To think that the nice stuff NEVER goes in the sales?

Only the tacky crap that noone will buy full price. Correct me if I'm wrong. And tell me where the decent bargains are.

I couldn't agree more. I see people coming out of shops with great big bags of stuff and wonder what on earth they have bought?

I am not a mad rushed person in the sales. I tend to look for quality stuff that I probably wouldn't pay full price, like a top for my dc I wouldn't pay more then 10 pounds for but if it was a 16 pound top reduced to 8 I would get it.

I also look at the material and decide whether it is worth it. I find with next, you pay top price for something that looks nice but it is made from rubbish material. I prefer cotton for instance.

Plus I look and see if the discount is worth it too. Some people just see it is reduced and panic buy. So if something is say, 9 pounds but was only 12 in the first place, it isn't worth it.

Today I only came home with a couple of items. I got a lovely top for ds that is 90 per cent cotton and 10 per cent cashmere and it was marked from 16 to 7 pounds. So it ticked all the boxes for me, quality and a decent discount.

Monsoon had some nice kids stuff in the sale too.

Yanbu, I went to next today and it was rubbish. I managed to get some boots for my dd and peep toe boots for myself. Although I have to admit it was a struggle to find anything worth buying. I did however manage to buy some lovely riding thigh boots in clarkes for sixty quid reduced from one twenty. They are divine...... Dh hates them though

MrsRhettButler · 28/12/2010 01:17

well i got THE dress i have wanted since the summer but couldn't afford the £70 for £20!! yay yay yay Grin

i love sales

FaffTastic · 28/12/2010 01:39

Bought a few things about a fortnight ago and was very relieved today to see they weren't in the sale!

Was umming and aahing about buying a rather overpriced cashmere jumper during the same shopping spree 2 weeks ago. Thank God I didn't get it. Snapped it up today when I saw on-line that it had 40% off. So that was me well chuffed.

Got a few other bits in the sales today but not too much. A coat I had tried on about a month ago and liked which was down to £60 from £120 and a jumper dress for £25 down from £65.

All done on-line from the comfort of my own living room, with a glass of wine in hand and the fire on. Really couldn't be bothered with the crowds and hassle of it all this year.

newwave · 28/12/2010 01:42

Depends where you are shopping, partner bought two pairs of Churchill Oxford business shoes for less than £60 a pair

ladysybil · 28/12/2010 01:59

a lot of places now do sale previews. so for example, i not only buy next stuff online, i get first pick. ie, i did my next sale shoppin glast week on wednesday. By friday, almost half of it was gone. and that was long before the sale started in the shops.

good stuff goes full price. they dont need to reduce it. bargains are rare.

I am lucky that I am an odder size - 18 and 36 or 36.5 feet.

I get loads of good stuff in the sales. Nice white company dress coming for £35, their roll top trousers £22.50. Good quality - last years are in perfect nick though have been washed weekly.

Posher sales are better (not Next) so White company, Monsoon, Brora, Toast/Boden/Plumo. I don't think their stuff is shit just overpriced - their sales bring it into my price range. Toast have a beautiful pair of shoes at £135 when they were £230-ish. I'm not buying them as I can't afford them but they would be excellent quality

Cheap shitty clothes will always be cheap shitty clothes even at half price.

Bathsheba · 28/12/2010 14:46

We got an Isofix Car seat half price from Mamas And Papas which we needed and it was a great price.

Depends what you are after, I have had lots from the sales that has been nice. I didnt need anything clothes wise but DH did and the Next sale online was great - managed to et about 70% of the things from the current directory he had marked.

glub · 28/12/2010 16:00

re the next sale - do what i did this year and buy what you like before the sale then go in for a refund and buy it back at half the price later. then chuckle to yourself at the thought of all those losers in the queue at some ungodly hour freezing their bits off.

JemimaMop · 28/12/2010 16:10

i think if you keep in mind what you actually want and only look for them then you can find bargains. It is when you start buying for the sake of it just because things are cheap that the problems start!

I love Monsoon jeans as they fit me really well. I went into Monsoon and found some jeans half price, bought them, job done. DD also found a bag in there to spend some of her christmas money on, again it was half price.

Same with Clarks boots, I wear them for work as I am on my feet a lot and they are comfy, I have an exact idea of the style that I want. I went into Clarks and found boots in my size and in that style, half price.

I wanted shirts for the boys and had seen some nice ones in M&Co before Christmas, I took the chance that they would be reduced in the sales and they were.

I also bought next year's Christmas cards half price in Oxfam Xmas Grin

SummerRain · 28/12/2010 16:15

2 years a go i was pregnant with ds2 and due in Feb so i hit the Next sale on the day it started and got a massive pile of beautiful babyclothes at 50% off.

I generally have good luck in sales but you can bet your ass this year when i have christmas money to spend and a heap of clothes i desperately need there'll be othing Grin

bishboschone · 28/12/2010 16:21

I got some lovely stuff from Next sale(maternity) I dont like their normal stuff. I get a vip slot and it cam etoday and its all new , not like the beaten old stuff that is lying on the floor in the shops!

grumpypants · 28/12/2010 16:27

I'm so glad I haven't bothered then! Xmas Eve I had a look, and it was all 30% off, shiny party dresses etc, no decent stuff. I can only imagine Boots etc is full of those gift sets of weird make up names, and any handbags will be long gone. Will not bother!

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 29/12/2010 21:56

I bought a coat and a couple of jumpers from Monsoon Blush I needed some jumpers as most of mine are threadbare. As for the coat, erm...

BelligerentYhoULE · 29/12/2010 22:02

I'm going to have a look tomorrow.

Am hoping to find some Anglomania reduced in Selfridges but the websites don't look promising.

Will also look in Gap and The White Company but not sure where else to try - can't stand Next; usually like Warehouse but there's virtually nothing I like in there; Oasis seems to have gone really, really horrible in the last two years.

methsdrinker · 29/12/2010 22:09

Binfullofgibletsonthe45

If you are a buyer or have any influence
will you get some dresses with sleeves in you firm, Get the promotions people to advertise your shops. All you need to do is say we have dreses with sleeves and you will be over run, Preference would be sleeved dresses for summer and working women ones. Oh for a sleeved dress in England its a tempeate climate, not with puffy sleeves that you get on toddler dresses an sensible sleeve to the wrist. Go on I dare you give us women over 28 something we really want and need,

Mists · 29/12/2010 22:13

DH and I went into NEXT earlier because we had a Christmas voucher to spend but it was bloody terrifying.

There were many large skimpily-clad leopard-skinned orange people being very aggressive.

They had beribboned massive prams which seemed be to weapons!

We only went there to get a few basics, pants and socks not in the sale but will be avoiding until after New Year.

methsdrinker · 29/12/2010 22:52

"with sleeves in your shops"

Sorry rubbish grammer and typing and spelling actually tut!!!!

Maylee · 30/12/2010 00:05

I got a gorgeous dress in the Warehouse sale (£15 off) - was the last one left and in my size Grin

I HATE the NEXT sale though. In fact, I dislike their clothes generally.......

nomoreheels · 30/12/2010 00:16

I find it's worth having a look in shops that are a bit out of my price range come the sales. I've picked up some absolute bargains in Whistles, Jigsaw, Karen Millen etc - and plenty of sizes 10/12/14 available too.

christmaswishes · 30/12/2010 00:22

Hi Posh,

This is so true why bother with sales shopping on clothes etc. Its items that have gone out of fashion or they have size 6 or size 30. tiny or huge. I have never got a bargain.

LaWeaselMys · 30/12/2010 01:10

Oh god, I was being good and thinking, ha I don't want anything anyway. But I love Monsoon kids clothes, and it does do great sales. Toddler jeans for £10, and super cute.

Resisting.
