To not actually know what mulled wine is?

hankythechristmaspoo · 09/12/2010 14:47

And to hope than in response to this thread, someone will tell me?

I am 32 btw and until now i've never really taken much notice of it, but now every 5 mins I hear about mulled wine and feel quite stupid. Please put me out of my misery.

If someone tells me what it is, I may even buy some. I googled and found recipes - do I actually have to MAKE it?

It is red wine with spices and oranges in it, it is served warm and is delicious.

TinselinaBumSquash · 09/12/2010 14:49

You can buy it in bottles in the wine aisle or make it.

ShatnersBassoon · 09/12/2010 14:49

You can buy it pre-mulled. If you've Googled the recipe for it, you'll already have an idea of what it is.

pommedeterre · 09/12/2010 14:49

I have no idea either. people talk about it and I have been to Xmas parties but I've never had it, never been offered it or never seen anyone else drinking it.
The word clove will be involved I wager.

faverolles · 09/12/2010 14:50

You can buy it, but it's never the same!
It's basically hot wine with oranges/lemons, sugar, cloves, cinnamon and allsorts of things in! (I've probably missed stuff out there, but you get the picture)
It's lovely Xmas Smile

Deliaskis · 09/12/2010 14:50

YABVVVU, and if you don't know already, then sorry, but it's too late for you Xmas Wink.

But as I'm feeling generous, it is red wine, mixed with fruit juice and heated with 'wintery' spices (e.g. cinammon etc.) that people either add individually, or use a teabag type of thing, to make it, and served hot.

Or you can just buy it in bottles and heat it up.

Is yum, like an alcofrolic hot beeny.

Deliaskis · 09/12/2010 14:51

Oooh yeah, sugar forgot that, and it would be a bit rank without it.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 09/12/2010 14:52

It is absolutely lovely Smile

Rather than faff about with spices (and now someone is going to tell me it's no faff at all Grin) buy one of those ready made mulled wine mixes, chuck it in some warmed red wine and add some sliced oranges. Or buy some ready made mulled wine (M&S do a very nice one), heat and serve with oranges.

Either way, it's very yummy (she says in her best Katie-from-I-Can-Cook voice)

5DollarShake · 09/12/2010 14:52

All mulled wines are not created equal and the word clove is indeed involved.

I've never really been able to enjoy it properly since DH redecorated the bathroom with it after a particularly raucous afternoon soiree round at ours one year. Blast his eyes.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/12/2010 14:56

I know what mulled wine is.

OTOH I have no idea what an "alcofrolic hot beeny" is.

If you CBA to make it, sainsburys is selling ready-made for about £3.99 which is surprisingly nice and quite boozy.

To make it you put red wine, some orange juice, cinnamon, sugar, few cloves in a pan and heat it up gently for a while - 15 minutes or so. You should then add extra alcohol (rum or vodka or brandy) because a lot of the alcohol cooks off) and serve it. It's supposed to be hot, sweet, winey, alcoholic and delicious.

hankythechristmaspoo · 09/12/2010 15:01

Hot wine? Really?

See I did google but didn't actually look at the links as they all involved the word 'recipe'

Don't know if I can be arsed to be honest. Is it really worth it?

Although, I do have some cloves in the cupboard which I bought accidently so it could be a use for them.

Hmmmm I do in fact have all the stuff, although the orange is a bit manky!

Elephants, hot beeny = hot ribena, alcofrolic = alcholic!

Sorry, I do realise that was in Delialect.

Wordsonascreen · 09/12/2010 15:07

Its disgusting and a waste of good alcohol.

SheWillBeLoved · 09/12/2010 15:09

Am I the only person who finds it absolutely revolting? Warm, sickly wine, that tastes like I have made a cuppa using an Airwick Plug In - the fact that they even have a 'Mulled Wine' scent backs me up. [vom]

SheWillBeLoved · 09/12/2010 15:09

x post - guess not Xmas Grin

RitaLynn · 09/12/2010 15:09

YABU!

Saltire · 09/12/2010 15:14

I agree with wordsonascreen - it is vile. However I don't like red wine, so that probably blinkers my view of it as a drink

DH on the other hand loves it and bought 6 bottles of red wine on Saturday in Aldi soley for making mulled wine. he has got the page in my Hairy Bikers Christmas bok marked all ready for his mulled wine making session

omnomnomtom · 09/12/2010 15:16

Any Christmas markets near you? You can almost always have mulled wine at them. If you are doing it at home add loads of brandy and buy some of those german gingerbread biscuits (lebkuchen) to serve with it mmmmmm
Am drooling at the thought but will have to make do with mulled apple juice this year as am pregnant
Happy mulling!

Saltire · 09/12/2010 15:17

I saw a christmas cookery show last night (could have been Nigella actually) and it had mulled cider on - now I like the sound of that, and am willing to try it out.

diddl · 09/12/2010 15:20

A bit like warm sangria, then?Grin

NinkyNonker · 09/12/2010 15:25

Hmmmmmmm, mulled wine.

SkiingGardeningTwinklyBauble · 09/12/2010 15:27

Done right it's fantastic.

I think you have a duty to try lots of it and tell us which you like best, if you can still speak at that point.

diddl · 09/12/2010 15:39

Anyone know of an alcohol free one that´s any good?

MaDugHerDecsOut · 09/12/2010 15:40

I love mulled wine, I have it every christmas :)

hankythechristmaspoo · 09/12/2010 15:54

Ok skiing, I shall try shop bought, home made and the packet thing, then bo a MN mulled wine review. Can't guarantee anyone will be able to understand it tho!
