In not going to work in this weather?

I'm supposed to go in tomorrow. I work two days per week in a shop in town, about a mile and a half away. The cars in my hamlet are snowed in. I don't fancy the walk, then on my feet all day, then the walk back in the dark, especially if the road is icy.

AIBU? I haven't worked there long. All the others live in the town so I feel I'm the only one letting the side down.

A mile and a half is nothing really. Your boss does not have to pay you so it is up to you. I would personally. I used to walk back from my kids school 3 miles away in the snow when buses not running and it was fine as long as you have good grips on your shoes. If it was an ambulance driver or doctor, I am sure you would expect them to go to work.

earwicga · 21/12/2010 17:37

bitsyandbetty - this is getting stupid now. The OP works in a shop. It isn't an essential role such as paramedic or doctor.

Is it really worth risking a broken leg to go work in a shop. You don't know the conditions of the 1.5 mile walk. On Friday the best thing to do is assess the risk and walk or not walk. It is irresponsible to get in the car and drive in conditions you aren't able to drive in, and the OP knows this. How do you all know she won't be hit by some irresponsible wanker who does get in their car? Or fall on thick ice and need medical care from an already stretched medical service.

You are all being unreasonable for going on and on at tearinghairout as if she had said she couldn't be bothered to stroll along a nice sunny road to work in an essential role. Get over yourselves!

scottishmummy · 21/12/2010 19:17

dearie me!
what if she hit by car?
falls on ice?
or a wee silver man abducts her

you explanations of why she shouldnt go in are laugh out loud funny

BelligerentYhoULE · 21/12/2010 19:25

DD was wondering today if an icicle could kill somebody if it fell on their head. Another potential danger there?

Animation · 21/12/2010 19:31

Yes, and there's some sharp shards of glass falling off trees. It's hazardous at every turn.

scottishmummy · 21/12/2010 19:47

op might slip on a discarded sweetie wrapper
this resultant fall will cause a a&e medic to divert to help her, making said medic late for work and unable to save the busload of kittens and nativity preschoolers about to skid on ice.arriving at holby in a parallel universe to op.maybe even same parallel universe you live in earwicga where danger lurks everywhere and no one should go to work just in case^

CapsizeQueen · 21/12/2010 19:51

It's not that far to walk really - you should make the effort - however, why don't you ask if you can leave early so there is still some light for the walk back? Offer to make the hours up some other time. Compromise...

CapsizeQueen · 21/12/2010 19:54

PS 3 miles only took me 45 mins today on pretty ice pavements - I was fine.

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:00

OP has agreed SIBU and has said she will walk

scottishmummy · 21/12/2010 20:00

and?

sm there are different levels of risk
falling on a sweetie wrapper = very low
slipping on compacted ice = much higher

You have to judge the level of risk you are comfortable with.
By your logic we should all be abseiling and white water rafting as we could get hit by a bus tomorrow

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:02

and people are still coming on to tell her she is being lazy and to walk. She gets that. She agrees, She will walk. Debate the issue but stop having a go at the OP!

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:03

(not aimed at you specifically, just you asked the question)

BelligerentYhoULE · 21/12/2010 20:03

Thank you - dd will be very interested to hear that! :)

scottishmummy · 21/12/2010 20:04

no i just dont advocate do nothing.stay in. just in case

rudimentary risk assessment should suffice rather than rambling what ifs

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:04

I actually tried stabbing myself with an icicle the other day.(yes..yes I know) It snapped. But I guess when it gets really cold the ice may be much more solid

CapsizeQueen · 21/12/2010 20:05

OK SPB sorry I must have missed the bit where she agreed that - my pc sometimes skips a page for some bizarre reason. I wasn't intentionally having a go at the OP.

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:05

Yes, I agree. But you countered someone suggesting the OP might slip on ice with a suggestion she might also slip on a sweet wrapper - diodn't make much sense to me

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:07

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 21/12/2010 20:07

SPB - you have waaaaaaay too much time on your hands (or you're a bit kinky Xmas Wink) if you're stabbing yourself with icicles for fun. Xmas Grin

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:08

sorry for incoherent post I am eating omellete

BelligerentYhoULE · 21/12/2010 20:09

You tried stabbing yourself with an icicle? Dare I ask why? :) Actually I can picture dd1 doing that too, just to see if it hurts!

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:09

Well I keep hearing on MN you can kill people with them so I at least thought I'd see how sharp it was and whether it'd draw any blood

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2010 20:09

erm..how old's your DD?
I fear I may have the maturity of a 10yo :o
