to think that one born every minute live is pretty unethical

I have no desire to watch anyone giving birth, I don't find it magical or thrilling at all!

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 24/12/2010 10:14

I love watching strangers giving birth Xmas Blush

I put it down to very much wanting to do it all again myself (ain't happening though).

I fear it maybe the start of a slippery slope towards pushing a reborn around in a big pink pram Xmas Grin

allnightlong · 24/12/2010 10:18

I'd hate to give birth in that hospital with the film crews around. I hated when they used to film the woman screaming in the hallway it just seems such an invasion of privacy to me.

southeastastra · 24/12/2010 10:20

can't really believe that this is christmas entertainment in 2010, we must lead such boring lives

violethill · 24/12/2010 10:23

Exactly SEA. That's what really shocked me. That its prime time Christmas entertainment to some people

snowyweather · 24/12/2010 10:24

ifancyashandy - I am afraid that i think it can be unethical, who really wants snippets of their labour shown every hour on commercials? I tend to agree that I think some women will be horrified when they look back and see that their labour has been entertainment for the nation.

IAmOnOneBorn · 24/12/2010 10:25

I am going to be on One Born at Christmas and have already given birth. The births aren't going to be live although there may be some that are recorded and edited with live updates from outside the labour room on the day as I understand it. I'm not certain quite how the live element of it is going to work but I was assured that there would be no giving birth live on TV (and clearly there hasn't for me!). The births are going to be shorter segments about more births than on the normal series so you'll see more women giving birth on each programme. I've seen the rough edit of our clip already and it is tastefully done (hated watching it though!).

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 24/12/2010 10:25

not sure about teh people having hours and hours of time to make their decision.

tehre was a programme filmed in the ulster earlier in teh year and i know one of the mums featured. she said she arrived at the hospital in labour and the crew were there, they just askd if she minded being filmed. she said at that point she didn't give a damn who was there. so not really much time to think about it. this was BBC though.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 24/12/2010 10:26

Iamononeborn i thought the premise of teh show was that the babies were born on xmas day?

allnightlong · 24/12/2010 10:26

ifacyashandy the point it people shouldn't have to inform a film crew they don't want to be filmed they are in a hospital not a film set!

They want as many Christmas day babies as possible, I think, but there are plenty of us who have had babies in the last week or so who will be featuring.

snowyweather · 24/12/2010 10:31

IAmOnOneBorn - what motivated you to be on the show?

How did they get your consent?

Why do you hate watching it?

Congratulations.

KenDoddsDadsDogEatsTinsel · 24/12/2010 10:31

Iamononeborn - many congratulations!

IAmOnOneBorn · 24/12/2010 10:37

I wanted to have the DVD keepsake as I don't plan to have any more babies.

They got my consent by talking about it all and signing release forms but you have the option to pull out at any time and they aim to let you see the rough edit first to gain your approval.

I hate watching it because I had the most intense, quick birth and they kept in all of the part of me going through transition then needing to push which was horrible. Also, they kept in all the bits of me having a go at DH (not that there were many bits) but none of the times that I said 'thank-you' to him. I'm worried that I come across as a bit of a cow!

Thanks so much for the quick response.

I wish you and your family a merry christmas.

I suppose you will get the rough end of the clever editing they do.

I wondered if women have any say over the editing but I suppose not.

Congratulations again!!

IAmOnOneBorn · 24/12/2010 11:23

I was given the option to change how things were edited but chose not to. I'm more upset about how I behaved than how they edited it!

Anyway, off to enjoy my children now...

fluffles · 24/12/2010 11:45

there has already been a live birth on tv once before and i noticed the woman was actually a midwife - so obviously they've gone for somebody who is as 'informed' about what might happen as possible.

she wasn't even examined as they said an internal wasn't necessary and had a very natural birth and i remember wondering if it would be possible for a 'normal' woman to give birth like that without anybody footling around inside her... i'd like that.

ifancyashandy · 24/12/2010 14:17

IamOneBorn so pleased to hear my fellow telly people have integrity and respect! We're not all bad!

BrandyButterPie · 24/12/2010 14:31

I can't even watch the adverts - I do wish they wouldn't keep coming on :( Just a little bit makes me all panicy for hours afterwards, and I have two healthy children- I dread to think how it makes women whose traumatic births didn't turn out so well feel....

BrandyButterPie · 24/12/2010 14:33

In fact, while we're talking about it - which channel is it on? I have been avoiding tv because of the adverts for this, but presumably it won't be advertised on other channels.

blueshoes · 24/12/2010 14:46

What a tasteless idea for a programme.

weedle · 24/12/2010 14:53

Brandy Butter Pie I hate the ads too - had a horrible experience in that hospital. The last lot of ads had the room I was in on there plus the alarm bells going off. I ended up getting in touch with birth afterthoughts. I don't know many people who had a nice experience there so IamOneBorn I'm glad you did

BrandyButterPie · 24/12/2010 15:04

How can they even think it is ok to show such things on adverts? At least we can avoid the programmes.

Does anyone know what channel it is on, so I can relax watching the others? Is it ITV? It sounds like ITV.
