It's been done before, but I couldn't bring myself to read the threads as they would have made me cry - with longing!

I'm on the breadline, literally, and am a good budget cook. Lentils, five meals from a chicken, etc. BUT!! Today I spent some of my cold weather money on a joint of sirloin. I roasted it very fast, very hot. Brown on the outside & BLOODY on the inside. God, it's gorgeous!

Just eaten about half a pound of the stuff, and feel healthier than I have in months!

Fellow lovers of dead creatures, share your lascivious recipes here Xmas Wink I'm ready to read and slaver.

Red British veal is raised in a (slightly) more humane way than white Continental veal. If you do have any concerns about the ethics of it that is...

I'm a meat eater but draw the line at eating endangered species (shark, whale etc). I'm at a loss to understand why making oh-so-hilarious-desensitised jokes about eating them warrant a Grin.

Asteria · 08/12/2010 10:27

I was only joking about the endangered species - it was a line from a comedy show I saw a few months ago. Sorry , clearly bad taste on my part. No intention to offend.

vintage1963 · 08/12/2010 10:29

well thats great if ypu want to eat dead animals i choose not too thank god!

NerdyFace · 08/12/2010 10:30

I always liked a sticker I saw on a car in america which read something along the lines of

"Dear Vegetarians, for every animal you don't eat, i'm going to eat 2"

Morloth · 08/12/2010 10:31

I like it on these threads when someone points out that meat is a dead animal, like no-one realised that.

It has to be dead, eating live ones would be very difficult.

SlobbyBOB · 08/12/2010 10:33

"well thats great if ypu want to eat dead animals i choose not too thank god!"

I'm shocked, you mean you can't even wait.

Ariesgirl · 08/12/2010 10:35

Asteria - too little sleep on my part I think Blush

Still don't get why anyone would eat whale or shark though...

NerdyFace · 08/12/2010 10:35

You always work up more of a Hunger when they are alive!!

Have you ever tried to not only BRING DOWN, but then eat a Lion?!..Thats hard work!

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/12/2010 10:36

I am an unrepentant carnivore and eat blue steak, and my stepson is a strict vegan.

Going out for dinner as a family is amusing.

Mind you, I don't eat meat every day. And I try to buy it from a butcher.

vintage1963 · 08/12/2010 10:36

i just feel pity for you, i really do

ShatnersBassoon · 08/12/2010 10:39

Why pity, vintage1963?

NerdyFace · 08/12/2010 10:40

AriesGirl

I was staying in Japan with a "Foster Family" I suppose you could call them, and one night they made mention to have a special dinner for me!

It was seafood and I am a HUGE fan of seafood!

Was only afterwards I was informed the large slabs of meat in the soup were Whale (no idea what kind..Most likely Sperm Whale) and the Sushi was Mako Shark caught that day by some fisherman in the port.

I have to say, they were delicious, had I KNOWN what they were, I may not of eaten them, but I ate them in tasty bliss!

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/12/2010 10:43

Lol at vegetarian + sausage eaters celebrity death match.

LOVING the passive aggressive pity.

Morloth · 08/12/2010 10:43

Isn't it a bad idea to eat other carnivores? Why do I think that? I think I read something somewhere.

I like lamb shoulder the best, cooked really low for hours and hours, so soft.

My butcher has this tenderising machine thingy where he can set it to really really thick so he ran some New York steaks through it for me the other day. Is there anything finer than a nice big steak a fresh salad and a nice glass of something big and red?

It was a good cow, I was very happy to have met it.

nickytwotimes · 08/12/2010 10:44

i'm veggie and have no issue with people eating meat.

i am also well aware that in eating dairy i am contributing to animal death and would bbe fooling myslf to think otherwise.

the only thing that bugs me is peoplle who don't eat meat that looks like the animal eg whole chicken. wise up!

Morloth · 08/12/2010 10:46

Personally I think if you couldn't kill it yourself (I mean bring yourself to do it, not skill) then you have no business eating meat. Taking a life to maintain your own is serious business and people should be aware that something died for them.

FindingAManger · 08/12/2010 10:46

I eat "veggie" or "vegan" (if it's necessary to label it as such) about 4-5 days a week. Not because of budget necessarily, just because that is how I like to eat, though I am in no way at all a veggie or vegan.

But still I just love love love a good really rare steak, or a couple of juicy fat pink lamb chops from time to time. I think I enjoy them all the more for eating them rarely. I'd rather splash out on a really good steak/chop occasionally, than eat cheap meat more regularly (as DP would choose to do).

nickytwotimes · 08/12/2010 10:51

indeed morloth

Asteria · 08/12/2010 10:51

I am doing the Blood Group diet thingie. I'm a type O which is the Hunter/meat eater type. I spent years on faddy diets and starving myself, I now feel amazing and eat as much as I want (within reason) - and meat is a huge part of that. I say listen to your body - if you feel like crap eating meat then chances are it's not for you. Use a good local butcher - mine can actually tell me which farm his meat has come from - and if you are lucky enough to have the land, grow your own!

Asteria · 08/12/2010 10:54

Morloth I have also killed my own food. My DS was taught at an early age (about 5) how to pluck feathers from game birds and he is also a dab hand at skinning and gutting a rabbit.

UnquietDad · 08/12/2010 10:57

I don't think anyone needs to apologise for being a carnivore/ an omnivore. I leave veggies to get on with their own thing, and am quite happy if they leave me to get on with mine.

As for game birds, I'm always up for those.

radiohelen · 08/12/2010 10:58

I saw a recipe on This Morning years ago for lamb and it's been a staple in our kitchen ever since. You get a hunk of cheap lamb (shoulder/breast?). Chop lots of onions, tomatos, lemons, potatos and garlic into a roasting pan. Sit the meat in there along with oregano and seasoning. Cover it with tin foil, stick it in the oven on low and forget about it all day.... DIVINE DAAAAALINK!
I have a big chunk of loin of pork in the fridge that is going to get a roasting this afternoon.... it was for a family do that didn't happen cos of the weather... we get to eat it all, with apple sauce and stuffing. Nom nom nom...

Asteria · 08/12/2010 11:01

UnquietDad Grin not much meat on those birds!

FindingAManger · 08/12/2010 11:05

GMajor veal produced in the UK now is called rose veal - production methods have changed considerably in the UK, thought they still produce white veal on the continent. The crates have gone - it's more humane.

Yes you're still eating a baby animal, but I don't see the difference between eating a young animal & an older one - you're still eating an animal.

Morloth · 08/12/2010 11:05

The PETA ad with Pamela Anderson marked up as a piece of meat made me laugh, like anyone would want to (or could, is she actually meat at this point or totally synthetic?) eat Pamela Anderson.

I can't imagine there are too many animals around with the same parts as her
