In not going to work in this weather?

I'm supposed to go in tomorrow. I work two days per week in a shop in town, about a mile and a half away. The cars in my hamlet are snowed in. I don't fancy the walk, then on my feet all day, then the walk back in the dark, especially if the road is icy.

AIBU? I haven't worked there long. All the others live in the town so I feel I'm the only one letting the side down.

If for argument's sake let's say you earn minimum wage and you'll be working for 8 hours, that's £47.44.

If someone said to you "You can avoid walking 1.5 miles in the snow if you pay me £47.44", would you say that sounded like a good deal or would you tell them to piss off and you'd rather save the money?

That used to be my acid test when I used to get an hourly rate and had my pay docked if I was ever late. "If I have an extra hour in bed, it will cost me £7...". Somehow it never seemed worth it.

DurhamDurham · 21/12/2010 00:16

You were never going to get a lot of support by claiming you just didn't fancy the walk.
If you can get in you should go or you are letting your work colleagues down. It could get a lot worse, we've got whole winter ahead of us, you might really get snowed in. Work will be a lot more sympathetic if you go in while you can.

earwicga · 21/12/2010 00:17

tearinghairout - It may have melted by Friday. I bloody well hope that some of it goes!!!

ilovesooty · 21/12/2010 00:27

You work part time and you seriously think it's too much effort to walk a mile and a half to work? YABU - there are plenty of people out of work who'd do it without whinging.

izzywizzywoowooo · 21/12/2010 00:33

YABU - It is a mile and a half which is nothing snow or now snow, Mind you if you usually drive there anyway you wouldn't walk it anyway would you?

I would walk, who knows, could be fun. Wink

cumbria81 · 21/12/2010 07:17

A mile and a half?!? and you usually DRIVE it?!

gingernutlover · 21/12/2010 07:28

its only a mile and a half - you will be fine, my dd and me do that distnace to the childminders when it snows.

Interestingly, the LEA I work for has informed us that they expect us to walk up to 5 miles if we can't drive to work as it is considered a short journey! I DO think they are unreasonable!

Animation · 21/12/2010 07:34

God it's cold, -13 in my car this morning. If you're walking - be careful you don't get frost bite.

chrimblycompo · 21/12/2010 07:35

Don't know what the point of this thread is
all the snow could be gone by Friday

You will probably shut the shop around 4 anyway because its Christmas Eve,unless you have to stay over to get the sale stuff ready.

I would walk it or at least try,if you get there late at least you have tried, good luck.

mangoandlime · 21/12/2010 08:50

I don't think it's particularly lazy to drive 1.5 miles, to work, in the Summer. I'd just want go get there, do my job and come home again! Plenty of time for nice leisurely walks at other times.

I would walk in the snow, for sure though - I hate to let people down, it is remembered when you make the effort.

I'll hold my hands up and say if I worked 1.5 miles away I'd drive, I get free parking so no faff - in fact it'd be loads more convenient to drive. I doubt I'm unique.

earwicga · 21/12/2010 15:29

I do a school run of 1.5 miles each way StewieGriffinsMom, even in summer. There are no paths here and tbh, I don't have the interest or time to walk 6 miles a day.

BelligerentYhoULE · 21/12/2010 15:32

YABVVVU - a mile and a half is nothing. And I do think it's lazy to drive a mile and a half on a normal day; sorry but I really do.

wonka · 21/12/2010 15:40

My 3 year old walked 2 miles to town and back yesterday in the snow.. If he can do it to be walked round the shops, you can do it to be paid!

tiredemma · 21/12/2010 15:43

I walked 4 miles to work last night- worked 12 hours night shift and then walked 4 miles home this morning. I wouldn't dream of not going in.

Many people will take a car as they are ging to do other stuff before or after, or simply to turn a 30-40 minute walk into a 5 min drive, thus saving them over an hour in the day.

It also depends on the type of journey it is.

15 miles to walk to work

This woman walked ten times that distance to work!

minipie · 21/12/2010 16:29

1.5 miles isn't far.

However it's just possible that the shop doesn't expect to be busy and actually would rather you didn't go so it can save on your wages for one day. Why don't you call them and ask?

If they do want you, though, you should go.
