don't people understand or care that small children sitting inert in pushchairs need to be wrapped up appropriately
i see so many everyday. little red hands. no snuggle. no hat. bare legs between sock and trouser leg. frozen rigid

even worse when person pushing is warmly wrapped

For Funky - if she does want to buy a footmuff thype thing: £12

DooinMeCleanin · 17/12/2010 14:20

I keep reading these judgy pants threads about children in buggies with bare legs in the freezing cold etc but I have never ever seen any such child in rl. All the children around here are either walking around looking like the Michelin Man or swaddled in a ridiculous amount of blankets.

I see gloveless or hatless children occassionally, I just presume they have pulled them off/refused them/lost them earlier that day.

I'm surprised at the number of cold children you all see. Where the hell do you all live? Confused

WilfShelf · 17/12/2010 14:22

YANBU, when they're little.

However past the age where I can wrestle them into things they can't take off, YABU. I could deck all the mothers who say about my 6 and 11 yos 'oooh, aren't they cold?'. Instead I just give them a withering smile and think 'dya think I hadn't spent FOUR FUCKING HOURS ARGUING WITH THEM TO PUT A COAT ON THIS MORNING THEN, you silly cow?'

After a certain age, a kid chooses with its feet. And hands. If I've reminded them, bought them the right clothing and they've taken them off, frankly it pisses me right off to be moralised at by other mothers.

Hulababy · 17/12/2010 14:24

I think it is about finding the balance.

I hate to see babies freezing cold, but equally hate to see babies and toddlers so bundled up in layers they look sweating and can hardly move.

Let's face it - it is even more dangerous to a little one t overheat than get cold.

Also, those using big padded snow suits and coats - please remove them before you put the child in a car seat in a car. The padding can stop a car seat harness from working and render the car seat safety useless.

Poledra · 17/12/2010 14:27

Last winter, DH came home quite upset about the child he'd seen in a buggy at the bus-stop. The mother was all wrapped up in coat scarf etc. The toddler was wearing thin trousers, and a light jacket. DH said the buggy was vibrating with the little boy's shivers, and he looked blue with cold.

Dh did offer his coat to cover the boy while they waited for the bus to arrive but the woman looked ta him like he was mad and said 'No, he's fine.' Sad Then she moved away from DH - obviously thought he was some kind of wierdo.

KERALA1 · 17/12/2010 14:27

Wilf I dont think anyone means older children. Its under twos inert in buggies. Honestly I hadnt seen it either until last week but when I did see that toddler (well older baby really) in a buggy minus a coat -not just a pulled off glove or hat - I was bloody shocked and yes I did judge the big fat mother in her furry coat.

CommanderDrool · 17/12/2010 14:37

I live in Glasgow. It's a big parky at thr moment.

funkingcart · 17/12/2010 14:38

I judged on Monday night.

Mother all dressed for the cold - big coat, hat, scarf, gloves - two wee twin boys by the hand beside her.

In open necked shirts and shorts, knee socks and shoes.

They were red nosed and looked freezing.

Wasn't just me though. DD2 said in a stage whisper "those boys look freezing mummy"

Xmas Grin
CommanderDrool · 17/12/2010 14:39

Or even 'bit' Grin

AbsofCroissant · 17/12/2010 14:45

I agree with Dooin I don't see this kind of thing going on (admittedly I don't actually see that many children and babies anyway, but that's by the by).

I did see a woman the other day walking around with bare legs and nearly fainted from shock.

YANBU for wanting to cry if you're seeing this all the time. I want to cry because I'm cold

KERALA1 · 17/12/2010 14:48

Actually am quite jealous of those on this thread with hardy older children who refuse coats. My 4 year old wont leave the house without wearing hat/gloves/scarf/extra socks. Many a walk has been abandoned because of incessant moaning relating to cold feet or even worse "wind in my hair". Arrgh.

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 17/12/2010 14:50

Literally lol at "wind in my hair" Xmas Grin

Sorry, KERALA [fwin]

fruitstick · 17/12/2010 14:57

I think I have hit children or ones that just like to annoy me.

Ds2 is 20 months and refuses hat, smuggler and gloves when I do school run. Screams blue murder and tries to tip himself out.

At the end of day, when I meet CM in playground, he is bundled up like a kipper looking most content.

People judge me, I can tell Grin.

jessiealbright · 17/12/2010 15:05

Jenai Well, she was really very nice- she wasn't judgmental, she was worried. And she complimented me on how cute my children were and their clothes and hats. Xmas Grin
I hope I see her in the centre again, actually, so that she can see that I'm wrapping up their necks now. Hate to think that my children's warmth could be preying on her mind.

I did think about whining on here for a moment, just so as I could join in, though...

TheSmallClanger · 17/12/2010 15:10

Tiny Clanger used to refuse gloves and hats. I gave up after she worked out how to throw a hat out of a moving car window, aged 3.

TheProvincialLady · 17/12/2010 15:20

I live in a very MC area. Most people are sensibly dressed but there are those who aren't. One woman took her 6? year old daughter to school when the temperature was -7 and a foot of snow on the ground, wearing ankle socks and no coat, cardigan not buttoned, no hat. But she was clearly mad as she herself was wearing stiletto heeled peep toed hideous shoe boot things and no socks. I couldn't bear to look, it was making me feel too cold.

Cosmosis · 17/12/2010 15:29

I think my ds just runs hot, so you'd probably judge if you saw me out and about. he's 14 weeks, and I have given up putting a hat on him as I kept overheating him.

beijingaling · 17/12/2010 15:47

At my brothers prep school all infants wore shorts all year round no matter what the weather was. I remember being so glad I was a girl.

YANBU OP.

Not looking forward to being shouted out by the locals for taking my newborn out of the house at all when she arrives though Sad

CommanderDrool · 17/12/2010 16:07

Mind you I have just returned from school pick up and saw quite a few university students who are going yo catch their death. Some of the girls from the Far East were wearing mini skirt, knee socks and tiny little jacket. It's -2!

princessparty · 17/12/2010 17:20

'Would children just sit there quietly if they were very cold?'

Yes they would ! The body goes sleepy and lethagic to conserve energy when very cold.

blackeyedsusan · 17/12/2010 18:47

ds is definately a hat and glove refuser.

he does wear...tights,socks,padded trousers, vest, tshirt, and a fleece under his snow suit. Sometimes I offer one hat to wear and one to wave, and if possible at least button his gloves to his sleepsuit so that he has the option to put them on. But it pains me enormously when he refuses.

I do hate seeing that aweful gap between trousers and dangling half off socks though.

ValiumShimmer · 17/12/2010 18:49

Wow. you think it's cruel to let a child sit in a pram without 7 layers on, you would rather 'overcome' them. That sounds kind of forceful

blackeyedsusan · 17/12/2010 19:05

red hair and not feeling the cold? You've got to be kidding, I must have missed that gene. I am the coldest person I know.

onestepforward · 17/12/2010 19:19

I would have been judged today... dd 2.5 turned into screaming banshee at the sight of the plastic rain cover on the buggy for the 5 min walk (from where I had abandoned the car in the snow) to my flat so I got her in, didn't pull it down and by the time we got home she was covered in snow and wailing. She did have a coat, scarf and hood but refuses gloves and will only wear a sunhat... that's 2 year olds for you eh.

ilovemyfestivehens · 17/12/2010 19:23

I used to put a sheepskin fleece inside ds2's cosytoes for him to sit on and a hot water bottle inside for when it was freezing.

If they pull their hats off then just put the hood up, they'll generally tolerate that when they won't accept a hat.
