to think that there are very few jobs which fit in with young children in school?

Especially considering how often they get ill (my dc started in September and has been off ill for 20 days with 2 tummy bugs, 3 double ear infections and now tonsillitis and ear infection) plus then there are all the school holidays.

Both dh and I don't want to leave our dc in before and after school childcare or childcare during the Holidays as we believe that we should look after our own child. So I would like to know what jobs could you do between 9.30 and 15.00 Monday to Friday except term time and during illness?

I have contacted supermarkets: they were not interested re how to deal with flexibility in case of illness (dh cannot take time off in these circumstances)(i.e.unpaid leave I suggested, but that was not possible). Also contacted local businesses but they thought the hours were too restricted and that school holidays would be a problem.

Is there anybody who has a job during term time with some flexibility in case of children being ill? What do you do and how did you get it?

Thanks a lot.

Lucky OP who does not need expensive holidays etc. Assume that their children will also not need university fees?

ShowOfHands · 04/01/2011 20:59

What can I do? I'm really good at puzzles, quite good at tidying up lego and sylvanians and know a lot of useless trivia.

I can probably work 10am until 10.15am and I want perks like tea and gossip.

Is there a job out there for me?

TandB · 04/01/2011 21:00

[stops feigning unconsciousness and leaps up shouting 'hiiiiiiiya as she kung-fu chops Lequeen]

whatsleep · 04/01/2011 21:00

have you tried macdonnalds, i worked there when I was at college 20 Shockyears ago. they treat their staff well and I am assuming they are still pretty flexible. they employ lots of uni students who often go home during holidays. I am actually looking to get a job with them to work evenings! I know they only pay minimum wage but if you have looked at supermarket jobs I assume they pay the same?

CommanderDrool · 04/01/2011 21:00

How about childminding?

Usbourne books?

Book keeping?

I'm a SAHM but have to say you sound a bit sanctimonious op.

I am desperate to return to work as we need the money and i need to get out there in the real world again.

TandB · 04/01/2011 21:02

ShowofHands - I will employ you. I will dump my child on you for 15 minutes a day if that is OK?

Sequins · 04/01/2011 21:03

I mean, all those days off school "sick" OP is enabling = not very good exam results, anyway, so that's a saving.

pink4ever · 04/01/2011 21:03

Litchick-I am not supporting the op in anything. I was merely offering an answer to her post. Whether or not she was trying to be deliberately inflammotory, she deserved to have my truthful answer(ie its not that easy to get these kind of flexible jobs, especially in current climate). Am not entering into any further sahm v wohm crap on this thread(will leave that to the usual susupects and their sycophantic followers).

montysorry · 04/01/2011 21:03

Oh bloody hell! This can't be real, surely?

I teach. Apart from the obvious term time advantage, teaching is one of the least family friendly jobs I know. I'd love to see my kids' sports day. Sad

I think you should just SAH, bake and get fat whilst wrapping yourself in that blanket of smugness.

milkysmum · 04/01/2011 21:03

I work full time as a community nurse to pay to put roof over our head. I'd love to be able to spend more time with my dd but she needs shelter, food and lots of love all which I can provide even if I have to put her in child care to do so. I wouldn't look for a job with the opening line of 'what if my child is ill etc?' just deal with that as it occurs. On a more helpful note 'bank/ casual' care work is a good way of working what ever hours, when ever suits you?

Gemsy83 · 04/01/2011 21:05

Hmm at working in a bar/driving jobs being the domain of men! WTF this gets better and better

kenobi · 04/01/2011 21:05

AIBU to be disappointed when an OP doesn't come back to her thread?

JOF - where are youuu?
Did you mean to be inflammatory or was it just bad wording (she says, charitably).

JarethTheGoblinKing · 04/01/2011 21:05

ShowOfHands - sounds like you'd be perfect for us! Grin

CommanderDrool · 04/01/2011 21:06

Many people I know are self employed and manage school pickup etc with a bit of juggling. It ain't easy though.

Do you have any skills which you could use for self employment?

Sequins · 04/01/2011 21:06

You could fit in journalism for the Daily Fail, probably.

Gemsy83 · 04/01/2011 21:06

Pink you seem to be doing a perfectly good job of that to be fair...

ninah · 04/01/2011 21:07

I work in a school and really want to teach, but the dc illness thing scares me a bit as I have no family backup
to date they have been resoundingly healthy but it scares me I could not compete on this level

TandB · 04/01/2011 21:07

Who are the usual suspects and who are the sycophants? Can we choose?

I guess given the bunfight over who gets to have Violethill as her hero we better go with Violet as a usual suspect and Lequeen and I as sycophants.

But what if Usualsuspect shows up? And wants to be a sycophant? That will be confusing. [worries]

Maybe op is feeling a bit upset at the response.

TandB · 04/01/2011 21:09

[wails loudly that Lequeen is meeeeean, then scuttles behind Violethill to play for sympathy]

Cheffess · 04/01/2011 21:10

You do what the rest of us do.....learn to juggle...fast.

There are many part time jobs out there, you just got to keep looking.

I am a chef and gave up work when my daughter was born as chefs hours are a nightmare when you have kids. I managed to get a job in a nursery cooking for all the children, my daughter came to work with me, and as part of my employment I got reduced rate childcare, and still do now when my 7yo is on holiday from school.
I do this Mon to Fri 9.15 - 12.45.
I freelance to restaurants/gastro pubs in the evenings when my mother can have my daughter.

If you want to work, you will find a way to make it work.

But you got to work on your attitude, no employer is going to employ someone so obviously looking for reasons not to.

ShowOfHands · 04/01/2011 21:11

I'm on LeQueen's side. Not just in this but in her final quest for world domination. I've fashioned a placard and am cheering from the sidelines.

I think I can do 15 minutes in the afternoon as well if anybody has half an hour in which they wish to dump their child with a stranger.

CommanderDrool · 04/01/2011 21:13

Just saying

hohohohobnobsaremyfave · 04/01/2011 21:13

can I be on the sycophants side pleeease? pleeeasee?
