To think people with pristine houses are weird

I try, the house is OKish, my rules being "would social services take my kids away". But there are certain sticky bits on the carpet.

The loo seat doesn't fit right and most of the wallpaper is scribbled on.

Am I alone in this?

I watch reality TV and most peoples' houses are more decorated than mine.

I can afford to do 1 or 2 rooms a year therefore the rest are for shit most of the time.

my partner is too so i'm fighting a losing battle. I have a fridge magnet saying 'Make yourself at home...Clean my kitchen!'

midori1999 · 25/12/2010 02:21

I have that fridge magnet too! I also have a notice on my wall saying 'Although our house is quite a mess, come in, relax, converse. It doesn't always look like this, sometimes it's even worse'. My DH bought it for me, I have worn him down with my 'cosyness'. Grin

I do get a bit jealous of how immaculate a coupl eof my friend's houses arem even with two dogs each. They do have older DC though, my youngest is still putting sticky finger and hand prints all over! I was secretly pleased to notice one of my 'immaculate housed' friend's kitchen cupboard doors were a bit grubby the other day, That's awful, isn't it?

I remember visiting a stud farm (horses) once. The owner was a little eccentric and when we went into her kitchenb I couldn't believe it! Every single surface was covered with clutter, there was a huge dining table in the middle, all covered with saddlery and junk. Thick dust everywhere, I didn't judge her at all though, I just wished I could be as comfortable about mess as she was, must be so much less stressful not to care!

swanandduck · 26/12/2010 16:41

You must come and visit sometime Bunbaker. Grin.

Seriously, some people on this thread seem to think a tidy house means a house with a cream carpet, pictures and ornaments bought at the same time as the three piece sofa and nothing on display in the kitchen except the bottle of fairy liquid. So not true.

jonicomelately · 26/12/2010 16:56

I think my house is probably also a bit like swanandduck's. It's full of pictures and books and not a lick of cream paint anywhere. It's also quite clean and tidy.

I can't understand people who live in very untidy and dirty houses. I wouldn't be able to relax. why don't they just tidy up ffs. It isn@t rocket science.

I have no views on this but just came on to say that you are probably the first poster to accurately spell "weird." I think I love you.

lololizzy · 26/12/2010 23:23

A very houseproud friend once visited my old home and exclaimed in horror, 'you have things on every single surface' !! Umm...what else are surfaces used for??! Extra storage and all that, right??! Ok..i'm used to clutter, not good..but , she reckoned EVERY surface in her home was clutter free ?!!

Laquitar · 27/12/2010 11:13

In my opinion there is 'fresh clutter' (toys left there yesterday) and there is 'permanent clutter' (piles of shit been there for a year). The first one is fine, the second is not 'just mess'. It is filth. You cannot dust or hoover unless you move things around, if there is a pile of crap lying there since 1978 then will be dirt underneath and it is not 'cool', it is just filth.
