to play my DD (11 weeks) metal music when she enjoys it

BextheBambi · 16/12/2010 22:38

I'm very selective in what I play her making sure there are little to no curse words or inaudible ones.

I mean she giggles at Slipknot- Duality,
smiles all the way through Rammenstien.

She seems to be really enjoying it, however DM says i should be playing her classical music to boost her brain waves, even though there is no scientific evidence that this actually works.

Don't get me wrong I play her some happy kiddy songs too like Send me on my way- from Matilda.

Anyone else play alternative music to their LO's and have you noticed any disturbing behaviour if so?

I suspect your DH just has better taste in music than you Grin just make sure you aren't playing your music too loud.

Actually thinking about it I have a friend with a 12 year old boy who I am always telling how absurdly lovely he is. He's been exposed to his dad's bleuch metal obsession all his life.. SO maybe it is a good thing :)

Doesn't seem to be any good for mice or plants though!

BextheBambi · 17/12/2010 12:20

I may invest in some rockabye baby albums :) sounds like fun for me and DD.

Ds2 (6) recently had to go to school dressed as a 1950s schoolboy for a 1950s day. He didn't want to do it until we told him he was going in fancy dress as Angus Young Smile.

AngelZigzagsSparklyYuletideLog · 17/12/2010 12:24

I love that summary of the research evildead Grin

Especially the mice who were subjected to 24 hours of Anthrax, a band I've liked in the past but not to the extent of listening to it for 24 hours! 'but instead of completing Merrill?s maze, the heavy metal mice all killed one another.' Shock

And that the plants listening to Led Zep grew 'in an unhealthy way' I did LOL Grin

There is a downside to playing your dd metal

Dd now 7 has started learning the drums and even her school teacher has commented on her music taSTES

BextheBambi · 17/12/2010 12:31

DD really, really, really adores Freddie Mercury and refuses to accept that he is dead. She's been shown evidence on t'internet but reckons it's a hoax.
when she was born, I was going through a phase of revisiting my youth so she is well aquainted with Kid Creole and his Coconuts as well as AC/DC and Iron Maiden.
Since moving to Belgium, she has been introduced to Justin flicky my hair Bieber and is going to be disappointed on Xmas morning. She isn't getting his CD.

AngelZigzagsSparklyYuletideLog · 17/12/2010 12:38

I'm with your DD and still can't believe Freddies dead Shock

Sympathies to you kreecher on the Bieber front, keep repeating 'It's just a phase. It's just a phase...'

goingroundthebend4 · 17/12/2010 12:40

lolo Kreecher dd hates Bieber greets anything played with a look and a hmm you think thats musc i you have a serious tatse problem

Adair · 17/12/2010 12:45

Course not.

Of course, as others have said they will rebel and listen to teeny pop (but then they'll prob do that anyway).

My dd is 4, am about to make her a compilation CD for her Christmas pressie of a CD player of various from Kristeen Young, Sleater-Kinney, Low, Paloma Faith, Muse, Junior Senior... Obviously, that's what I like! But she is quite particular and she doesn't like my favourite band ever (Mates of State) Sad. Hoping she'll change...

slug · 17/12/2010 12:46

Dd has, since she was very little, demanded Daddy put on banging industrial techno. We have managed to convert several of her friends to it as well Wink Grin

LaWeaselMys · 17/12/2010 12:46

Screw classic music! Dancing in the kitchen with 20mo DD to radio one while cooking is totally awesome. She is developing a taste for club music. Hmm and started cheering for 'like aG6' yesterday.

I need a better radio station.

I used to argue with my mum about this too though. Even when I showed her the research that proves it us just music - not classical music that stimulates your brain, and only for 15mins immediately after.

AngelZigzagsSparklyYuletideLog · 17/12/2010 12:47

You can't just leave it at that goinground, you are obliged to pass on the secret to your dd disapproving of bieber...

goingroundthebend4 · 17/12/2010 14:20

Secret of dd not liking him is having 2 teen brothers that rip the mic out of him the floopy hair the voice

but thankfully she had my taste in music.Hides the drumsticks

booyhohoho · 17/12/2010 14:22

ds1 used to fall over to sleep with metallica and ONLY metallica at that age.

CMOTdibbler · 17/12/2010 14:29

DS loves AC/DC and is great at singing Thunderstruck. Before he was born, he liked early GnR and would kick along

ILovePonyo · 17/12/2010 14:33

mimile thank you for mentioning the Pixies for babies - have just found it on Amazon and can't believe it! Fantastic! I love the Pixies and had no idea such a thing existed. Will be ordering asap Grin

Porcelain · 17/12/2010 14:34

When DS frets in the car I put on Sweet Soul Sister by The Cult and he calms down straight away.

ILovePonyo · 17/12/2010 14:34

Oh my god, they have Smashing Pumpkins aswell, think I could get carried away here...

IWantToBeAFairyWhenIGrowUp · 17/12/2010 14:38

YANBU - DD was listening to the Scissor Sisters when I was pg and I could feel her bouncing around, she still likes them now.

Although her favourites now are Steps Xmas Grin.

Variety is the spice of life as they say.

superv1xen · 17/12/2010 14:38

my DC aged 1 and 4 have been brought up on a diet of rock music as me and DP are massive rock fans. is iron maiden, guns n roses, led zeppelin, metallica, and that ilk etc and it hasnt done them any harm yet :o

superv1xen · 17/12/2010 14:38

is was meant to be ie

BaronessBomburst · 17/12/2010 14:42

My DS loves heavy metal! He wriggles up to the speaker (still not crawling yet) and lies with his nose pressed against it 'sky-diving' like a maniac and going 'yaah, yaah, yaah'. Just keep the volume down these days. Sad

ILovePonyo · 17/12/2010 14:56

Also, my dp is really looking forward to "educating" our little one (when she arrives) with the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zep etc.

I have warned him that when she gets older she may well hate that kind of music and love cheesy pop etc. He looked gutted. As if the thought had never occured to him Hmm

MyPrettyFloralBonnet · 17/12/2010 15:37

Ds loves the new Iron Maiden album, it calms him in the car and until recently went to sleep to it. Dp delighted. Unfortunately I'm not a fan, I prefer NIN, Rammstein and Fear Factory, but I get the feeling I'm stuck with it for the forseeable future. Don't think I want him singing NIN songs like my brother sang "Suicide Is Painless" as a small child.

My mum did panic when we said what ds goes to sleep to, she was convinced we were playing it full belt.
