was talking to a friend yesterday and she and her DH has set up a FB page for their 2 yr old son so they could 'tag' him in photos!

He has over 200 friends on his profile and all his baby pics and he's 2!

AIBU to think this is weird and irresponsible?

Why irresponsible?

Good way to let friends and family see his photos!

readinginsteadnow · 02/01/2011 10:03

Its weird, because surely they could just put photos on the parents page.
Ireckon its also very pfb, and they have way too much time on their hands.

MakeAnotherCuppa · 02/01/2011 10:05

but they both have profiles with all his pictures on

Friends and family yes - random people no, they just except any friends requests so they dont actually know whos seeing his profile

It is definitely wierd but hardlt irresponsible. I'd guess it's a PFB too.

Bogeyface · 02/01/2011 10:06

I think that some people forget that the internet is never 100% safe, and that you should only put things on there that you dont mind staying on there forever and possibly accessed by undesirable people.

I personally wouldnt do it, but each to their own I guess. I bet they will soon lose interest if and when #2 turns up and they dont have so much time on their hands!

MoonUnitAlpha · 02/01/2011 10:08

Bit weird but I don't really see the harm.

stoppinchingthedummy · 02/01/2011 10:08

Um it is irresponsible- do you know how easy it is for people to save these pictures to their own computer?!!! Its awful why would u do that!!!! I actually had a fright because i am on fb and put pics of my dc on- for christmas i had a photobook from photobox of a lovely friend of mine BUT she had the pics of fb - made me realise how easy others could get them and although im careful with my friends list how do i really know what my old school friends are really doing with them?!!! That said my pics are no longer visable to people i dont see often!!

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:10

It is highly irresponsible! The minimum age for a FB account is 13, there is a reason for that. If friend or family want to look at pictures than post them in your profile, I do this, and only allow friends and family to view them. He has 200 friends, who? How does a 2 year old know 200 people. Sorry but this is open to paedophiles, what irresponsible parents, I would mention it to them.

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:13

They let him accept random people as friends not just family, stupid stupid stupid.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2011 10:13

The minimum age is kind of a red herring here because clearly the 2 year old won't be using it. The photos would be a "risk" whether they were on the child's parents page or his own.

It is the privacy settings that need to be sorted, not the account per se.

MoonUnitAlpha · 02/01/2011 10:15

A paedophile could also see your child in the street.

A 2 year old is hardly going to be groomed by someone online, so does it really matter if someone sees a picture of them?

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:17

Why does a 2 year old need a FB account, they sound so irresponsible that they will let him use it in no time.

stoppinchingthedummy · 02/01/2011 10:17

Moonunitalpha- yes a paedophile could see my child in the street - fully dressed and at a glimpse - so you would be happy for someone to have a picture of your child and god only knows what obscene things they might be doing with it?!! The person the op is talking about obviously doesnt care about this!!!!

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:19

Yes Moonuit but you are deliberately making your child more vulnerable, giving the name, details of your child, and not having Privacy settings for it? I have a FB account, but I am very scrupilous about it, who I accept as friends and what info I give out, these parents dont sound like that at all, accepting random people as freinds that they dont know.

MoonUnitAlpha · 02/01/2011 10:20

If a paedophile wants pictures of children then they'll be trawling the net for kiddy porn, not looking for family photos Hmm

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:21

As stoppin said, a paedophile in the street will only see my child at a glace, not know her name, age, location, and to potentially befriend her in the future when she is old enough to use a computer.

SantasENormaSnob · 02/01/2011 10:22

Shouldn't it be reported to fb?

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:23

Dont be too sure Moonunit, its asmptions like this that makes paedophilia easy on FB. There have been several stories I have heard on FB whereby children unmonitored have set up FB accounts, no privacy settings, accepting random people as friens, only to be groomed by paedophiles.

stoppinchingthedummy · 02/01/2011 10:23

moonunit facebook is apparently becoming the easiest way for a peado to access pictures of children - Hmm

pigletmania · 02/01/2011 10:25

You are potentially letting them into your family and your life, the internet is not safe, go talk to the Police and they will tell you. The internet allows people to be anonymous, they can assume any identity they wish, and lie, that is why you have to be very careful

BaggedandTagged · 02/01/2011 10:29

OOI, are there actually privacy settings on FB that can prevent "friends" copying/ republishing your photos? I don't think there are but I might be wrong.

MoonUnitAlpha · 02/01/2011 10:29

This thread isn't about an unsupervised child on facebook who is at risk of being groomed! If the child was 8 and had unsupervised internet access it would be different.

If paedos just want photos of toddlers, maybe they should check out the Mothercare catalogue.

faverolles · 02/01/2011 10:32

There was someone connected to child protection on here a while ago (cant remember the name) who, as part of her job had come across cases where a paedophile had used various images, and photoshopped them, so that potentially, the innocent photo of your child on fb could be turned into horrific child porn.
Would any of you be happy about that, seeing as it's not directly harming your child?
I certainly wouldn't.

StayingFatherChristmasGirl · 02/01/2011 10:36

It depends what other details about the child are on his fb page. If there are things like full name, dob and location, then that is far more than is available to someone who looks at the Mothercare catalogue or passes a child in the street.

If the parents are on his friends list, then that also gives their initials, and with that info, you could get an address for the child from the phone directory - which is far more information that I would like total strangers to have about my baby!

seeker · 02/01/2011 10:38

Why is it different from
putting your baby photos on your own facebook page? A bit precious and cutesy but no more than that.
