Really, really hate it!!
Does anyone else have a crappy special day their birthday falls on?
I have hated New years day forever, when i was younger it was because EVERYWHERE was closed, then as a teen/young adult it was because everyone had a hangover and basically forgot!!
I've tried to be like the Queen and have one in the summer too, but it didn't really work Wink

Now I think I hate it because so much is expected of me, "oooooh it's your birthday on new years day!! How fab!"

Humph.
AIBU? Or am I just a big sulky dumpling?!

I am surprised that an adult would have a get-together for their birthday every year. I only have get-toegthers on my decade birthdays. I wouldn't be surprised at all if family and friends had other things on on my birthday.

I think there is a smidgeoun of exaggerated self-pity going on here Wink

theevildead2 · 31/12/2010 15:52

Happy Birthday!

I'm pregnant and I've been willing baby to come out today or tomorrow though! I always thought it would be nice to always have someone up for a night out on your birthday though!? You can go out tonight and celebrate the new year and your b-day at midnight!

28th of Dec or something like that would be shit though.

GabbyLoggon · 31/12/2010 16:55

YES, Nanny, I get the problem. But I think HATE might be a strong word. Good luck.

stleger · 31/12/2010 16:55

Ggirl - we were in labour together. Ds arrived at 5.10 pm, so we missed out on being in the local paper as 'last baby of the year'/'first baby of the year'. His best birthdays were millennium eve (as nobody was quite sure what to do at a millenium) and his 17th when we had a surprise party. People always seem to be busy/away at new year. DD2 whose birthday is just before Christmas had parties during the week before the big day - she seemed to do well with random emergency gifts, some probably grabbed from guests' Santa presents. I was also told in Tesco a few years ago that 'birthday cakes aren't stocked this time of year' Hmm.

loscann · 31/12/2010 16:56

I'm 40+2 today and having painful but irregular contractions, so in my opinion YABVVVVU! Tomorrow feels like a lovely day to be born to me. Wink

LadyBiscuit · 31/12/2010 17:05

Mine is on the 2nd and I really hate it - it's usually the first day back to work too. And everyone is starting their New Year's Resolutions which means no food, drink or celebrating :( At least if you are born before NY Day, you get a bit of a knees up.

OP - now we have children, we tend to celebrate on NY Day rather than NYE and all my friends get together with our kids for a lovely lunch. Can you do something similar? Happy birthday for tomorrow :)

theevildead2 · 31/12/2010 17:07

ooh good luck loscann

I'm not Envy at all, promise!

stleger · 31/12/2010 17:43

(It is pretty good in hospital if you are having a hospital birth - they don't usually induce so much around holidays, so it is a bit quieter! Good luck to all new year babies).

LilRedWG · 31/12/2010 17:47

Mine is today. It sucks - I've always hated it.

seanbonbon · 31/12/2010 17:53

Mine is today too and I've always hated it too, it's the end of christmas (boo hiss).
Feel slightly better that there are so many people who feel the same way. Perhaps we could form a support group?

Xmas Grin

Doigthebountyeater · 31/12/2010 18:52

My sister's birthday is on the 11th July. That is the night before the twelfth of july parades etc in N.Ireland. Everything closes down on the 11th including buses/trains/pubs etc and for years there were the illegal roadblocks on every road with the Drumcree situation. My sis is 30 so has only known the troubles and post troubles situation and therefore has effectively never had a birthday she could actually celebrate.

I on the other hand was born on 21st April, same day as her maj which meant they always used to play the national anthem in the morning on the radio. When I was young, I convinced myself it was for me and forced my family to stand to attention for me on my special day Grin

LadyBiscuit · 31/12/2010 18:56

We should seanbonbon (although does it say something about us that we are all on MN when we should be putting spangly frocks on? :o)

RueLaChesty · 31/12/2010 19:23

my birthday is 24th january which has been voted most depressing day of the year as its the day xmas bills come in. Its always before payday of a 5 week month and everyone says oh we'll get you a pressie/
card when we get paid and that seldom happens. :(

Its my 30th coming up and i would just love someone to even make me a card!

madangelhaironchristmasday · 31/12/2010 20:16

LilRed and Seanbon - Happy mutual birthdays!! Come join me in a baileys or threee and celebrate our great NYE bdays. :)

Raahh · 31/12/2010 20:22

mine was yesterday (30th). I get depressed ever year. i would prob get depressed by the 'one year older' thing anyway, but because everywhere is in such retrospective mood at New Year, it makes it worse. I am 40 next year- doubt there will be a party, even if i wanted/could afford one. (half my family are already going abroad anyway)

Ds's was the day before (29th). i make sure he doesn't miss out. His pressies are NEVER wrapped in Xmas paper.

Made sure dd1 and 2 were NOT xmas birthdays!!Grin

nogreatexpectations · 31/12/2010 20:25

Mine is the 24th December and I love it Smile as I get older I prefer to forget the odd year.
Happy birthday OP

traceybath · 31/12/2010 20:26

Happy Birthday for tomorrow!

DS2's birthday is boxing day - an unbelievably rubbish day for a birthday. If only I'd kept my legs crossed for longer Wink

I do feel for him though as my other 2 dc's and my birthday are july/august which is much better I think.

lou33 · 31/12/2010 20:29

happy birthday for tomorrow

i sympathise though, dd2 was born on the 29th december and mine is 3rd jan

and this year i am ill, and dd2 is not great either

EvianBaby · 31/12/2010 22:27

Mine is tomorrow too - I have never really loved it although my family do make an effort. I have always got presents (normally bought in the sale Wink) wrapped in Christmas paper or... worse than that, joint Christmas and Birthday presents! My mum and sister are fab at making it special though Smile

lainey1981 · 31/12/2010 22:36

I feel your pain , mine was yesterday and I hate the fact that most people forget, and that everyone expects me to celebrate it on nye so as they can't afford 2 nights out in a row!

Breezy1985 · 31/12/2010 22:46

My mums is tomorrow and i can always remember her moaning that she never actually gets a card through the post on her birthday and everyones too busy to celebrate!

Gubbins · 01/01/2011 00:05

A friend of mine's birthday is tomorrow (Today! Better text.) and she has always hated it. On occasions as a teenager she had to cook her own birthday lunch as her mother was too hungover to make it out of bed. If anyone remembers then they almost always give her champagne rather than a proper present and she has never ever had a party on her actual birthday as everyone is recovering from the night before. Grim.

I haven't yet broken this to the friend whose baby was born last new years day.

GrimmaTheNome · 01/01/2011 00:12

Oh! Only just seen this.
Its my birthday too - and yes, everywhere is closed except the Inn at Whitewell which is fully booked and the nice pub down the road which (fortunately for DH) wasn't Grin

In past years its been either DH and DDs homecooking or Pizza Express.

But at least (a) everyone remembers my birthday and (b) I never have to work.

Happy Birthday Nanny and other New Years Babes! Smile

maighdlin · 01/01/2011 00:59

doig my sisters birthday it the 13 july. When she was younger at the parades everyone knew it was her birthday the next day and give her a pound, which my mum and dad drank away that night Hmm

my DH cousin's birthday is xmas day, as is a mate of mine's. (grammar?) thats a crap day to have your birthday on.

I was booked in for my c/s on my birthday but asked them to change it like a big child because i knew it would forever be her birthday. she instead was born two days later. I was 22 and 2 days old when she was born, which i like and it will mean that her 18th birthday will be 2 days after my fortieth.

firsttimemum77 · 01/01/2011 01:09

It was my birthday yesterday NYE. I love it! Double celebration and I'm always made to feel special by all my family and friends. No one forgets either, which is a bonus!
