Sky news has just announced that the man arrested for Joanna Yeates' murder is her Landlord.

I can't think what to say, everything I think of seems trite :(

Do you think it's possible that people who think that are maybe just naturally good at reading body language? Ian Huntley's been mentioned a fair bit - that there was something 'off' about him. I can't see how anyone can look at someone else and think 'ooh murderer' otherwise. Mind you, I can't explain sexing bumps that way either.

I think the Ian Huntley point is valid, personally. When he was arrested and charged, criminologists advised that the perpetrator of a crime such as this likes to be involved - with the police and the press. They like to make themselves known to be 'helpful' - which is what Ian Huntley did, and so has this guy. So I can see the similarity in that.

Alright Stratton?

Weirdly enough I was just having this exact conversation with the bloke, he can't see it, but I always get a feeling from the eyes. So many convicted murderers/neglecters/abusers have a weird/evil/vacant look to me.

So sad this case, but obviously the speedy work of the police is making it easier on the family, from what they've said.

"Ian Huntley's been mentioned a fair bit - that there was something 'off' about him."

Yes but almost all of that stuff is done within hindsight and context.
It's like the way people look at the pictures of the two boys who killed James Bulger and describe them as "pure evil/ you can tell there's something wrong with them/ you can see it in them even then" when the reality is it's two normal looking kids who we know have done something horrific and so have convinced ourselves we can pick up on their evil. I think this is mainly because we want to convince ourselves that they are somehow different from the rest of us and that we'd somehow have picked up on their badness if they were people in our lives. The same thing happens with photos of Ian Huntley or Rose West, when the reality is both of those people look like a million harmless people in a million different towns, they look a bit simple and a bit like they might be loners but that's it. There's no face of comic book evil there so we invent one to protect ourselves from the thought that it could be our brother/auntie/the quiet lad down the pub we sometimes chat to.

"I think the Ian Huntley point is valid, personally. I'd distinguish that completely. This isn't people just saying "I can tell by the look of him" or guessing which one it is and then when one of the people they guessed turns out to be suspected they can shout "see I told ya", that's based on actual behaviour and the study of human behaviour.

Blimey the PC police are out in droves tonight - I am going to admit both DH and I said he was an odd looking fish the moment we saw him- DH would have him convicted on the fact that he had mad hair and wore a black polo neck - luckily DH isn't in the police force!

But whilst we make small minded quips about things like this the sad fact is a very lovely beautiful young woman has lost her life and her poor devastated family and partner have to go through the rest of their lives trying to understand their loss and never ever having a happy Christmas again or see grandchildren or walk her down the aisle.

Agree about the hindsight - always easy to retrofit. There was a shocking cation with the photo of the landlord on the front of the newspaer this morning - it said 'does this man hold the key to Jo's murder' which seemed pretty stark when the accompanying story was about how maybe he had heard something - a feeble story that certainly did not seem to warrant that headline which definitely implied more than a witness statement. At the time, I thought - that's a bit strong, people will get the wrong impression. I presume the reporters already had information that the man was actually likely to be charged.

Blimey I can't believe they deleted that, it wasn't even that bad!

It was about Malificence and said she was deluded and something else which is an offensive term but I don't even think it counts as a swear word! I mean it wasn't polite but still . . .

Manatee, it wasn't me! I thought it was funny, I was being dry in my post after Xmas Smile

Haven't seen any pictures of the bloke, but when I heard on the radio he had said he had seen her leaving with two other people, it made me think suspiciously of him.
