AIBU to think that childrens beautiful pageants are vile

I don't understand why any rational parent would slap om make up and set their little girl up to compete in beauty pagaents. I also get massively irritated with parents who put their kids photos onto to bonnie baby competitions online and ask me to vote for their plain looking child!

okaren - doing your dd's hair nicely is perfectly ok - the point is a braid or whatever is an age appropriate grooming activity :-)

0karen · 27/12/2010 23:20

Good we agree on that

So why are beauty pageants different to modelling or acting? Should children be banned from appearing in films? They have to audition (compete) and most are chosen because of their looks and are equally objectified

Having experienced one I would have loved to have done more, it was fun. People go over the top and read things into it.

rudolpherina · 28/12/2010 00:52

No you are NBU they are disgusting. Agree also with the person who said about irish dancing. The height of our preparation for this when we were young, was having our hair put in ringlets and our dress pressed. Now it is awful. False tan, wigs, etc

scoobytoo · 28/12/2010 07:03

Okaren you said you children don't 'normally' wear make up, how old are they and when do they wear make up?

Those Irish Dancing wigs are really creepy you are right

The ballet dancing competitions are IMO only marginally better than pageants. At least they have to do some exercise and master some more complex skills but the mothers and make up thing are just as bad

Beachholiday I totally agree about the kids 'enjoying just trying to get mums approval and are mostly too young when they start to know whether they enjoy or not.

Suntangirl You've made me think about posting pics on facebook now. I don't post often and I am wondering if I delete pictures on facebook whether they are still in the archive and available to facebook? Do you know?

Oh I cannot stand those pageants. They're so big in the US, mostly with the Southern white trash (trying to be debs). They get their little girls tanned, false teeth/teeth bleaching, make up, hair coloured/highlighted, nails done, etc. It's absolutely disgusting.

I just don't get why parents would want their little girls to look like hookers. They have them sing inappropriate songs and dance around like a stripper. It's like a paedophile's dream come true.

neither can I santa, really just cannot see the point in it at all, mystifies me tbh why mothers want their dc to experience that kind of thing

ZZZenAgain · 28/12/2010 09:18

shame about the developments in Irish dancing too. Why the suntan (like it is something traditionally Irish or what?)

sungirltan · 28/12/2010 09:19

scooby - i'm not sure you have to go through the t&c's with a fine tooth comb. plus they update them quite often and renew all the privacy settings.
none of them are to protect you and your children though. facebook is a business.

scoobytoo · 28/12/2010 09:24

I agree that child acting, singing modelling is not particularly great for kids either. I am sure the vast majority are not scarred by it but there are thousands that are messed up for life. We can all roll a list of names of adults who are messed up due to their acting or singing childhood. The only difference being as Santa said is that at least they are learning a skill!

You've really made me think about facebook now and why I bother uploading photos. Think I will stop!

scooby - i hate to spoil anyones fun but its definitely an 'informed choice' thing :-)

saintknickerless · 28/12/2010 10:23

I agree about the pageants - they are vile! I disagree about the bonny baby comps though. I always vote for friends kids. Thinking that your baby is the most beautiful thing to have ever existed is normal for new mums imo - even if the child is 'plain' Hmm. Ther babies aren't judged on their looks anyway - just how many people their parents can get to vote for them!

saint - of course its normal to think your baby is the most beautiful of all but why the need to pitch them against other babies its so weird! what does it mean if the baby gets the least votes?

scoobytoo · 28/12/2010 18:01

Saint you kind of explained why I hate those Bonnie baby competitions in your post trying to defend them! It is because it's about how many votes the mums can drum up so it's totally pointless and often about getting traffic to a website.

So has anyone on here put their baby into an online bonnie baby competition and if so why?

OP posts:
sungirltan · 28/12/2010 18:55

yup - same here thinking riven has explained why the contests are just wrong.

TyraG · 28/12/2010 19:52

I've had friends put their babies in those online contests and ask for votes. I always ignore them. They're not roping me into all that bullshit.
