To think my moher in law does not know how to do the washing up...

Ok, i dont know if it's only her or not. A friend of mine told me that this is quite common in uk but, to me, it makes me sick. (i am not British)

My MIL does not rinse the plates, glasses or saucepans under running water but she puts them to drain covered in foam. Very often these are still greasy (also because she tends to wash the glasses as last thing when the water is already dirty) and then she dries them with a cloth instead of letting them dry in the air.

I repeat a friend of mine told me this is the british way (i am not british) but i dont believe her because i have seen other friends that instead rinse and dont dry with cloth.
I dont want to offend anyone, but could u tell me if this is very common? Thanks

Some people rinse some don't, I don't. I put my washing up in a bowl of soapy water, wash up and leave them to drain as it is more hygienic than wiping.

pooka · 05/01/2011 21:12

I use a dishwasher ;)

Though if staying somewhere without Shock I fill sink with hot soapy water. Clean things. Rinse with cold water. Then dry with a clean tea towel.

I don't like leaving things to drain next to the sink. Looks messy. Prefer to dry and then put away.

usualsuspect · 05/01/2011 21:13

Different people do things different ways, can't say that washing up differently to me would make me sick though

Kentmummy · 05/01/2011 21:13

I don't mean to be rude, but why do you care? I honestly couldn't give a monkeys how someone else washes up.. Especially if it means I'm not doing it!

PaisleyLeaf · 05/01/2011 21:14

I don't have space beside my bowl for rinsing (chances are you don't use a washing up bowl - we had a thread about the British and their washing up bowls once).

InspirationalBreadbin · 05/01/2011 21:14

I use a dishwasher! Grin

You would love my Dad though OP. He puts water in the bowl that is too hot to put hs hands in, dips the items in (so leaving part of it unwashed, smears the item with a cloth, then puts it onto the draning rack to be dried with a tea towel. About half of the items left on the draining rack still have food on them and then he growls at whoever has the nerve to point it out!

usualsuspect · 05/01/2011 21:15

She cares because its a good chance to slag off the MIL

stickersarecurrency · 05/01/2011 21:15

Loads of people (my MIL included!) do this. I can't abide it - scalding hot, soapy water, several fresh basins if required, a hot rinse and then air dry is to only way to wash dishes!

girlynut · 05/01/2011 21:15

Same as fabbychic. No rinsing here.

Always do glasses first but leave the whole lot to drain rather than dry up with a tea towel, as I have neither the time nor inclination for extra work! Wink

FabbyChic · 05/01/2011 21:15

Loving the phrase about the monkeys! Use it all the time.

I wash up the way my mother did, my sister does it the same, as does a hell of a lot of other people I know.

Lamorna · 05/01/2011 21:15

Quite common, everyone has their own way. Drying on a towel is very unhygienic so it is better to drain. I love my dishwasher!

curlymama · 05/01/2011 21:15

It is fairly common, but that doesn't stop it being revolting. I hate it when I see people do this, as I did when a group of my friends shared a caravan for a weekend last year.

Stuff needs to be rinsed! In hot water!

SoupDragon · 05/01/2011 21:15

I would have thought most British people use a dishwasher.

PaisleyLeaf · 05/01/2011 21:17

curly surely you're not that fussed when camping?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2011 21:17

When I was growing up we washed glasses first, them plates, saucepans etc. They were not rinsed and were dried by tea towel then put away. Guess what we were never ill

The world has gone germphobic nowadays.

FabbyChic · 05/01/2011 21:19

Soup

I do it the same was as yours, sometimes I wipe up sometimes not. But always glasses first, then plates and cutlery then saucepans and dirtier stuff.

Sometimes changing the water.

charliesmommy · 05/01/2011 21:19

I wash glasses first, then plates, then anything really greasy...

If there is lot of soapy suds on them then I might pour a mug of the water over them to rinse that off, but other than that, thats it.

Thats the way my mum did it for nearly 80 years and none us got to any harm.

I do have a dishwasher, but its as quick and easy to wash stuff by hand really.

onepieceoflollipop · 05/01/2011 21:20

"drying on a towel is very unhygienic" - well this depends really imo. If the person using the towel has clean hands, and the towel has been well laundered on a hot wash and possibly tumble dried (and towel is changed daily/regularly and not used for any other purpose) then I fail to see how it is unhygienic)

We have a dishwasher, but if I do handwash, I use very hot. soapy water. Sometimes rinse under hot tap, but not if there is very little foam/suds. I like to dry/polish glasses and cutlery, plus other items if I can be bothered.

I have seen stuff left to drain semi permanently, and I expect that is unhygienic as well.

stleger · 05/01/2011 21:20

We had a discussion about this with some English friends once (we are Irish). We were amazed at the non-rinsing behaviour Grin. Now we have a dishwasher.(I say we, I am including dh, but his position is more theoretical than active involvement).

onepieceoflollipop · 05/01/2011 21:21

Yes Fabby and Soup,

Good point re changing the water.

Meglet · 05/01/2011 21:21

eee, not rinsing is gross. The dirt is in the bubbles.

I don't wash up anyway, I have a dishwasher.

LaWeaselMys · 05/01/2011 21:21

Why do you need to rinse? It's just a waste of water.

Although I don't bother with drying with tea towels unless there is so much it won't fit on the rack.

LaWeaselMys · 05/01/2011 21:21

The dirt is not in the bubbles. The bubbles are SOAP they are sterile!!

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 05/01/2011 21:22

My DH does not know how to wash up which I'm sure is intentional! Hmm He'll pile the wet dishes in an impossible manner that if you sneezed, they'd all come tumbling down. Also, he never rinses in clean water, puts cups and glasses straight on to the draining board rather than the draining rack (IYKWIM) so a gallon of foisty water comes gushing out when you pick them up. The number of times I've had to re-wash greasy tins etc is countless! We were lucky enough to have a dihwasher in our previous house - he couldn't load that properly either.!!! Angry

charliesmommy · 05/01/2011 21:22

By "unhygienic", for those that think it is, well, what sort of thing are you scared of catching off a plate with a bit of soap on it?
