To find the thought of Camilla being poked with a stick mildly amusing

I know I'm being childish but the thought of it just tickles me somehow.

I don't find the situation that funny, but like many of you, I find the way it was reported slightly amusing. 'Poked with a stick' did make me snigger a bit.

Rosebud05 · 12/12/2010 23:07

Angel, this -

www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/dec/12/police-injured-protester-hospital

A 20 year old student was hit over the head with a police baton, taken to C & W hospital, where treatment was initially refused as the police had an agreement with C & W hospital that only police would be treated there. Paramedic pressed urgency of situation, man eventually admitted, required 3 hours of brain surgery and will be in hospital for 'some time'.

CrackFox, I don't think 63 is old but it's the inherent nastiness of a mob of young, fit people menacing a couple of older people, I guess.

And I guess it depends on your frame of reference we both thought of our mums mine is 63 as well but quite frail and physically tends to feel quite vulnerable. I guess that's why I see that possibility. Not implying that all women in their sixties are doddering old dears.

Sorry, link hasn't worked.

Cut and paste then Google it.

NorthernLurker · 12/12/2010 23:07

Goblinchild - the dh in question was her first husband. He had some sort of job - no idea what.

I don't find it amusing at all tbh - she was clarly very frightened. Had any 'ordinary' woman been ambushed by a mob in this way nobody would even be trying to suggest it was justifiable or funny. Why does Camilla get any less protection in that regard?

Beveridge · 12/12/2010 23:08

Surely not - never been in a riot myself but I certainly wouldn't have been opening windows!

I suppose things like that that happen though if you never have to make any decisions about your own personal safety.

What were they opening the windows for? To shout at the oiks?!

blushington · 12/12/2010 23:09

I think they were initially trying not to overreact, and hoped the protesters were just protesting at tuition fees (which C&C obviously aren't responsible for) and didn't have any beef with them. Then it went nasty very quickly.

neverchuckaniphoneatgordo · 12/12/2010 23:09

I have never been a fan of either but they were scared shitless a baying mob of loons would frighten anyone, and I did feel sorry for them. Do you think Marie Antoinette tried to reason with the mob in the same way?

Rosebud05 · 12/12/2010 23:10

Camilla et al get £50 million worth of protection each year. I guess the amusing part may be that no-one suggested that they didn't drive through a angry protest obviously dripping with wealth.

Beveridge · 12/12/2010 23:10

Nobody is saying Camilla shouldn't get the same protection as anybody else, but I don't see why it needs to be reported repeatedly - it certainly wouldn't be if it was an 'ordinary' woman involved.

EduStudent · 12/12/2010 23:10

It does seem sad that Alfie Meadows (the 20-year old left with brain injuries) was mentioned after both Camilla and the Pink Floyd bloke's son. Seems fame comes before life-threatening injuries.

nightmarebeforechristmas · 12/12/2010 23:12

yabu

Glitterknickaz · 12/12/2010 23:15

Whilst I think this is a very serious incident and do wonder quite what would have happened had it been a gun or a knife I do find the phrase "poked with a stick" amusing.

It's a bit pythonesque.

I do wonder what the frig her protection officers were doing 1) driving through the protest in the first place and 2) allowing the attack to take place though.

TheCrackFox · 12/12/2010 23:19

was it a sharp stick?

PaxoIsEvil · 12/12/2010 23:19

That's exactly it Glitterknickaz! It is python-esque. It also doesn't sound particularly scary or threatening.

neverchuckaniphoneatgordo · 12/12/2010 23:22

I thought poking with sharp pointy sticks only happened on MN Xmas Confused

bladderack · 12/12/2010 23:23

You're right Glittaknickaz.

You're a violent anti-establishment desparado, you have the future Queen of England at your mercy and what do you do? 'Poke her with a stick'

It's pure python.

I just picture John Cleese as the newsreader.

bupcakesandcunting · 12/12/2010 23:25

She's alright Camilla is. I much prefer her to mopey old Di. I don't even think the stick thing happened. I mean, come on. Think about it. Sensationalist twaddle. She got some middle-class Oscar shouting "off with their heads" and a vandalised car. No poking happened.

MummieHunnie · 12/12/2010 23:26

I found the odd commnet there was contact strange, and the poked with a stick comment strange/funny, not the fact she was hit if that makes sense! I remember seeing some pictures of the windows down slightly, so I imagine the stick went through the gap at the top, you would think it was too cold for windows being down and once in that mob, you would surely put the windows up!

Now it makes sense why she was on the floor!

The pink floyd blokes son/adopted son/step son, which is he to pink floyd bloke, as they seem to continually change their minds regarding the relationship?

KalokiMallow · 12/12/2010 23:26

I did giggle quite a bit.

Not at the thought of anyone trying to hurt her obviously, but the wording.

Poked with a stick just sounds so very funny when in a serious news article.

So YANBU.

It could only have been more amusing if she'd been slapped with a wet fish.

AngelZigzagsSparklyYuletideLog · 12/12/2010 23:27

From what I can gather, and I'm probably making up the bits I don't know, they were on their way to their engagement, and because the protesters were trying to avoid kettling they were in localised groups rather than one big one.

They were caught out by a group that was moving about, so the only option was to keep going.

I'm sure they didn't think 'ach, we'll be OK if we drive straight through the middle of this huge rioting crowd'.

MummieHunnie · 12/12/2010 23:27

apologies for typo's

KalokiMallow · 12/12/2010 23:28

Gah, meant to write "if they said she'd been"
