Fuck off Aptamil...

...with you Facebook targeted adverts.

Since announcing my pregnancy on Facebook, I have been targeted by so many formula companies advertising 'baby clubs'. Aptamil are offering a free polar bear, and '1 to 1 advice'.... I wonder if this advice includes breastfeeding advice? No? Oh... no money in breastfeeding I suppose...

interestingly even though C&G failed to send me a cuddly cow I still tended to use their product. Go figure Wink

I am just grateful that when we got to 1 yr and DS took to food and cows milk we could ditch the formula. The expense is horrendous, I wish I had been able to bf

Hogfather you say you wish you had been able to... Can I ask why you couldn't? I am always curious about it when people say they couldn't?

MsFox · 16/12/2010 23:23

It's just constant bombardment (ime). It can't be good... subliminal messages and what not

On a slightly different note. The first targeted advert I got on Facebook the day I changed my status to "married" was for a divorce lawyer.

Made me giggle after months of adverts for wedding photography. I guess someone has to pay for Facebook being free...

MsFox · 16/12/2010 23:28

Like the garages that put their number on the pillars in multi story car parks Grin

I got both the cow and gate cow and aptimal polar bear. loads of vouchers too which you can pass on to others if not using them yourself.

QueeferSantaland · 16/12/2010 23:37

I like the cut of your gib, MrsFox.

I think they have very very particular advertising thingies.

After I got engaged I was subject to a barrage of ads for wedding photographers/venues in my area.

hogfather · 16/12/2010 23:38

MsKalo its a long story!! But I will try and condense it Smile

I took medication throughout my pregnancy for severe psoriasis (which was contraindicated but they made an exception for me) but my consultants told me it was an absolute no-no for me to bf but agreed for me to stop in order to bf as long as I didnt `rebound'

I came off it 2 weeks before my due date (because the medication should have meant he would be early) but ds was 2 weeks late so I was off it for 4 weeks by the time he arrived. He then did the best impression of a bf baby but didnt have a wet or dirty nappy for 4 days, the docs wanted to NG tube him, DH freaked and we ended up giving a bottle which DS took really well. Because my skin was breaking down rapidly we were advised continued to ff.

I posted on here at the time a fair bit cause I felt like a total failure - the whole bf/ff threads were like a rag to a bull! but I have chilled out since Grin

comedycentral · 17/12/2010 00:13

When I changed my facebook relationship status to engaged I was bombarded with all sorts of relevant adverts. They just bombard you!

klauskinskiinthekinotech · 17/12/2010 00:23

I notice Ed Miliband uses it (it does nothing for his complexion) Xmas Grin

ShoppingDays · 17/12/2010 01:06

YABU. Most adverts are for things some people don't want or need. If you're not interested just ignore them like you would any other advert.

MsKalo · 17/12/2010 07:39

hogfather you should never have felt like a failure! You did what you could do bf but genuinely had problems! I admit I am a bit of a bf zealot and think people should bf if they can - and the emphasis is on the word can! You had real problems and did so much to try so good on you! I am sorry to hear you has such a hard time and I hope you don't feel bad now as you have nothing to feel bad for as you really tried x

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 17/12/2010 07:52

I got the cute polar bear and I bf all 3 of mine Grin just wanted the free toy!

NinkyNonker · 17/12/2010 07:53

Oh I had this, still get the crap through the post now. Our recycling bag gets full pretty quickly.

I think they track what you look at on the internet, I used to get banners down the side of Hotmail, FB etc.

It isn't about announcing it, it is also the related searches. Should I stop using my PC to look for things I am interested in? Cynical and against all the health messages you are given inpregnancy. (And yes, I used to work in marketing so I know advertising is cynical but in this context it really bugs me.)

MsFox · 17/12/2010 08:14

It's not just the fact that they target individuals, it's also the fact that they are advertising when it's against the law. Ok, so they've got around that by advertising a 'baby club', in which they send you your own little advertising soft toy...just grates on me. Bf is best for your baby, everyone knows that, and although it's every womans right to choose how she feeds her baby, and in some cases there is no choice, I think it's crosses the line to have so many formula companies dominating advertising space whilst your expecting. Internet, post, bounty packs etc etc. Like I siad, it must work, else they wouldn't do it.

OP posts:
MsFox · 17/12/2010 08:30

and no, I will not accept it altinkum.

MsKalo · 17/12/2010 08:46

Stamping my foot with ya! And you are right - they should not be allowed to advertise the way they do

bb99 · 17/12/2010 10:04

Is this legal? I thought it was illegal in this country to advertise formula milk aimed at under 6 months, hence follow on milk advertising re-emerging.

Plus the polar bear thing is illegal too isn't it - thought they weren't allowed to use images n their tins/in adverts that were 'appealing' to babies/children/parents etc...

You could complain to the advertising standards agency if you're really pissed about it...

jaggythistle · 17/12/2010 10:25

Once your DC hits 10/11 months you will start getting all the mail about the wonders of 'Toddler Milk' and how you should panic now about their iron intake.

I should probably just tell them I am making gmy own toddler milk with my boobs, thanks.
