the structure of the bjorn then perhaps you might like a www.connectababycarrier.com/. They are cloth slings but they have buckles instead of tying the straps.

Bogeyface · 07/01/2011 17:08

Its a ring sling, and I generally used the hip carry once she was 6 months or so.

here are some instructions

choceyes · 07/01/2011 17:08

I use a Connecta for my 5 month old DD. It can take babies up to 15kg apparently.

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 07/01/2011 17:08

indith has it right. I can still carry my large 21 month old son very comfortably in the connecta.

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 07/01/2011 17:09

On my back that is

lifeistooshort · 07/01/2011 17:13

I have a catbird picolo and it is the best sling I ever had! Very easy to use and my DS weighs nothing in it. Would thoroughly recommend it

kenobi · 07/01/2011 17:16

Another hippy chick fan over here < waves > slings didn't work from me as I always ended up getting off centre and achey. With the hippychick you just do it up really tight and it takes the weight. www.hippychick.com/index.cfm/children/Products.List/category_id/65/subject/hippychick_hipseat

They are brilliant though they look like bumbags.

Unrulysun · 07/01/2011 17:18

Lots of good ideas (and so far no-one saying JFGI :) )

will check out all suggestions - thanks. :)

i use a mei tai, on the side, as I carry him on my hips most of the time with this or not, ds is now 13 months, as long as it is wrapped properly it fits nice and snugly and secure and he loves the freedom to sit on my hip and hang on like a koala without me holding him in place.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 07/01/2011 17:21

I can still carry my rather heavy six year old in a wrap when needs mustGrin.

get a proper one, baby bjorns are shite!

ERGO, CONNECTA, APLX all good semi-structured carriers.
Babyhawk is a great versatile mei tai. Most versatile of all is a woven wrap.
I can carry my heavy 3.5 year old in any of those. Not that I make a habit of it! Grin

SiameseSnowCat · 07/01/2011 17:26

I swapped from my baby bjorn to an ergo at 7 months because DD was just too heavy. The ergo is amazing, particularly on your back - can't feel her really!

Unrulysun · 07/01/2011 17:28

Interested to know what makes babybjorn shite? I've found mine great for up to this age but would love to find something better.

I think it's because of the way the baby sits in a baby bjorn.

They are sometimes referred to as "crotch danglers"

Not by me I add.

BuzzLightBeer · 07/01/2011 17:46

Crotch dangling is thought to be bad, but mainly for the wearer, they just aren't designed to be comfortable for use. Once you've tried one of the less well known ones you get why people don't rate the BB, even if you like it well enough now.

Unrulysun · 07/01/2011 18:15

Damn my ignorant dangly crotch Grin

I carried my 98th centile DD in a toddler patapum until she was well over 2.5.

then she started walking everywhere Smile

SacharissaCripslock · 07/01/2011 18:19

I made a mei tai. Was cheap but so comfy to wear - could carry my DS3 until he was 2.5 in it (and I'm disabled so that's saying something!).

Unrulysun · 07/01/2011 18:19

Oh the things Mumsnet knows... :)

ShowOfHands · 07/01/2011 18:28

DD was in an ergo or a ring sling once she got bigger. And she was an off the charts child (25lbs at 25 weeks). I carried her until well over 2.

FrostyTheCrunchyFrog · 07/01/2011 18:49

I had DS1 in a Mei Tai this summer, aged 4.11, have to say, I think I got shorter as the day went on, but it was completely doable! DS2 is just 2 and still using MT, Ring sling, occasional woven wrap (more support than a stretchy one - if a Kari Me hurt your back, it might have been slipping loose, they take a while to get used to.)
