To think I deserve more than just delivery charge refunded (warning: rant)

just got my Tesco delivery and ALL my meat for Christmas and boxing day 'was unavailable', as well as my short crust pastry, chicken liver for pate, and my toffee pudding.
I placed the order a week ago and even checked it last night on line. the meat and pudding said next to them that I could not change the quantity of them in my order as those items had been reserved for me so AIBU to think that they actually would?
when I called to complain was told its what's on the shelf on the day. so what's the freakin point of pre ordering?
now I have to go out with my 3mo dd, and me with mastitis, on Christmas eve to try and get something when I was going to be spending that time doing prep. and that's if I can even find anything in the shops, we'll probably wind up with a boring old chicken.
I'm raging!!!!!!!

Sorry that little explanation wasn't aimed at you OP.

chillichill · 23/12/2010 17:47

only little m&s near me. only big supermarkets near by are Tesco and Asda so think it will be Asda tomorrow. I'm going to write Tesco am email since I'm better at complaining intelligently on paper rather than on the phone.

Best pre-order (guaranteed) quality turkeys etc has to be m&s, but I'm not sure if they deliver - I've always collected.

Asda home delivery is a bit crap, IME the veg they bring is always one or two days away from BB date or sometimes on the turn already.

I can see why you're annoyed but realistically you are always at the mercy of what's on the shelves at the time your order is picked.

AFAIK the stickers with your name on are printed out as the person walks round the store I don't think they actually put stuff to one side for you do they ? I assumed it was just to make sure the right orders stay together.

Nothing at this time of year is going to ideal - my local butcher once lost my pre order for a turkey and that was so hi tech it involved a piece of paper and a pencil.

The only way to be sure to get what you need is to go to the shop, I know how impractical this can be but I can't see an alternative

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/12/2010 17:55

I've never had anything delivered with my name stuck to it - is this something they just do at Christmas then Confused

Chrysanthemum5 · 23/12/2010 17:59

Chill - there are two waitrose stores in Edinburgh so I think we do get their delivery service now - isn't that ocado?

scarletbegonia · 23/12/2010 18:05

maisie - I often get big stuff like nappies and washing powder with pre printed stickers with my name on. I assumes it was because they might not fit in the boxes that they deliver the stuff in and it makes it easier for the driver to know whose it is.

Any Tesco pickers around ?

taintedsnow · 23/12/2010 18:08

Oh dear. :(

I think you're probably unlikely to get anything other than the delivery charge back, although I do understand your utter annoyance at this. I'd feel the same.

ASDA are brilliant in my area, far better than Ocado, so I think it must vary from place to place. Don't listen to people who dismiss them entirely!

Hope you get some bits tomorrow!

chillichill · 23/12/2010 18:16

Chrys- I think they are partners but not the same company. I checked to see if I could get ocado and I can't, don't deliver here.

Imisssleeping · 23/12/2010 18:18

That is crap and yanbu .
I have never, ever ordered food online, I hate paying for a delivery I always think I could buy something nice for that amount.
From the stories I hear on here I never will order online.
I do quite like pootling round the supermarket though (most of the time)

fruitful · 23/12/2010 18:18

Hmm. Tesco sent me an email a couple of weeks ago, saying that various items in my order were going to be "pre-ordered" - the turkey, in particular. They said I would not be able to remove the items, cancel the items, or change the quantity after a certain date (about the 14th, I think). Since then they have had red text next to them in my order, saying I can't change them.

That does heavily imply that they have organised those items, rather than just getting what is available off the shelf. There is really no point having the early cut-off date and not letting you change it, if you still only get stock off the shelf.

So no, YANBU at all.

The rest of the subs - that's online shopping for you. I get a delivery on the 23rd, and then dh goes to Morissons on the 24th for the rest. Because Morissons is in our town centre and even when Tescos is heaving, it will still be quite civilised in there!

JetLi · 23/12/2010 18:18

Chillichill - might be worth checking your little M&S though - our teeny one is open until 10pm this week & it's blissfully quiet late on. If it were me I'd try & get out late tonight & then give myself a break tomorrow.
Tesco have delivered a load of short dated stuff to my DSIS today - they want shooting with shit.

perfumeditsawonderfullife · 23/12/2010 18:26

OP I don't think you are being unreasonable, the red mark telling you that quantities cannot be changed does indeed imply the meat was ordered.

I was very badly let down by Tesco once too many times and the customer servives is almost as bad as Adsa. I love Morrisions now, it's not too big or too busy and always has good offers on. Last week was buy one carton of Roses, get two free Xmas Grin So I bought six!

The other nice little things they don't sell I just get elsewhere. I will never give Tesco or Asda my custom again. They have become too big and a monopoly, the customer service deteriorates accordingly.

I have done a Christmas shop at midnight before when baby was up anyway! Very quiet and much easier than normal.

Also I have seen waitrose delivery vans out in our area so I am guessing they deliver food but that's not much use to you just now.

For the record YANBU

mangoandlime · 23/12/2010 19:24

I wonder if you picked up a cancelled slot meaning it was too late for Tesco to sort out exactly what you had ordered? Maybe other orders had been fullfilled a few weeks before and yours was just too late for that to be possible.

Hope you sort it out!

mangoandlime · 23/12/2010 19:28

Ftr, deliveries from Waitrose stores = WaitroseDeliver, Ocado delivers Waitrose food but it comes from a central warehouse.

PressureDrop · 23/12/2010 19:39

It's totally off that they didn't bring pre-ordered Christmas meats. They know full well they are leaving you up shit's creek on the 23rd Dec.

I would complain more strongly.

PickleSarnie · 23/12/2010 20:22

Tesco are crap. We ordered 3 bottles of Tattinger champagne which was £33 reduced to £16. So a big old bargain. Which was the only reason we were buying 3 bottles of champagne. Not because we needed them.

Anyhoo, the poor delivery man arrived in the snow and told us they had substituted for Tesco own brand. Which weren't on special offer. So a completely ridiculous substitution. I understand that they could have run out, but wouldn't it have been better to call or email to let me know the proposed substitution instead of wasting mine and the poor, cold delivery mans time?

Ocado on the other hand are lovely. They called to say they had no more of the turkey crown we ordered for Christmas lunch so they were substituting it with a mahoosive turkey instead worth £30 more and giving us a £30 voucher. Lovely.
