Well my fridge freezer has randomly decided to warm up, even though the motor is working, IT JUST ISN'T GETTING COLD ARGH!

Is it cold enough (about -5) to say frozen outside overnight? I dont want to lose my whole crimbo shop !

ha ha - yes and very Ray Mears of you!

classydiva · 20/12/2010 18:08

Great idea!

backwardpossom · 20/12/2010 18:08

Not unreasonable - I've been known to keep milk and things outside in this weather. HOWEVER, do make sure that animals can't get at it...

coraltoes · 20/12/2010 18:08

fine as long as the foxes dont find it before you do!!

Pancakeflipper · 20/12/2010 18:09

We did it 3 weeks ago. Chucked the meat but the other frozen stuff was ok ( we stuck it in a crate full of snow then buried it in more snow) and my fridge stuff was fine. We'd step outside and get the milk and butter!

Poor you, it's bloody annoying - got a new one coming?

headfairy · 20/12/2010 18:10

my mum and dad always keep stuff outside if it's freezing. Saves on fridge space which is at a premium at this time of year. It is usually things like milk, drinks, fruit and veg rather than meat. Not sure I'd risk it with meat. But cheese, yoghurts etc are probably fine.

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 20/12/2010 18:10

watch out for the pumas though!

TattyDevine · 20/12/2010 18:10

Sure why not.

monkeyfacegrace · 20/12/2010 18:14

Argh it not fridge stuff Im worried about, I have a months worth of frozen sausages/chickens/pork etc that must stay frozen!

My DH is having a little too much fun making a little igloo around it though Hmm

monkeyfacegrace · 20/12/2010 18:14

Oh, and Im not scared of Pumas, I have guard pugs!

OP posts:
headfairy · 20/12/2010 18:16

hmmm tricky. Make sure the igloo isn't too well built because you'll need to go in and check quite regularly that they're frozen solid. That said, a drink I left in my car yesterday didn't defrost all day. And we're in the south so by no means the coldest place.

monkeyfacegrace · 20/12/2010 18:17

too well built?? TOO WELL BUILT??? My DH is an accountant, certainly not a builder. I think my toddler could have done a better job. But dont tell him, he is v.proud Xmas Wink

i am using my outside as my booze fridgem is greeat!

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 20/12/2010 18:21

If you have squirrels near you, you will need to put things in tins - they can get through a plastic crate in a very short time. They don't normally eat meat unless actually starving, though

headfairy · 20/12/2010 18:22

:o I want to see a photo of the igloo!

BendyBobCratchit · 20/12/2010 18:24

It's agreat ideaXmas Smile

One of the few upsides to freezing cold weather is that I acquire an extra fridge/freezer

coldtits · 20/12/2010 18:24

Just be aware that foxes will be very hungry this time of year, and have an excellent sense of smell

pawsnclaws · 20/12/2010 18:26

DH currently has his Christmas cans of Stella piled up in the back garden next to the back door. Not too worried about squirrels cracking them open, but it does make our house look a bit Shameless.

Lara2 · 20/12/2010 18:27

Used to do this at uni in the winter, kept the fridge stuff on the windowsill. :)

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:42

It would start to defrost I think, no?

How cold is a freezer?

QueenStromba · 20/12/2010 18:46

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who uses the back step as a beer fridge in this weather :)

As for the meat - it will keep a bit longer buried in the snow than it would in the fridge but I wouldn't advise putting it back in the freezer afterwards. Do you know any of your neighbours well enough to ask them if they can keep a couple of things in their freezer for a bit?

QueenStromba · 20/12/2010 18:48

panettoinydog: My freezer is -22

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:51

ah, would deforst then wouldn't it

princessparty · 20/12/2010 18:53

rats or foxes will get it won't they?
