I am absolutely SICK AND TIRED of reading about Muslims this, Islam that.

I am SICK of reading from ignorant morons on Facebook "Send Muslims home".

AIBU to think that this is ridiculous, where would we send "Muslims" home too? Islam isn't a race/nationality it's a religion...

What on earth is with the hatred? Afghanistan haven't threatened Britain-and most people think that the Army is there to "protect" Britain...

AIBU to think that this is just a small percentage of ill educated, red top reading, morons?

Classydiva? You might like to rethink your nickname in the light of your last post.
Hmm

We live in a rural, predominantly white, community. Last year our teacher went on maternity leave and her replacement was a lovely girl who was French/Egyptian. She taught the children Arabic and French phrases and really enthused them about other cultures and religions.
99% of the parents were thrilled with her, but one particular mother (supposedly intelligent, previously had a very high flying career in the city) actually took her DS out of the school (there were other micromanagement issues on her part but this was the "final straw" for her) because she didn't want her little darling getting a "Muslim accent from being around that woman".
I severed all contact with her after that as I really didn't want my DS being tainted by the neurotic bitch and her insanity....

OP that facebook update is shocking. (Perhaps hide their posts/remove friend?)

Im really worried that increased seggregation through religious schools is going to make things worse. Didnt seem to help things in northern ireland.

YANBU. As a teen in the 90s i noticed general racist attitudes against blacks + asians, but it was only after 9/11 that the racism has focused on muslims more.

I've heard otherwise nice, normal and (i assumed) intelligent people saying some nasty stuff (inc some of my family and old friends :( ).
They live in towns + villages where they rarely socialise with anyone 'foreign' or muslim, and believe every word of the press. But i am NOT trying to excuse their attitudes.

I could give so many examples of racism that i've heard but it would upset posters here :(.
I do challenge people but it gets a bit much when it's almost everyone white that i know.
Growing up i saw the effect racial abuse had on my mixed-race sister - even from her (white) nan.

I wish people could tolerate and accept each others' differences but sadly racism and religious hatred will always exist.

begonyabampot · 16/12/2010 09:22

LaraJade - like you i grew up in small town with very little immigrant population (apart from us dirty Irish catholics but we were able to get away with it as we sort of looked the same apart from the horns). When I go home I really have to Confused at some of the comments regarding immigrants/muslims etc and they still hardly have any compared to where I live now which does have a big immigration population and is pretty multicultural. I very rarely hear much immigrant /muslim/paki talk here but when I go home it's all pop to the Pakis for some milk, fancy a chinky tonight - and these folk aren't even racist.

chakalala · 16/12/2010 09:45

the media is to blame for all this sometimes, news is so generalised leading to stereotypes.

IntergalacticHussy · 16/12/2010 09:59

i think the problem is that, for whatever reason, Muslims who want to blow us up or overthrow the British government, replacing it with Sharia law (i've actually met a few of the latter outside a shopping centre in Walthamstow where we used to live, they used to hand out flyers, probably still do) are much more vocal than those who don't.

The muslim council of great britain, far from being the liberal, tolerant voice of Islam, seems to actually represent many extremist voices in the UK. I think truly liberal muslims need to find their own platform to redress the balance. I don't know how easy that would be, but surely the internet could be utilised somehow?

i suppose its all part of the culture of fear which keeps us apart from one another, spending to fill the void like good little consumers (Michael Moore writes quite well on the subject i seem to remember although i know he doesnt have many fans on MN!) Sad

I have quite a few questions regarding muslim's opinions /views on life in general and how they want their religion practiced - would be really interesting to be able to discuss the whole situation frankly without worrying about causing offense. Lots of questions, but no form to really get answers - generally I don't want to offend or risk getting into an argument with the few muslims I know.

VladimirsPukin · 16/12/2010 10:24

The Saudis also wanted the Americans to bomb Iran

begonyabampot · 16/12/2010 10:33

What is classed as a liberal/ tolerant muslim? Do more strict practicing muslims judge those who who don't follow islam to their standard as lesser muslims or not really muslim at all? Are many 'muslims' who are muslims because they are born into the religion but don't follow the stricter rules still considered muslim - wonder if they still consider themselves muslim? Would be interested to hear some muslims share their views.

Yes Riven the fact is the media is selective in what it publishes because of its known bias towards any news that sparks controverys and of course causes a stir..
Let me just remind everybody of a couple of things
1- cvilian muslims women and children, etc. are being blown up too everyday in Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan etc and even on 9/11 or 7/7 we mustn't forget muslims weren't spared. So the terrorism is mostly carried out to suit al element of extermist thought but by many who choose to generalise is attributed t the whole muslim nation.
for names of the victims of 7/7 and to see proff of how that disaster affected everybody not just non muksims check this out news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/uk/05/london_blasts/victims

2- humans in general love to accuse the other of much of the bad in the world when the going is bad and this is one of those cases where irnically many of the accusations thrown at muslims ca be very easily thrown back at other cultures because it is a HUMAN problme.

3- I am a practising and proud muslim and hey I am also very open minded and tolerant and I know hundreds of British Muslims who do great things for this country. However,I can see where the extreme right wing fractions in British society get their "high" from. Many other muslims and even non muslims don't always like to hear what i have to say about too many asylum seekers having been allowed into this country ( not the immigrants fault and of course I am not supporting a blanket ban) and that many of them do not contribute to British society and hence this give ammunition to people seeking to outcast a faith or race etc.
I am sure there is more to be said on this sad matter!

FindingAManger · 16/12/2010 10:44

YANBU - however I don't see any of this stuff on Facebook at all so you must be getting exposed to this via your "friends". Delete anyone who spouts such rubbish immediately (preferably after pointing out why you are doing so) & check your privacy settings. You can fairly easily control the crap on FB.

gypsymummy · 16/12/2010 10:45

sorry about my endless typos ..idid not go over that!

VladimirsPukin · 16/12/2010 10:45

What is the real Islam?
The soft western version or the Harsh Islamic state version?
I have seen comments in chatrooms by Muslims living in Pakistan who hate Muslims living in soft western countrys
Islam is a religion of peace as long as you dont critisise it
Islam is tolerant to women as long as they obey its laws. There was a big outcry saying women have a right to wear the Hijab, what about the rights of women not to wear it?
What about the rights of young girls not to be used as sex objects by Muslims. I am talking about the practise of rich men from hard line Muslim countrys going to more liberal countrys and marrying young girls for a few months and then divorcing them after they have had there way with them.
They do this because sex outside marrage is a sin so this is an easy way round it
( I didnt read about this in the racist red tops but online in newspapers from the Middle East )
