To put my children in socks that do not match?

Am I the only mother who finds that one sock of each pair gets lost all the time? as a result my children are often in non matching socks. My parents have said I should be careful as the school may notice and think im neglecting them.

Thats complete crap right?

better be. my ds actively chooses odd socks and i have bigger battles to fight so i leave him too it.

Catsmamma · 05/01/2011 11:18

of course

no one ever has a pair of socks on here, we have a mahoooooosive basket that al the socks go in and it's lucky dip

ds1 (18) was well chuffed the other day to have two "tuesday" socks on...never mind they were from different sets

and it was thursday 3)

nickschick · 05/01/2011 11:19

My fab mate who is so active in her dcs life taking them on trips and extra curricular stuff in fact devoted to them has 'odd sock days' most days....she says paired sock wearers are anal.

NorwegianMoon · 05/01/2011 11:21

well thats a sigh of relief, I cant remember the last time I had socks that matched.

My dh is anal he has to have at least 15 pairs of socks in his drawer he thinks hes a farkin centipede.

ChessyEvans · 05/01/2011 12:06

I can't believe a school would consider that neglect?! Assuming the children are otherwise well washed, dressed etc! Practically though, why not just resort to buying lots of plain black (or white) socks for school so that they all match? Or is that a bit boring?!

Doigthebountyeater · 05/01/2011 12:10

Guilty as charged m'lud. DS2 is 15 months and is constantly flinging his socks out of the pram so has about 20 socks but no matching ones. I refuse to buy more socks until he stops this (or gets shoes)so in the meantime it's odd socks everyday. Odd socks used to be a fashion choice in my teenage years - one luminous yellow and one luminous pink was very stylish in our neck of the woods.

tutu100 · 05/01/2011 12:13

My DM also seems to think that people will see odd sock as a sign that the dc's are not cared for properly especially as most people know I have suffered with PND for the last 2 years.

Keeping the house clean, getting out etc are all such a struggle I think I would give up if ds2 had to have matching socks for us to go out. If they are clean and the right size then they are ok.

sheepgomeep · 05/01/2011 12:16

Hlaf the children in our school go to school with odd socks (including my lot)

shinyshoes · 05/01/2011 12:17

Same here with my DS1 LovelyJudy. I believe it's a fashion thing

nickelbabyjesus · 05/01/2011 12:19

YANBU.

only adults should worry about what socks match (and only when it matters from a fashion POV)

Buy a gazillion pairs of the exactly same socks.
Throw away any socks that don't match socks as above

All socks match by default - job done.

YetiOnAJetty · 05/01/2011 12:21

Buy those big packs of school socks in black. Problem solved.

twirlymum · 05/01/2011 12:25

DD (10) wears odd socks as some kind of fashion statement Hmm
DS (3) has some great Gruffalo socks that are all odd. You buy a pair, but they are not the same. He has three sets, so six odd socks. He loves them, and I can't wash them quick enough!

potplant · 05/01/2011 12:28

There is a market for deliberately odd socks?

I've just thrown out a bag full of odd socks. Damn I could have made a killing on them.

JamieLeeCurtis · 05/01/2011 12:28

yy - my son is 10 too ....

mutznutz · 05/01/2011 12:32

This has just reminded me of when my son was about 4yrs old and in reception class. He was so independent and always insisted on dressing himself...which he did well.

He came home one day, took his shoes off and I spotted these weird stripey socks on his feet I'd never laid eyes on before. When I questioned him about it, he casually said "Oh yeah, I forgot to put my socks on this morning so the teacher sent me to the office for a spare pair"

I nearly died of embarrassement! Grin

We pair our socks as they come out the tumble dryer so all of our socks are paired shock

Grrrrrrrr how very organised of you Envy....

Tramadol · 05/01/2011 14:22

Dc2 wouldnt dream of wearing matching socks - been wearing odd ones for years.

donkeyderby · 05/01/2011 14:39

DS2 insists on wearing odd socks. At first I thought he was just being more weird than usual, then one of the mums told me it was a fashion. I worried the school thought I might be a neglectful parent too, especially as he insists on sporting a fringe that entirely covers his eyes and likes to look like a tramp

Bingtata · 05/01/2011 14:46

I am anal. I couldn't bear odd socks because I hadn't paired them! If DD chose to wear mismatched socks for fashion then that would be ok, but not because I couldn't be bothered to pair them! I wouldn't consider it neglect though, just abit lazy by my own standards.

wayoftheworld · 05/01/2011 14:49

I could never do on myself or my kids, but I do find it very cute on other kids ( a bit strange on grown ups Hmm)

starfishmummy · 05/01/2011 14:52

I have a dreadful confession to make. DS has a set of socks with days of the week on the sole.
Sometimes he wears the wrong day.

Hides in shame
