To put my children in socks that do not match?

Am I the only mother who finds that one sock of each pair gets lost all the time? as a result my children are often in non matching socks. My parents have said I should be careful as the school may notice and think im neglecting them.

Thats complete crap right?

I pair up socks - my ds has a real issue over socks - especially the seam part - anyone know where you can get no seam socks???

My dh will undo my pairing, if there are black socks paired with same pattern but slightly different shade of black from one being washed more than another - that's too anal for words.

MaryMungo · 05/01/2011 14:54

I buy all matching socks. Men's black socks for DH, me and DS1, and white cable socks for DDs, for work and school wear. Then DH and I wear the same size white crew socks for weekends, and the kids share white crew socks up and down. I just try to make sure the ankle is vaguely near where it ought to be.

But then, I'm a slattern Grin

LadyoftheHouseofLove · 05/01/2011 15:01

My two are often in odd socks (as am I) Blush

I would love to know where all these missing socks go!

drfayray · 05/01/2011 15:01

DS15 wears odd socks on purpose. DD12 does as well. I do not wear socks (in Birkenstocks or bare feet most of the time) and DH wears black socks for work.

Umm I hardly think odd sock wearing is neglect!

missismonky · 05/01/2011 15:04

I am horribly lazy disorganised person but I don't think I have ever given either of my DCs odd socks to wear. My, now grown up, DS wears them regularly though, hmm. Hmm

Nothing wrong with it at all, must just be one of the few things I have a personal irrational pickiness about.

mollie1968 · 05/01/2011 15:05

DP,DD and DS all look for odd socks to wear on purpose and for xmas DS rec'd present of three sock to make odd pairs........school socks tend to be all the same white with lace and DD makes up the pairs as she goes along....no sure what that says about me as a mother...

rasta · 05/01/2011 15:09

Matching socks simply do not exist in this house!

Last Summer DD1 went to school with odd socks on.

She was wearing a skirt Blush

missismonky · 05/01/2011 15:11

wishingforcrystalball sock shop do seamless kids socks, you can get them online.

CardyMow · 05/01/2011 17:10

I have 3 dc, and I don't find it too much trouble making sure that their socks match. I don't even have a problem knowing which pattern socks are DS1's and which pattern are DS2's, desite them being in the same sock size. When socks are taken off, they are put (by the dc) in a plastic wastepaper basket in front of the washing machine, the dc put them together in a ball in there (from about the age of 3yo), so they go in the machine in pairs, get hung on the airer in pairs, and put in their drawers in pairs. How is that difficult? Confused

mustdash · 05/01/2011 17:13

My DCs think that wearing odd socks is our special family thing, and are very proud of it. DD2 particularly likes mixing trainer socks and long socks Hmm but it is so much more fun than being matchy matchy. Grin

Bogeyface · 05/01/2011 17:15

I put the girls in tights over the winter if poss, even under trousers so no problem but apart from that I think the only person who gets paired socks is DH and thats only because he washes them himself as I refuse to touch them!

If you have socks that are vaguely the right size and clean then that'll do as far as I am concerned. But then I trained at the "Ah fuck it, that'll do" school of housework!

mumeeee · 05/01/2011 17:15

YANBU. Apparently odd socks are all the fashion or so says my 18 year old DD

MrsMellowDrummer · 05/01/2011 17:16

I do what Potplant does.

BodleianBabe · 05/01/2011 17:46

My DCs were about 4 or 5 before the they even realised socks came in pairs!!! The only socks they tend to get a pair of are the school ones.

I never bother either. I've got much more important things to worry about!!!Wink

BodleianBabe · 05/01/2011 17:49

Just read the OP again!!

On what planet could odd socks ever be described as 'neglect'??? Shock

dirnty · 05/01/2011 17:50

For the kids I always buy two sets of the same socks in the shop as I'd never find a pair otherwise Grin

I wear odd ones from time to time but they're mostly hidden away in my Rocket Dogs so only I know Wink

haha, i didnt know you could get matching socks...

ddubsgirl · 05/01/2011 18:04

most days mine dont have matching socks!i buy them all new ones and i think the machine eats them as they go in together but dont come out that way lol!

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/01/2011 18:09

Me, DP and DD all have the same sized feet, so I just buy 8000 pairs of black socks a year and we all use them.

However dd has a load of patterned socks - theer isn't a pair amongsth them.

I have NO idea where they go.

And I don't give a shit.

bronze · 05/01/2011 18:12

I tend to wear matached but only because dh and I wear the same black socks and we have lots and lots the same
ds1 has grey socks and ds2 black
dds are girly and a nightmare and ds3 gets stuck in whatever

I do remember a poste ron here was told it was an indicator of neglect. What tosh

DilysPrice · 05/01/2011 18:26

I blame the shops which insist on selling bundles of socks all slightly different in order to shame us into buying more when one gets lost / eaten. Next do nice cheap sets of identical school socks though, and I get the DC's from there (smug emoticOn as have just cleared out DDs sock drawer of all the undersized socks and pants and put them into charity shop rag bag).
Actually I think the real sign of neglect is socks that don't fit any more - all too easy to miss, and can actually hurt them, unlike mismatched pair. Fortunately for all us slightly sub-par mums the schools can't actually check that.

Guitargirl · 05/01/2011 18:32

I think it's an older person thing. My Mum and MIL both comment if the DCs are wearing odd socks, and my Mum will if I am (frequently). It really seems to bother them for some reason I am unable to fathom. The amount of stuff I have to do/remember mismatched socks are the least of my worries!

goodmanners · 05/01/2011 18:37

ds am happy in odd socks and dd on a weekend but on a school day dd has mathcing, ds suits himself.

Starbuck999 · 05/01/2011 18:37

I never pair socks...! For either myself or dd. They all go into our sock drawers loose and if we need a pair we hunt for a matching set or most days we just wear odd ones.

Perhaps I am neglectful of myself and dd Grin
