AIBU to let DS1 name our new cat "Fluffer"?

Should I try to gently persuade him that Fluffy is a better bet (he's 3.10 and pretty set on this) or face 10+ years of the neighbours thinking I'm shooting a porn film every time I call out into the garden?

Love it! Grin

tribpot · 03/01/2011 20:37

I'm afraid I think you're stuck with Fluffer. My ds (5) has been adamant for many months that our cat would be called Harry Potter, and so she is, despite being female. You can always shout FLUFF er if need be?

BibiBlocksberg · 03/01/2011 20:38

Grin Grin - fabulous!!!

Here kitty kitty accompanied by the rattling of the treat box will have to suffice to call the cat home in your case :)

BertieBottlesOfMulledWine · 03/01/2011 20:38

Why don't you just call him fluffy but let DS call him fluffer as a "nickname"?

I remember insisting that we call my friend Maria, Marie as a nickname when I first found out about nicknames, despite the fact it's actually a completely separate name and no shorter.

Then again I have a cat called Bernard and my 2 year old calls him "Burden"

purplepidjbauble · 03/01/2011 20:40

Fluffer Grin

Could you not suggest that the cat might want a more dignified name? Henry, perhaps? Or Mathilda?

borderslass · 03/01/2011 20:41

When DD2 then 8 got her cats she insisted on calling them bobby and ginger nowt wrong with that except she'd stand shouting ginger, bobby on back doorstep DD1 then 12 thought it hilarious dirty bugger.

stleger · 03/01/2011 20:42

Our neighbour's cat was called Fluffy; ddog is Sad because Fluffy has moved away. I'm sure the cat will be happy to ignore either version.

SecretNutellaFix · 03/01/2011 20:43

Lol. DH's grandparents had a fat ginger fellow called Poofter. That would be so much worse.

Grin at fluffer.

I'd call it Fluffy and let DS call it Fluffer if he wants to.

DD1 wanted to name the hamster Niamh after a school friend Hmm finally got her to agree to Jessie after the toy story character. Kitten is called Bella after I vetoed Cookie, Bolt and Claws amongst others!

MegBusset · 03/01/2011 20:50

I see fluffer, and raise you-

A yellow lab called 'crumpet'.

I think my parents lived to regret that one.

tribpot · 03/01/2011 21:18

My ds has frequently stated that if we had 3 cats (which we are not ) they would be called:

  • Harry Potter
  • Indiana Jones
  • Tiberius

Tiberius is my friend's tortoise's name, but no doubt has some geek Star Trek reference going on.

I do feel sorry for Batman and the cast of Star Wars for having failed to make sufficient impact via their respective Lego Wii games. I think in Batman's case it's because he doesn't have a proper name, and in Star Wars' case because there are too many characters.

pointydog · 03/01/2011 21:20

Fluffer is a far better name than fluffy.

I think children should always name pets.

LadyBubbaAndBump · 03/01/2011 21:27

:o at calling out Fluffer at the top of your voice. Make sure your DH/DP also calls out Pussy Pussy at the top of his voice just to make sure your neighbours are in no doubt about your extra-curricular activities!! :o

Fluffer. Giggle. I guess you could shorten it to Fluff!

whoodoo · 03/01/2011 21:36

Love it- ds will have a ready made porn name when he's older

narkypuffin · 03/01/2011 21:38

Yes to Fluffer. And in time you can have a Viagra as a replacement.

Chatelaine · 03/01/2011 21:39

Regards to Fluffer. Don't get the porn bit. May you have many happy years together. Your ds must be as proud as punch to have his very own cat. Our dcs each named our two cats. Very special.

HarkTheTragicalyHipHeraldAngel · 03/01/2011 21:40

Fluffer...love it! Grin

KurriKurri · 03/01/2011 21:43

Fluffer is a great name Grin and you can tell him it's Fluffy all you like, but he'll always introduce the cat as Fluffer.

I think you have to accept that if you let children name pets, you will get something "different" (our Guinea pigs were Cosy and 007)
