to feel pissed off that the parcel I lovingly slaved over has apparently been received but no one has even mentioned they've received it, not to mention said thank you

I kind of got it out in the title. Put a lot of effort into my mumsnet santa parcel. Spent quite a bit, and bought vouchers in case they didn't like what I'd chosen; bought wrapping paper, tags, little things for the childrens stockings, books, the stockings themselves, put gift receipts in for everything just in case they didn't like it. The whole thing. Struggled down to the post office with it (it was huge), stood in line for 20 mins to post it, got in late to work feeling quite smug. Tracked it on line, it was marked as delivered last weds.

And nothing.

Not a sausage.

I am not going to pretend to be a lovely altruistic person, I did want someone to say thank you, but what I really want is to just know it's with the right person and not some random person the parcelforce guy just found next door or whatever.

Why would someone not tell me that they'd recived it, even if, for whatever reason, they couldn't say thank you?

So I'm quite cross. And thinking I probably ABU as it was a gift and the joy of giving etc etc. But I would like to know all that effort had some kind of impact.

Hi all,

We have posted on the Thank you thread about this issue, we hope that everyone will post and say Thank you, but this isn't always the case and sometimes with very good reason.

OP I have PM'd you as I have just had an email from your SS Xmas Grin

DoNotWantAnotherMincePie it's rebecca @ mumsnet.com

RebeccaMumsnet · 22/12/2010 09:49

Morning all,

The OP's SS did receive her gift.

The parcels of books and games direct from MNHQ were over and above being matched with a MNetter hence why we wrote 'more to follow'. So if you have received a parcel direct from HQ and at least one other, then that is everything.

Cadbury also kindly offered a few hampers of chocolate that have been sent to MNetters that were not matched with fellow MNeters as nominations were late.

Everyone who was nominated and received (and responded to) a nomination email asking for their address was matched and will receive between 1 and 3 gifts.

I am sorry for all the confusion but please do contact me if you have any further issues.

Merry Christmas Xmas Grin

Hello. Just a couple of things to add to RebeccaMumsnet's post.

The MN Christmas Appeal is not really a Secret Santa.

Secret Santas work by everyone buying a gift for everyone else - so everyone gets one gift. In the MN Appeal, people are nominated by other MNers - either because they think they are in special need or because they think they deserve a treat/thank you. And other MNers offer to donate presents.

There are always more donors than nominees, so many nominees get more than one gift - sorted by a stunningly complex algorithm patented by the extraorindarily patient RebeccaMumsnet.

And the whole shebang operates on good faith, trust and a big dose of Christmas spirit.

Yes, some people don't say thank you. But in our experience, they are a tiny minority - and in most of those cases, something has happened in RL to prevent them posting. Last year, for example, someone's child was taken to hospital the week before Christmas and they were simply knocked too sideways by all of that to remember to post a thank you.

I have to say that, before I worked at MNHQ, I took part in the Appeal for a few years. And the very first year that I donated something, I got no thank you at all.

I was initially pretty miffed, like some of you, but then I figured that the Appeal is such a brilliant, wonderful outpouring of collective generosity that, if one or two parcels went to one or two people who perhaps weren't quite as deserving (in whatever respect) as others, then I could live with that.

We hope you can all live with that, too.
