but AIBU to want to go to a proper old school rave?

In my early 20's I used to go to a lot illegal raves. I very occasionally used to take drugs but have since stopped all that lark. I never did it much anyway, preferring to get a bit drunk then just dance my ass off all night. I was very heavily into the scene and went every weekend all weekend.

Fwd wind a few years later I am now 36 I have a dd who is 3.5. I have just been invited to a warehouse party by old raving mate of mine whos never really left the scene. One of the main oraganisers of the raves back the are celebrating thier 20 yr anniversary this yr with an all out old school party in London and I think I want to go.

I am still fit and healthy and still enjoy the music but am more than too aware of the type of people I will be surrounded by. I would never ever take a drug again and intend to do it like I used to. Am i too old just for a one off night to relive old times.

Go, you'll be surprised when you realise how many people are the same age as you.

Alouiseg · 29/12/2010 15:52

We'll need a gurning emoticon. Grin just isn't lopsided enough.

Go, have fun, enjoy.

swanandduck · 29/12/2010 15:53

Go if you think you'll have a good time.

Your friend does sound a little sad though Sad

Mhamai · 29/12/2010 15:59

Yes go but on the condition I come too, ok I'd have to come from Dublin but 45 minutes on a ryan air flight will have me more than in the mood for raving! Hmm Grin Enjoy but be safe, contradiction if ever there was one. Oldish fart syndrome. Wink

Malificence · 29/12/2010 16:07

I can't imagine anything worse than being surrounded by pathetic saddos off their faces on drink and drugs.
It's even more sad than 30/40 somethings going to festivals to be "down with the yoof".

SpringHeeledJack · 29/12/2010 16:14

do it do it do it

and what BoF said. If you don't get a tiny bit off your face you will be bored stiff after about 30 minutes, then leave in tears after 90

The first and only warehouse party in London I have been to more recently than yourself had junkies everywhere, distressed dogs running around and a toddler stood on their own in the middle of one of the dance floors in only a dirty nappy staring at the lighting rig. I reported to Police, waited till they arrived and left. There is the risk of being spiked and just the fumes you would be exposed to could affect you especially with some of the nastier new drugs out there. I personally wouldn't do it, by all means go out and party, but I would chose a safer and more savoury environment to do it in.

I have been to hardcore rave nights loads of times since my daughter was born. My husband has to. If you enjoy the music then go for it.

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 29/12/2010 17:20

i am 43 and as soon as i feel able to after this baby is born i cant wait to hit a club with dh and our friends, hard to get out untill late with young kids so usually end up at one now and again.drug days well past me tho haha enjoy it,long time dead.

BluTac · 29/12/2010 17:28

Who made the rules about how old/young you are allowed to be to enjoy certain things anyway? malifience I go to festivals (at the advanced age of 35) It's because I enjoy the music/atmosphere/camping etc, not because I want to be "down with the kids" there are people of all ages there. Dont' let your age restrict you if you want to do something Smile

tethersend · 29/12/2010 17:30

Go, but be prepared to tut at everyone there Grin

And try not to fall into any K-holes Wink

nomoreheels · 29/12/2010 17:35

ASW, err, what fumes exactly?I am fairly up to speed on what people are taking these days, even if I'm not partaking, & nothing has fumes. Apart from spliff, or nitrous oxide balloons if you really stretch it! :)

Agree that ket is rank - I just don't see the appeal, apart from the cheap price tag I guess? People who have had too much are utterly useless, need babysitting & often end up spewing everywhere. Why anyone would think it enhances dancing is beyond me.

Anyhow, I don't go to warehouse raves, more underground clubs with around 250 capacity. Nice intimate basement raving. Or give me Berghain in Berlin anytime, it's amazing! Thankfully you never see many scary drug wash-ups or kids in dirty nappies at these kinds of places...

Depends on what kind of rave it is. If it was a normal club night full of teenagers I wouldn't go but I went to 'a back to the old skool' event type rave last year with my friends and we are all 33-36.

It was a one off thing for a special occassion and we had a fantastic time. We were not the oldest people there. Most people were our age. They played all the classics from 89-early 90s.

We were naughty and took drugs, giggling in the toilets together trying not to get caught by toilet attendants or security, babbling self-important crap just like the old days! I remember dancing on stage feeling like a 16 year old again. It was great.

Go.

Can I come? :o
